Synopsis

An arrogant scientist awakens in the middle of a muddy pigpen, and the last thing he remembers is eating a raw pig liver and collapsing in the subway. He quickly gathers that he has turned into a pig and is now in a strange fantasy land. As he struggles to grasp reality, a young girl named Jess comes to his aid. Jess happens to be a Yesma—a discriminated class of servants distinguished by their telepathic abilities and the silver collars around their necks. Despite his inappropriate thoughts about her, Jess makes sacrifices for his sake, and the pig resolves to repay her the best he can within the limits of his new body.

But Jess' generosity does not absolve her from the prejudice the Yesmas face daily, and the pig begins to suspect that Jess is in greater danger than she thinks. While he wants to visit the royal capital and beg the king to change him back into a human, the pig realizes that he cannot simply turn his back on his kind savior.

Living thus far, I never imagined being the envy of a pig. What are the chances of finding someone so kind and heartwarming that she is willing to fully understand and accept you? Tonally dissonant and poorly produced, but an intriguing story with some surprisingly hard-hitting emotional high notes.

ButaLiver appears to be a typical isekai of the 2020s (this time the twist is that the protagonist is reincarnated as a pig), but rather than giving him some kind of overpowered skill that allows him to cruise along the plot with ease, the setting puts our hero in a difficult spot with very little to work with. The heroine (unfortunately) still falls back into a stereotypical mold and is way too comfortable to put up with the hero's oftentimes wildly inappropriate inner thoughts. This was horrible, and I hated every minute of it. Gritty, crude, edgy, repulsive in some parts, dramatic, pointless, and dark.
The few combat scenes are clumsy and make no sense (but I blame that on the low production value), and there are lots of plot holes (like that about the black ristas and their use conditions... you'll see what I mean.) Did I already mention it was dark? Way darker than what you'd expect from an isekai with the MC reincarnating as a pig.
I'll quickly recap the premise: a society with a class of all-female slaves with no human rights whatsoever, and whose bones ... and organs sell for a high price. At some point, when they're 16, they're left on their own devices and told to cross the country alone to reach the royal capital, passing through woods and towns teeming with lowlifes and bandits eager to kidnap, [redacted], and kill them for sellable parts. You're free to guess where this is going. Oh, and the MC is a pig.

The MC is hella weak for the standard of isekais. He's just a pig with a human mind, nothing more, nothing less, and he gotta make do with his witts if he wants his protegé to survive the journey. As the FMC is constantly in danger of being taken and quite literally sold piece by piece after days of torture, the stakes are high, and the show doesn't shy away from its premises by making the MC suddenly OP. No - he's a pig and stays a pig all the way through. Every bad encounter, even with the lowest mob guy - merely cannon fodder to the average isekai Kirito - here is a life or death situation. You can sometimes feel the despair of the FMC & co. as they jump from one tragedy to the other.

Would I recommend it? No, I wouldn't. I'll be blunt: don't watch it - you have no reason to.
I watched it, so I have no choice now: I can't un-watch it, can I? And since I did, I find myself compelled to give it a score, but you're still in time to avoid this trainwreck.

Still, why 10 if I hated it so much? Well... it was also wholesome at times, compelling, and relatively surprising. It kept me glued (for better or worse) and had some touching moments, dialogues, and scenes that *abundantly justified the score.* The dynamic between the FMC and the MC feels believable - they feel like real people establishing a relationship under the worst circumstances. Moreso, I actually *cared* about the characters (more than anything else in the anime), and that's something rare for modern isekais. Indeed, I believe the author would do much better if he just changed the genre. If he abandoned the idea of writing overly complex fantasy worlds nobody cares about and the isekai genre as a whole, and instead wrote a realistic drama focusing on the characters, I'm sure he'd dish out some very valid works.

Tldr - the 10 is mainly for the characters.
