Every once in a while, you just need to relax, chill and wach something easy. That's when Sketchbook is perfect. It doesn't hve a lot of humor, and the story is, well, not a story. The animation quality isn't anything outstanding either. What catched me when I watched Sketchbook was how calm and quiet it was. And of course, the cats! If you like cats, that's a reason in itself to give Sketchbook a try.

Story-wise, it just follows an episode-by-episode formula, with each new episode bringing abotu an event totally unrelated to what happened in earlier episodes. Each episode is very tranquil, and the pacing read more

When you first sit down to watch Sketchbook Full Colors you need to know what it is your getting in to. First if you are someone who needs action and a story driven series to keep you entertained, Sketchbook is not your kind of show. This is a very slow and methodical slice of life series that will have you feeling at ease and relaxed.. or asleep depending on the episode you’re viewing.

Almost the first thing I am reminded of when viewing Sketchbook is Aria, and rightly so as they were both produced by the same studio. There are even several appearances read more

Ok, by now i've been thinking about what to write for about 30 minutes already. The same was when i was trying to write a review for Aria. I simply do not know what to say.
Might as well explain the ratings ...

1 for story as it had no story. While Aria the Natural had a different story every episode, this one has none. It's easier to add those mini-stories to Aria because of it's sci-fi elements. Adding that to a bunch of students' everyday life is hard.

9 for art because i loved it. Again, similarities to Aria can be seen.

10 for sound. The ED songs read more

It is simple enough to gather a pile of archetypal characters, drop them into a static setting, weave them into an episodic and ultimately insignificant plot, and then cover up these boredom-inducing elements by labeling the show as "relaxing" or "healing." Creating a truly successful slice of life series is much more difficult. The show must retain the hallmarks of the genre (subtlety and atmosphere, among others) while still telling an interesting story. There is a thin line between a smart but subdued series and an absolute snorefest. With its quirky sense of humor, fun plot, and loveable cast of characters, Sketchbook ~full color'S~ is read more

Recommendations

Anime: Aria The Animation
Aria and Sketchbook share the slice of life genre. The pace of these two is incredibly slow and they are both very good, especially after a tiring day at work. I also noticed that cats play quite a big role in both of these. Even the company who animated these two is the same. The only major difference between these two would be the sci-fi found in Aria.

Anime: Hidamari Sketch
Slice of life, circles around art. If you've seen one of them, watch the other too. I enjoyed both of them ..

Anime: GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class
GA has more comedy than Sketchbook, but they both are still very similar. Both shows are about a fairly normal girl surrounded by odd people in her art class. GA is kind of like the middle ground between Sketchbook and Hidamari, so if you liked those, you'll probably like GA.

Anime: Azumanga Daioh
What can I say? They're both slice of life shows with a lot of kitties. Sure, Sketchbook has a lot more, but without the kitties, neither shows would be the same. Sketchbook leans more towards the very cute, somewhat slow-paced slice of life genre, while Azumanga Daioh tries much harder to get laughs. Yet despite that I can see a lot of Azumanga Daioh fans enjoying Sketchbook (and vice-versa, though most people have seen Azumanga Daioh).

Anime: Natsume Yuujinchou
relaxing atmospheres, yet natsume has more action and supernatural element as well. yet both seem to show how beautiful world it is and ends each episode with a nice calming feeling

Anime: Tamayura
Makers from the same studio. Both have a similar premise of finding friendship through art and photography in a laidback setting. Cats make recurring appearances in both stories.
