Had abit higher expectations for this but still a pretty good movie (would have been better if it had been longer though).7/10.

Age sure is lucky getting to embrace Patema for a majority of the movie.

Didn't get the twist a first till I read a post here.So Age's society were the real inverted ones.

Absolutely loved it! The twist at the end was fantastic. So, apparently they reached the man made core on Age's dad's flying machine. That explains why it suddenly became hot!

The stars Age and his world saw are the lights on the construction done by the scientists that eventually disrupted gravity.

Age and Patema embracing one another all the time. So romantic.

A 9/10 for a splendid movie. :)

It was kinda boring until the very ending.
Maybe I just grew out of this type of stuff with super-villains, cute romance and "nothing is really happening"
6/10 for interesting concept (realization was meh) and great ending.

liked it just as much as i did the OVA only weak part for me was the weak antagonist but him dying to the irony of his beliefs was great.

I would have really liked to see a time skip.

Overall, it was pretty good, the villain felt a little unconvincing and usually I just wanted him off the screen. The world building was excellent from start to finish. This would have been good as a full series too, maybe even better.

Awesome stuff.... It Seems almost all questions were answered at the end....
But one thing... Why don't any humans live on the real earth surface???

Aside from Sappy Romance, Film was great....

The movie was pretty good, but not as good as it could've been.

The mustache twirler villain was pretty cheesy.

Overall I rather enjoyed it, although I do agree the villain was by far the weakest part of the story.

Still, the setting was interesting and it was done fairly well, even if the physics involved made my head hurt ;d

The only thing I could say I disliked about the movie was that the villain was really, really lame. The surreal scenes were nice as it gave as both worlds perspectives in a different camera angle. I'm tempted to rewatch the movie some day but with my laptop turned over (lol). I almost got confused by the movie, but finally understood it near the end. Solid 8/10 for me.

I thought once about gravity switch. It was terrifying, and i felt scared this whole anime. I'm affraid of haights so if everything got turned upside down i would sh*t my pants and fall dead.

I liked the story and how everything was connected. But rules in this world don't make much sense. World is flat? And on one side there is no space just some metal structure with lights flashing at night? Main characters holding each other sometimes walked on surface of the Earth, sometimes jumped super high, sometimes flew for miles without any harm? Authors were just bending their univers'se rules as they pleased to make the story work...

if there was one thing I thought this movie did great in, it would be the consistency with the whole inverted gravity concept. I don't see how the authors "bent their universe's rules", because all the gravity manipulation was within the laws of their universe. First of all, the metal sky just means Eiji's (or Age's) world is underground. It doesn't mean the world is flat. Second of all, I hope you understand basic physics because all that jumping and flying they did is essentially what it is. Honestly, the movie did a great job at staying within the general laws of physics (excluding the whole inverted gravity concept)

I agree! They did a great job with this. If you pay attention, you notice that Eiji is just a bit heavier than Patema, so they only go "upwards" when Patema has the weight on her foot or when she has her backpack. This aspect of the film is very consistent.

Finished this movie last night, it was quite good.

Patema and Age's world are very different, and they couldn't begin to understand each other... Until Age experience Patema's world first hand.

Very interesting.

Side note.
I just watch the trailer of movie "Upside Down"... The similarity between the 2 disturbed me greatly... Outside of the fact that Patema is more focus on character development aspect of the show... The rest of the trailer looked almost cut-and-paste.

Not even that, but as I mentioned in my post

"Some people on the site I was watching this on said that it was like Upside Down, but really, only the idea of inverted gravity is...everything else is completely different, from the focus (the live action was romance, also touched on discrimination) and there's no two skies thing going on."

It's not that the similar in concept disturbed me, but if you watch upside down trailer, you'll see a few scene that just screams cut and paste.

Particularly the most beautiful(imo) scene in Patema, where the world slowly span around 180 degrees, with the centerpoint focus on the middle of the scene where the sun shone.

As well as the anti-gravity mechanic involving heavy metal of different gravity rule.

This is the only film ever which has actually succeeded in making me slightly dizzy afterwards. Not even Gravity in 3D did that for me.

It was a pretty great, if weird experience. The plot rushed ahead a little bit too fast and it could've used some more touching moments, but overall it never really had a lot of missteps.

Teacap said:
I realise I'm a little late to the party here. How did they cover up his dad's "accident"? I wouldn't have thought a bullet wound was an easy thing to miss with the blood and all. How did they convince people it was the wrath of the gods or whatever when he'd clearly been shot?

The people who were present and close enough to see a gunwound could've easily been coerced by the totalitarian government to shut up about it.

I thought the movie was excellent. A solid 8/10 for me. Even if the physics weren't always solid, I still enjoyed it. That said, in the world of Patema, one could eventually switch orientations by eating food from the world you'd like to be facing.

Got a better insight after seeing it, real helpful indeed. What still bothered me is that how they differentiate which things/objects are supposed to be inverted and which aren't, like Age's dad machine is inverted but those debris aren't..

To my understanding not everything was inverted (obviously), though I don't think we can know for sure what was the pattern/variable that decided X stuff would be inverted.

There's one small detail of this movie that has been bothering me a lot... What ever happen to the first security guard that attacked Patema? The one that caused her to fall into the inverted world to begin with.

I mean he couldn't have just left... it's why he was in that room away from Patema to begin with. And he seemed awfully calm compared to how the others of the inverted world were flipping out when they first came to Patema's world...

I watched this yesterday, and man this was so much better than I expected.
Slow pacing, but execution was really damn good. It also made me (and my buddy) mess up our real gravity thinking. When I was walking around after watching this I felt weird man, that was an epic feeling. My friend was afraid of that his cookies' crumbles may have gone upwards, lmao.

The story itself feels sort of simple, but it definitely is deep somehow.
Really, really interesting film, the whole idea is just something I really like. I always enjoy post-apocalyptic stories.

9/10. But I might put that to 8/10 later because I just might be a bit hyped up right now. ;)

First movie I've seen from Yasuhiro Yoshiura; another name to add to the list of great movie makers from Japan.

Really nice plot twist at the end; seems the people from the 'outside' world where the inversed people after all; and loved how the bad guy met his end. 8.5/10
