Main Cast of 'Nihon Chinbotsu 2020' Anime Series Announced

The official blog for the Nihon Chinbotsu 2020 (Japan Sinks 2020) anime series revealed main cast members on Thursday. The 10-episode series will debut worldwide exclusively on Netflix in 2020.

The Mutou siblings, Ayumu and Gou, will be played by Reina Ueda (Darwin's Game) and Tomo Muranaka (World Trigger), respectively. Yuko Sasaki (Kaze to Ki no Uta Sanctus: Sei Naru Kana) will play the children's mother, Mari, and Masaki Terasoma (Steins;Gate) their father, Kouichirou.


Masaaki Yuasa (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!, Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara) is helming the anime at Science SARU, with Pyeonggang Heo (Ping Pong the Animation episode director) at the series director. Toshio Yoshitaka (Dragon Ball Super) is writing the script. Naoya Wada (Devilman: Crybaby animation director) is designing the characters. Kensuke Ushio (Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)) is composing the music.


Other staff members include color designer Satoshi Hashimoto (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri), photography director Toshikazu Kuno (Hero Mask), sound director Eriko Kimura (Penguin Highway), and editor Kiyoshi Hirose (Mob Psycho 100).


The anime series is adapting late author and screenwriter Sakyou Komatsu's 1973 sci-fi novel Nihon Chinbotsu (Japan Sinks). A live-action film adaptation opened in Japan that year, earning over 2.82 billion yen. Gainax co-founder Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla) remade the film in 2006, recording a box office revenue of 5.34 billion yen. The novel has also been adapted as a live-action drama that aired from 1974 to 1975.
