HAHA I took an anime class in college that covered this show. Wagner in space is a CONCEPT 👌

Overall I really enjoyed it! The direction is absolutely marvelous, and Watashi's VA deserves a gold medal for his performance. The middle episodes dragged a bit for me, probably because I couldn't see how they related to the overall story aside from the obvious endless repetition bit. I think this is a rare gem that will actually be more fun to rewatch than the first time around.

I saw one of your comments about you being skeptical about Quan Zhi Gao Shou/The King's Avatar. Eh, actually, that guy is in the minority and a bit of a troll. While his review does have valid points, it's really just a person's opinions. I would suggest at least watching the 1st episode of it and then judge it for yourself.

If anything, it's a refreshing departure from the typical "trapped in a video game" genre that most game anime are nowadays. This anime doesn't have any of that.

Princess Tutu > Utena > Sailor Moon (WARNING: nostalgia bias) > Madoka, IMO.

Be warned though, Utena is quite known for re-using footage like crazy (also one one thing Ikuhara loves to do, not always for budget reasons, though) and having some really annoying comedy filler.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show as much as I did (it's my #6 anime of all time). There's probably a lot of stuff I could pick up on a rewatch (there's so much going on with all the symbolism and foreshadowing that it's quite hard to stomach it all on one watch IMO).

If there's one thing I really love with Ikuhara shows, is how the ending are almost always kind of uplifting and hopeful, no matter how bittersweet they are (especially in the case of Utena).

That last scene was indeed at the beginning, very excellent foreshadowing!

I dunno, maybe the liked it more as a SoL with mystery rather than how hectic it got later on? I don't know, but in either case, your friends are missing out for sure.

Eh, Yuri Kuma is kind of in a weird spot for me, honestly. The story/themes and all are still interesting/fun and the symbolism is a lot easier to understand than in previous shows, but I'm not really that invested in the characters so far (8/12 episodes).
It kind of feels like he's given us no real reason to care for them, really (which he did excellently in Penguindrum and Utena IMO).

With that said: give it a shot. It has all the magnificent weirdness you could expect from Ikuhara (and A LOT of more direct fanservice than before, if that's your thing).

Yeah, you should expect even more twists in the later episodes, haha!
