I like anime more. To me it's more entertaining to watch with the openings, endings, colours, voice actors etc. The one think i don't like is that they don't always stick to the manga. :P

Depends really.

High concept, action, style over substance, or uses sound and music as a focal point is better in anime

Slice of life, romance, slow moving, and character pieces are better in manga.

Exactly what Jigero said.

I think things like DBZ and One Piece and other fighting shows of that nature are more entertaining to watch.

Wheres romance based things don't make a huge difference wether its animated or not.

Depends.

For example, the Higurashi mangas follow the visual novel more faithfully and cover more storytelling and development, while the anime falls short on this. In this case, the manga is better.

As for another example, I've read "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" and I've seen the movie. While the one that I read was a light novel, seeing it in action was much more intriguing then reading it.

Depends on the execution and development I'd say.

It just comes down to circumstances for me. If I'm traveling or just want to have something to get me to sleep, I'll read manga, otherwise if I have the time I'll prefer to watch anime.

It depends on the anime or manga. For some series I like the manga better, for others I like the anime.

As for overall, I prefer anime to some degree, but I prefer reading manga when I'm in a situation where I can't pay complete attention to what I'm doing, such as when I'm talking to my friends on AIM or web surfing. When I'm doing that I prefer manga because I can read it at my own pace instead of having to keep up with an episode of anime.

Always anime.

The only reasons manga is sometimes better is if the story goes further than the anime, or goes more into details.

Assuming there's both a Anime and a Manga version, both follow the some story and use similar style/character design. I'd chose Anime.

If the plot's differ from each other but still the same series, it'd vary on the series.

anime, it has the advantage of having music, voice acting, action scene that actually move and so on. liek i can think of quite a few shows that just do not or would not translate well to manga because they would have these things, like clannad, sword of the stranger, rahXephon(the godly anime wouldnt, there is a mnag version but its fucking atrocious)

I admit I'm more of an anime person, but that's because I haven't really put the time to develop my manga list. I will say that if there is a anime adaptation of a preexisting manga, that the manga will usually be better, but there are a few exceptions. I find some manga have GORGEOUS art that I have not seen in anime. Those who have read Nausicaa, Hokuto no Ken, or Shin Angyo Onshi know what I'm talking about. Of course, vice versa is also true.

Clannad is a bad compress story [ both arcs] a 90-200 hour game compressed to under 1/2 that in animation time

I can't say I care or that it matters. Everything has it's place and some formats work better for some stories. Without manga there would be a whole lot less anime but manga can't do what Visual Novels(provide choice, sound, etc) do but I don't see one format being outright better for storytelling.

It's kinda dumb to overlook either format giving that how long people have been using books and videos for stories.

Anime has potential to be better if done right. I feel like the manga follows the story a lot better while anime seems to have distinct restrictions where the story has to be compromised sometimes. But it's hard to say =P.

I prefer anime. Because color, sound, BGM, voices, and animation is better than black and white pictures with maybe a tiny bit more story material. Not to mention action scenes are terrible in manga form. IMO

I agree.. I've realised there are alot of good mangas that hasn't got a chance to go on screen, well not only manga, but also Manhwa, which don't get anime adaptations at all, and i guess there are alot of great Manhwa names. an anime for those would be great but it doesn't happen.. and reading those (manga, manhwa) really takes less time than watching an anime,
something else is the recaps and the flashbacks in an anime, which don't exist in manga. but i find waiting every week for a manga chapter is a pain, that's way i'm reading on going mangaz slowly and not reading new mangas, for anime it's a little bit better where 2 or more chapters are included, and the voices and the BGM are a plus in anime too.. but well, everyone got and can use a lil bit of imagination :P

I'm also with the people who think music is the real deal breaker. I can't read any manga or comics if I don't have appropriate music to listen while reading. And not just random music that I like, but music that fits the work perfectly.

I agree with you.

It's hard to determine which is better. Anime is dynamic, has a soundtrack. Manga usually makes up for it in the story, and we haven't given it everything on a plate, so we set our imaginations. I think that manga and anime is notable, if they well designed.

You know, I am not an expert and am biased by my own experience but started reading some works of Waita Uziga and it surprised me by how unimpressed they left me; specially Modern stories of the bizarre. It just seems they fell short in its shock value, as if the sound, movement or even colour in that case was lacking to transmit the feelings of the story.

In the same way I can say that I freaking love Yotsuba... but it seems I can't come to feel these, say, violent feelings in a manga as much as I do with anime; that the addition of animation and sound does make a huge difference. Then again, my experience with manga is so low it shouldn't count. But so far I prefer anime.

