I mostly watch Asian dramas now (primarily Chinese and Korean), but I occasionally watch donghua. I watch anime very rarely these days, but I'm open to watching one if (1) it appeals to my nostalgia, or (2) I just happen to come across a new one that catches my interest.
A good friend of mine loves Haruhi to a 10/10, and when I questioned him about it, he answered: I genuinely think it has a wonderfully original premise and toys methodically with its myriad of genres, nimbly weaving them together like an erector-set, then deconstructing them to a more comtemplative rhythm. It's not parody or satire by any stretch, but it's definitely wistfully commentative when it decides to get all meta. Yeah, the writing and dialogue are just fantastic, particularly Kyon's bouts of snarky, lemony narration. Oh, and I loved the characters; the main leads in particular are terrific foils with great chemistry.
Not to say I have any idea what he's talking about, but maybe you might. I found it nothing more than another school anime with a headstrong, unpredictable female and an annoying, unfunny male lead, cheaply spiced by shifting the episodes around. There were a few nice set pieces though; like if every episode was as excellent as the one with the giant alien, I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more. But the snorefest of a Haruhi movie that currently holds the #7 spot on MAL (and used to hold the #1 & #2 spot for an incredibly long time)? Unbelievable.
Just read your excellent post here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=456971
And I just wanted to say that I hope you continue to post on MAL, and make the forums a better place than its somewhat juvenile, pointless, and braindead status quo. But of course, the average age for this fandom is pretty darn low.
Oh, and it's nice to see another who didn't get all the hubbub with Haruhi :)
Let's see... Out of what I can remember right now, I've shown her Ouran High School Host Club, Nana and The Wallflower, and she loved them all to bits (mostly Ouran and Nana but whatever). So, yeah, I guess we do have common ground. She even watched them all in one sitting just about, though, it ended up being a particularly bad experience for me as that meant that I couldn't get anywhere close to watching anime for myself, as we shared the same shitty computer and internet connect at the time. You can believe that I'm never making that mistake again ^_-
Oh yeah, I know that feeling. Besides one of my cousins, I couldn't get any of my family or friends to watch anime. Maybe a Miyazaki film here and there but that's about it. And when I do find someone who's somewhat into it, they're not as into it as I am, like you said. I've tried with my twin sister though, but she's too much of a pansy to watch any of the good-to-great series out there. Like, Detective Conan/Case Closed makes her feel uneasy, Fullmetal Alchemist makes her cringe, and Rurouni Kenshin made her almost pass out. What a pansy, right? Anyway, to get an idea of how bad it is with her, I found her still watching those lame PBS Kids cartoons the other day *barf*
You're right. Personally though, I want to have a little more knowledge as to the happenings during each game. I've been meaning to start studying it for about a week now, but I keep watching more and more episodes before I get the chance :O

I hope we'll see you there in some more topics.
Fai loves you. For sure.
Kudos.
I guess it's time to revive Fai D. Flourite Fanclub a bit.
Would you like to join What would you say to Fai if in person? or Fai crossover pairing(s) discussions?
If not, it would be fantastic if you could make any other topic you like.
Hope to see you in the club! Best!
So, how do you like MyAnimeList so far?
