Good Night World

In the online game "Planet," there is a powerful team of four players. This team goes by the name "The Akabane Family," and its members are a pseudo-family that only exists in the game. Although they aren't aware of it, these four players are actually a broken family in real life.

A shut-in older brother. A high-achieving younger brother. A father who is not respected by his own children. A mother who neglects her own household. They do not know the warmth of family. They also don't know that the warmth of their online family is only a passing feeling. And most of all, they don't know they are a real family.

Centered on the deeds of the Akabane Family in the online game "Planet," the story features battles against monsters, clashes with other guilds, and the machinations surrounding "Black Bird," the final objective of the game. The tale takes a major turn as it entangles the real world and this real family.

I went into Good Night World not expecting much—honestly, I didn’t think it’d be my thing. But wow… I was so wrong. This anime completely caught me off guard in the best way possible.

It explores AI in a way that feels real—not just futuristic or sci-fi for the sake of it. The way it touches on the emotional and psychological impact of AI, especially when it begins to spiral out of control, hit way closer to home than I expected. It reflects our world now more than we want to admit—and that’s what makes it so powerful.

They absolutely nailed it. From the story, to the ... pacing, to the raw emotion, this was a masterpiece. I was hooked from start to finish.

And honestly? I want more. I need more. Please.

Mixed Feelings

A show with such off pacing. Interesting premise, takes a while to take off, eventually picks up, and then utterly fails the landing.

First couple episodes are pretty standard, if not a bit dull. Sword Art Online rip off. Except in this story, the main character is an extremely unlikeable shut-up (though this is done on purpose, I think it only made me feel nothing towards him).

The twist in episode 6 was insane. It's rare that a show in this genre actually shocks me with a twist I didn't see coming at all. I was invested to watch until the end at this point.

But then the ... second half of the show does nothing with this twist, and it kinda just falls into 'big battle as town is destroyed' trope at the end. It also tries to have some emotional father/son moments, which ALMOST work but the fact the main character is still unlikeable kept me from enjoying them. It doesn't earn any of the emotional payoff it's attempting to do becasue I feel nothing for any of the characters or haven't been invested enough in the 'dead sister' storyline.

Also the BAD HAIRLINE REVEAL at the end with the brothers is insane I laughed outloud. An insane thing to include.

Shit, shitty, shittiest and shithead were the most used words in the English dub. A major down-point to its enjoyment.
It stood out like a sore thumb and made the show worse than it could be, but that’s not everything, obviously…

The show has an interesting enough concept with the families, but it was too obvious from the beginning. Not like the rest of the plot. Most plot elements just appeared out of thin air with no further explanation, which made it hard to follow. But they didn’t stop there. The final episodes just put plot element after element onto the pile of plot, which resulted ... in too many actions unexplained. Most just felt way too random and unconnected to the starting concept.
By the end of episode 12 I just felt unsatisfied by all the questions unanswered. I had to sort of force myself through the anime to finish it.

Well, but the art, which seems sort of generic, did a good job at underlining emotions like sorrow and hate. That’s basically the entire pallet of emotions most characters feel after a certain point. It made the show feel like spinning in place. No actual development happening, besides the plot progressing.

Despite those points, the world had a setup, which I could have enjoyed in a different setting. Same for the characters. I believe the was put much effort in creating them, as I can see the general idea of each, but some just didn’t seem to fit just enough.

And just a funny fact: The beginning of the ED reminded me of that one popular song from frozen.