By the way, I am reading that some manga adaptations in anime are bad and too compressed, I understand it, but what difference does it make in this debate? We are not talking about specific franchises but the involving ability of each medium. If we want to talk about bad adaptations there's thousands of other threads.

Depends.
I personally like anime better because of the colours and everything making it more appealing. But then some animes dont have enough money to produce so they rush through with usually 12 ep ( a season ) A romance anime wouldnt be good enough in 12 ep's usually because there is not enough build up between the characters.

Few years back i would totally prefer anime over manga. but since then i started reading manga and it isnt so bad.

I was like this until recently when I just forced myself to bear with it for a bit. Once you do, you will realise just how awesome Manga is. I prefer Manga over Anime because it stays true to it's nature, Anime cuts things out to its leisure and sometimes can completely leave out key things or change the story (E.G the original FMA)

It's the exact same as a movie adaption of a book. The Book, If you're a book person, Is 99% of the time miles better than the movie.

I think Anime has the potential to be the better medium, but it is hindered by fillers, too much change to the original material, and stretching out scenes from the manga.

If done right though it can be great and better than the original manga. Yu Yu Hakusho would be an example of that in my opinion.

I generally prefer dialogue in manga as it is straight to the point. Manga also contains the full passion and meaning of the original creator. For example, I find the One Piece Manga much better than the anime. In fact I dropped the anime, but continued reading the manga. The manga has little details in the art that are lost in the Anime. It is very rare that an anime manages to take a author's work and make it better.

Anime usually depicts fight scenes better than manga. Sometimes you don't even know exactly what happened in a manga in a fight, but in the anime adaptation it is very clear and usually expanded upon. Anime #1 advantage is music. I absolutely adore well done Anime music and it really adds to the art. Voice Acting is a make or break. Great voice acting adds, while bad voice acting can really hurt characterization.

Overall,

Anime-Music/Fights
Manga-Everything Else

We are lucky in this industry to get two sides of a story. Whether you prefer one or the other you get twice the experience. It is also awesome that you have options as some people may like one and hate the other.

Depends on which one came first, but it's usually manga. Very rarely will I find that the music, voices, pacing, and animation actually add something that the manga was missing for me (Mushishi is one of the few examples I can think of). I also find manga easier to read since I can read it at my own pace which is almost always perfect for me, I rather like that. I can also get more story in less time with a manga. Also, anime will be limited by the number of episodes it's going to be decided from the start, unless it's a one shot, manga can often go on for as long as they're popular (sure, they have restrictions on page count for a particular chapter, but they usually don't have an overall pre-set number of volumes)

But I still enjoy both of them a lot and have a large physical collection of both of them.

I believe animation is the best medium out of all media from books to video games, for conveying fictional concepts under a rigid and standardized infrastructure. Hence, potential-wise, anime is more convenient for story-writers (who have adequate ideals and motive anyway).

Manga leaves more freedom for readers in terms of motion, sound, and everything subsidiary to them. Hence, it is more common for receivers to be satisfied with manga than anime in terms of preference deviation.

I just wish there were more animes that used animation to the fullest of its potential.

Funny, I always thought that the writer's true medium would be books and that animators/filmmakers were the ones that excel in animated works.

What potential? The potential to be the next Looney Toons or Scooby Doo? Anime seems to be pushing the envelope already in terms of story-telling and visual variety.

It's just a belief, from my own experiences.

By "story-writing" I mean within the realms of fiction, in terms of conveying unrealistic or out-of-the-box kind of ideas. Books leave everything from interpretation of words and above to the reader. Mangas leave everything from motion and sound and above to the reader. Video games give too much control of the characters in-game to the player. Live action films using real humans trigger the innate filters concerning cognition of the same species, which severely limits the variation of possible interpretation. Anime in that sense holds the balance between providing as much precise information as possible without triggering unneeded reception filters from the receivers. Hence, fictional story-tellers have the best chance of conveying precisely what they want and having receivers receive those ideas as precisely as they want it (especially if it's something humans wouldn't ordinarily think of) via animation. Animation in this case includes full CG of course, but it doesn't necessarily have to be.

As for potential, I mean whatever can be done with color and sound, and not necessarily what is generally defined as the template of anime.

I guess the closest anime I know to the ideal I'm talking about is Mushishi. But I think there's still a lot more that can be done with animation.

Anime, it lasts longer… as in 5 chapters = 1 episode or whatever. Also the voice actors add more emotion to something, which I can't seem to grasp when reading.
