Heyy nice to hear from you! I'm okay thanks. Don’t feel bad, I haven’t been watching any movies either. I can’t even remember the last time I logged onto Letterboxd. All I’ve been doing is watching cricket and playing video games haha. At least you are being productive (wait, are you getting married?). I hope you can find some free time at some point. What are you planning to watch?
Nothing seems to catch my eye nowadays. I don’t even feel like rewatching Hero haha. But I heard David Lynch died the other day so maybe I was thinking of watching some of the movies I haven’t seen by him yet like Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway etc. I was wondering if you had ever seen any of those? (and if so, which one would you recommend).
I agree with you on the point that our experience with a given work of art is entirely subjective, but I still think that the show itself is still an objective thing. These are objects that exist in our world, frames of animation, music and voice acting, all those things are in themselves finite in meaning and objective in nature. So while I do agree that our ways of viewing these things is entirely up to our personal experience, when we inevitably try to critique them, we attempt to remove ourselves from these experiences and see the work as the object it is. If we look at it that way, we can find definite flaws, things that hinder what it is trying to say, or shortcomings. In other words, art itself isn't subjective, but we surely are, though that doesn't stop us from trying to understand it, after all, if everything truly was just a matter of opinion, we could not improve at our craft, as every flaw we try to fix would only be another element of style. If art truly were 100% subjective in nature, then art would hold no meaning to itself.
Jesus, was that too pretentious? Sorry 'bout that, hope you don't mind.
Sorry for the slow response! Been a hectic time in my life - I recently became a father.
I frankly haven't played a ton of VNs, but I've mostly enjoyed what I have. However, that's partially because several of the ones I've played are tied to anime or franchises I was already a fan of, such as Steins;Gate, Fate/stay night or Higurashi (which I just finished this month and plan to read Umineko in 2025). There are also some VN-adjacent game series that I enjoy, like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa, but I don't really consider them to be VNs personally because they have a bit "too much" gameplay.
Anyone getting upset over numbers as it relates to art is a lost cause if they really believe ratings matter without comprehension of the person behind it.
I guess that's what he has to resort to when he can't find any quote mines from Chibi or other YTers, lol. After all, I don't think he even watches anime anymore, and certainly isn't caught up on or watching even half the stuff he belittles, including Re:Zero. He just reminisces about his good old days with LotGH. Where is ForClayet? On the YT comments? Though I would have to say that a lot of things that I'm not keen on in previous seasons of Re:Zero are much more pronounced here.
