It's funny those raving about Pluto today likely were not even born when Astroboy was even a thing. It's nostalgia without the actual emotion-memory, some sort of reverence by reputation perhaps? I too find Pluto archaic, in the sense ideas get thrown around without much in depth exploration, and expositions are not often tightly woven but episodic and scene by scene. Having not read the source, I cannot tell if it's just poor direction or the material itself. Those ideas may be fresh 40 years ago but not anymore in that form. If the original Astroboy was re-imagining the hopeful nature of human development, Pluto manages to de-humanise the human characters in the show instead. Robots and humans should not be mutually exclusive as central to the story nor should robots be bound as they appear at a foundational level by their human creators in Pluto.
