VLC or Media Player Classic. Used to primarily use classic, but it prevented me from being able to watch several subs.

I use Windows Media Player the most. It plays almost all the files I throw at it. Anything that won't play or plays incorrectly I use Media Player Classic.

can someone tell me why MPC is the best though? i use it, but i realize it eats up twice as much memory as even realplayer. all i can see is some cool video options, which are quite cool actually, but not things i use for watching most shows.

For watching anime I use Media Player Classic only. It's small, clean and has every option I need when watching videos (audio normalizing, screenshots, jumps, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). It's the only one for me.

I use WMP for everything. There are only a few shows I've had trouble playing with it - I use MPC or VLC for those. I really hate VLC though. It'll usually play files that I can't get other players to open, but it crashes all the time, the interface sucks, and the subtitle support is horrid.

Zoomplayer is FTW X999999

i used to watch anime with vlc, but vlc sux 'cause it messes up the subtitles in mkv and ogm movie types. (subtitles lose the font or typesetting or whatever it is, and if a sentence is supposed to appear on the top of the screen, vlc shows it on the bottom and it gets mixed up with the ones already on the bottom and makes it unreadable

also, vlc sometimes has framerate drops).

I used to have trouble taking screenshots in MPC until I read a tip on another forum. Give this a try:

Go to View -> Options -> Playback -> Output
From there set the DirectShow Video to VMR9 (renderless)

I have no idea how it all works but once I did all that, I no longer got any errors taking screenshots with MPC.

BSplayer ver. 1.37 ftw~

LOL Apparently, I was able to get it to play everything. Well...OGG files (SailorMoonCenter's Sailor Moon movies) with dual audio and optional subtitles doesn't work with it though. It plays, but I couldn't get the subtitles to show. But that's fine. It's just one show.

MPC, because you can play anything with it.
Even .mov and .rm with the quicktime and real player alternative codecs.

That's the spirit, none of those codec's official programs will ever make it on my system.

My brother says that Zoom Player 5 (the new version) is even better than CCCP with Zoom Player... I haven't tried it though.

It can interface we with DirectShow filters very well (unlike WMP, which was the first player to use this system AFAIK, and it still fails at it), which are basically the codes/splitters that enable you to play a video. Without them MPC would be pretty much useless. Well, it does have some internal of it's own, but those are very outdated and are not recommended for usage.

As for VLC, I wonder whether most people know that it shreds style information from softsubs and leaves you with an ugly Arial font...

Here, I use MPC (with CCCP), and sometimes mplayer.

P.S. VMR9 is not recommended, it distorts the image in some cases and does some other weird stuff as well (hence it's known as the renderer of last resort, if nothing else works). Try "System Default". Generally "Overlay Mixer" is the recommended one, and it's the fastest one too. And in the end you can grab a screencap from ffdshow's panel, which is the most accurate and reliable way to do it.

cccp-> community codec pack, newest version includes Zoomplayer v5.00 so your brother is abit off ^^

need codecs to play stuff :)

and yes vlc trashes softsubs, wich blows, in zplayer you can alter the softsubs anyway you like, font/size/positioning I like it. Dunno if you can do it with the other players since I do not use them :)

I use VLC except it angers me..... I am absolutely enraged with it..

I see Windy uses MPlayer for Mkv (which VLC LOVES to crash while playing.. especially Darker than Black *cries*)
But what if they are soft subs? Does MPlayer support them? I have it on my computer, but I was told that they had no subtitle support, which confused me so I gave it a quick check and could not find it.. And then I was doing things, and it completely froze up and I got angery so I decided to ignore it.. hmm
*check it out*
OH MY, I went to help, and now I get it.. I have to go tell that person they were wrong! Muaha! *evil grin*

I like using VLC or Core Media Player. I don't really like VLC anymore because I can't skip forward like 5 seconds by pushing the forward arrow key like you can in winamp or core. It really helps during those long dramatic pauses..

MPlayer does have full support for softsubs, much better support than VLC and other standalone players in most cases, you just have to add the following into the config file;
ass=yes
embeddedfonts=yes
correct-pts=yes
sid=0

Now it should work correctly.

the sooner you move to Zoom Player (preferably CCCP with Zoom Player) the better.
VLC's Subtitle Support is worth less a clump of dust, and while viewing Gungrave and Hellsing Ultimate i have noticed a horrible Frame rate drop at some of the action scenes.
