Synopsis

Ocean Waves is a high school love story set in Kochi, Japan. Morisaku Taku and Matsuno Yutaka are best friends when a girl from Tokyo named Muto Rikako transfers to their school. Excluding herself from group activities, she's eventually labeled a snob. Matsuno has a crush on Rikako, so it's no surprise that he gets a little jealous when Morisaku and Rikako start spending more time together. The rumors around school get worse, but Morisaku still insists there is nothing between him and Rikako.

This is one of the most underrated ghibli movies. It's certainly quite different from the other ghibli movies. It doesn't contain any fantasy and Hayao Miyazaki isn't involved in the production anyhow. It's just a slice of life/drama/romance story, a hell of a good one too. Ocean Waves may be one of the most natural animes I've seen. It doesn't throw in a load of super tragic drama or anything of that kind. It only tells the story of a group of teenagers as they walk the path to adulthood.

The story is takes place in Kochi, Japan, a small town by the sea. Morisaku Taku read more

Ocean Waves is not trying to be anything more than it is, and what it is, is absolutely fine. The story moves very smoothly and the perspective of our young protagonist Taku is set lucid immediately, showing classic hero potential in challenging his school on a decision he finds unfair. He is rational, hard working and emotionally moral. He takes a sight of Rikako, a fiery, athletic beauty and childishly does not realise that he is mad about her, fine, however:-

As a strong upholder of ROMANCE, Ocean Waves is not critical enough in delivering the heart wrenching moments which it clearly builds up for, as read more

Individual’s world is very small: one can’t understand others’ actions; they may seem silly, egocentric, and even senseless. Characters’ doings are not on the surface, you can see only waves of that ocean, these are the only hints in understanding human beings. Ocean Wave is about these small waves.

It does not have a straightforward plot, though it can be called unique. It can seem hard to get into, because what the movie shows is not some type of romance, drama or anything different. From that point it has a slight similarity with 5 centimeters per second. It is about persons’ lives read more

Ocean Waves is a rather obscure movie of the Studio Ghibli kanon. It is a made for TV movie with the younger generation of animators working at Ghibli at the time, so it really isn't surprising that it is little known. It is a departure from the norms of Studio Ghibli, not only because it doesn't involve Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, but it also one of the movies more grounded in reality. So without the big talents that made the studio, where the movie stand? It's pretty good, but a far cry from Studio Ghibli at top form.

The story is one of young adults read more

Recommendations

It's another heartwarming, coming-of-age story by Ghibli. Like Ocean Waves, It's also one of the few Ghibli films not directed by Miyazaki.

Both main characters reminisce about their pasts
Both anime follow a similar story where the boy is in a kind of near the girl, but both are silent and there is a silent bond between them and both have an end with a positive hint.
There's a similarity in the relationships between the guy and the girl in both of the anime.
Both of these anime have the dramatic touch.

Both of the movies focus on the interaction between the main characters.

Both stories contain a girl who find the school that they are in boring and is of no real challenge to them. Rikako Muto and Haruhi are amazing in sports and in studies and are considered the 'perfect girl' for any guy but are really hard to come close to. They also have an air of arrogance which other school student notice and dislike to an extent of being jealous of them. They both eventually meet an average guys whose within thier same year that don't really have interest towards them but soon find a deep profound love for each other without realizing it.
