M27 became the highest-grossing movie in this long franchise and I'm not too surprised. The movie is located in a real-life location, the case references a historical character Hijikata Toshizo, and Kaito Kid, one of the most popular characters of the franchise, is involved. In addition, older DC fans watching this movie should recognize the similarities to M7: a code, a treasure, slower pacing, and Hattori Heiji being the coolest person in the movie.
M27 deviated from the past couple of movies by being more of an investigative movie, and considering how heavily the movie revolves around Japanese culture, M27 is less accessible than the action-packed

Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 26
After a long marathon of previous DC movies, I finally got to watch movie 26 in theaters, and it did not disappoint! The hype was justified. The BO finally returned, and they were threatening throughout the movie. They set the tone from the very beginning of the movie, and that menacing atmosphere was present throughout most of the movie. The usage of the supporting characters was balanced, as all of them had moments to shine. Haibara, the movie's deuteragonist, stood out the most after Conan. Some of the recent DC movies have begun focusing more on character ... Jul 20, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 25
This movie was just cliche upon cliche, cheesy moments upon cheesy moments...yet I loved every second of it. Movie 25 fully embraces "character" as the central focus and created the most emotional DC movie ever (so far, I have yet to see M26). Friendship, romance, tragedy, anger, betrayal, there were plenty of dynamic relationships shown throughout the movie, yet all were balanced well. None of the major characters introduced were marginalized, all were treated with care. Then, the soundtrack of the movie was superb. Yugo Kanno took over from the legendary Katsuo Ono and brought over ... Jul 19, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 24
Old DC fans will be disappointed with movie 24, as the case presented here is a tad bit simple, as the case is as straightforward as it gets for DC. However, the movie was still quite entertaining, driven by excellent animation, good BGM, and unique ways of committing crimes (yet still not as ridiculous as whatever movie 22 was doing). In addition, despite the simplicity of the case, the story was coherently presented, which was an improvement coming off of movie 23. The FBI and Sera are back, and this time we also see Akai's other ... Jul 18, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 23
Of all the movies that I thought needed more run time, this one needed it the most. Movie 23 finally introduced our beloved cast in a new country: Singapore. Kaito Kid is back, and this time used in an intriguing case. In addition, the movie finally decided to focus on Sonoko for once, this time alongside Makoto Kyogoku, both of whom are somewhat under-focused in the main series. The movie automatically gets a bump up for utilizing a different country as the setting, as DC fans naturally do not see Conan traveling internationally. In addition to the ... Jul 17, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 22
Movie 22 finally veers into more mature themes not typically seen in the DC universe. Here, the PSB set up Kogoro as the suspect through underhanded methods in order to protect Japan, and the movie successfully made the PSB into the bad guys. In a not-so-subtle way, the movie both criticizes and praises law enforcement and their "do whatever is necessary to protect the nation". At the end of the day, movie 22 is similar to movie 17: a propaganda movie, and the movie does a fine job executing this aspect. With that said, movie 22 struggles ... Jul 16, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 21
Similar to movie 12, the subject matter of movie 21 isn't going to be of interest to some, particularly something like karuta, which is only culturally relevant to Japan. I enjoyed the movie overall, despite the subject matter. At the end of the day, a good DC movie presents an interesting case, a clever trick or a difficult code, good action sequences, and strong characters/interactions, and this movie hits all except the trick/code (non-existent in the movie). In particular, I thought the action sequences were spectacular, complemented by the lovely BGM this time. While the romance ... Jul 14, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 20
Movie 20 deviates significantly from a typical DC movie, as it does not focus on mystery this time, but focuses fully on being an action thriller. In addition, the movie is much more focused on characters and relationships, as the movie delves a lot into DB's blossoming friendship with Curacao. As long as the movie executes well on the genre and the theme, it is okay for a DC movie to not have a good mystery, and movie 20 does execute well...for the most part. Curacao is unique among BO agents, as she is the first one ... Jul 12, 2023
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 19
Movie 19 is decent. The plot is decent. The case is decent. Kaito Kid was used decently. The action sequences were decent. And that's why it's not among the top-tier DC movies. It doesn't do anything outright bad (like some of the silly moments in movie 18), but it doesn't do a whole lot to stand out either. It's just a decent movie that could have been a TV special instead. Two pros: the set, as some of the shots near the end with Conan were gorgeous, as well as the music, which does a good enough ... Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 18
This movie almost had everything to be a great DC movie: a good case, a good code, a menacing criminal and a unique motivation, fantastic action scenes, new supporting characters (first movie appearances for Sera and the FBI), etc. However, our beloved hero and his friends collectively had one brain cell in this movie, and watching the movie as it progressed was increasingly frustrating. They already know that the suspect will shoot at them in the first part of the movie when Sera got shot in the helmet, why is Conan turning his back to the ... |
