Two Day Box Office of One Piece Movie Exceeds Ponyo

According to Eiga.com, the box office of the first two days of One Piece: Strong World was 1 billion and 38 million yen ($11.8 million), which exceeded that of Gake no Ue no Ponyo ($11.6 million). The One Piece movie was premiered on 188 screens and Ponyo was shown on 481 screens. The average income per screen established the Japanese record.

Toei Film announced that they will additionally print 1 million copies of the "volume 0" of One Piece manga book, which is a giveaway for the audience.

I hope this sticks it to Ghibli. It's showing them that we aren't going to shit bricks and praise them for every fucking film they make. I really want to watch this, but I'm not caught up with the show.

Hrmm, I would say the MANGA is that popular, cuz I kno lots of Japs who read it but don't watch the show. So it's likely most manga fans went to see it just to get Volume 0.

And at least that guy said "japs", and not "nips". I hate being called a nip, it just sounds so wrong...

This just goes to show you the awesomeness of One Piece. I mean if they've been in the top 3 in Japan for the past 10 years then that has to say something.

It's not surprising since One Piece has a whole slew of other movies and a series to boot. Ponyo is one movie with no series to its name and so no followers unlike One Piece.

Since I haven't gone into One Piece yet (On Hold), the movie doesn't hold as much interest to me. It looks good though, from the 5 or so episodes I've watched.

Living and teaching at junior high schools in Japan now I find it surprising that this news is surprising. One Piece is without a doubt this generation of J-kids' (and many, many adults') Dragonball!
