What does? Honestly I'm still baffled as to what Japan is seeing in this movie and yet at the same time I'm kind of not when I think of what the audience for anime is like now and how they just seem so content and easily placated. Like it looks just so utterly average and all I keep hearing is that the heroine is cute and hot and the main dude is kind of cool and it has some glitzy visuals and good CGI but like what about that has people losing their minds over it? Is it the Hollywood Hype effect Japan seems to be mastering?
I know I'm sounding like a broken record here but I really just have totally lost the ability to understand why what's popular in anime culture is anymore and how anime is just kind of done at this point for people that want something a little more than just fanservice and the next big Gen Urobuchi title even if other people can't see it or don't give a fuck cause they're so used to reveling in it all. It'd all just seem so random if there weren't a certain commonality of factors that seem to coalesce around rewarding greed and mediocrity over everything else. It's just about the most discouraging thing ever. I don't hate anime but I cannot be pleased with where the culture is at right now and just cheer for this stuff the same way others do. By all looks Japan just really wants to kill any potential it's own animation industry has to be anything more than disposable erotica centered around some basic set of themes and ideas that have no relevance to anyone other than hardcore otaku.
Like others have said though at least stuff like Kaguya that doesn't revel in the mediocrity and constant celebration of all things that are otaku is getting some critical attention overseas. Anno apparently just said the other day too that he thinks by the next decade Southeast Asia is going to overtake Japan in terms of it's animation industry and the way things are going I can totally see it. Japan just does not want to get any better and broaden it's horizons and is pretty much hopeless at this rate. That said it's getting kind of hard to care anymore where things end up at this point and it looks like the odds are good I'll be spending a lot more time than I already even am right now with my other hobbies by next year and just kind of let the new audience deal with and find whatever it is their going to find and take out of the new wave of anime culture since currently nothing outside of a couple of OVA's looks particularly interesting for the first half of the year.
If things take a more interesting turn in the near future though with regard to anime great, if not I'll hardly say I'm surprised. In any case the highlight of the anime year for me has definitely been Me!Me!Me! since it just so utterly perfectly encapsulates where anime and it's fanbase is right now in terms of it's relationship in such a blunt and layered way that it's hard to believe it's mainly just supposed to be a music video. To bad most people kind of just miss the point of it all and take it as more fap fodder lol. :/

Lol at ppl taking estimates seriously when every single time it turns out to be a gross overestimation or underestimation
Only when a show ranks really high for a long time against other popular titles or when there just isn't that much popular being preordered period. Other than that stalker can be surprisingly accurate with it's predictions.
And for the underestimations, it usually happens for anime with major storefront bias such as many female oriented series at Animate, or other rare series such as Love Live! at Animate, gamers, and softmap.

OMG. Cross Ange is going to sell 5k - 7k? YES! Didn't expect that at all. LOL!
If you see the summer and spring this year average sale chart, you will realize that there are at least 6 anime each season that have higher sale than Cross Ange. This fall even seems to sell less than last year winter
(well of course it won't sell less than last year winter )
Yeah I know it's astonishingly bad, especially for the shows that lack the backing of the bigger producers. At least that Yuuki Yuna show looks like it might pull off a miracle, especially considering it had almost no buzz, hype or advertising going in and lacks a major producer as a backer to steal all the money and potential it might have for themselves. Anime definitely needs more examples like that for sure that just sort of do it entirely on their own as original franchises through word of mouth and winning it's audience over the old fashioned way. Other than that though yeah extremely grim for a Fall season.

I've gotta cut off all the bs you're spouting before some people believe it.
That gundam thing has been said alot of times they're focusing on new fans and old fans, how have you not heard of it? :Odoubtful:O
Go complain to american cartoon creators please, cause the art style and animation SUCKS, that's the real tragedy.
Why are you replying like you're trying to quote some memes or something. Almost nothing you're saying to me makes any sense whatsoever nor has any relevance to anything I'm saying or the topic at hand. Are you sure you're okay?
Dec 17, 2014 9:12 AM by PeacingOut
All these sales mean nothing really, seems like the creators are only focusing on the source material and merchandise sales, the anime sales are irrelevant.
I don't know if that's the right direction to go or not but whatever, I'm sure none of these anime will lose that much money they expected these sales in the first place and if it's a hit then it's a bonus for them.
[So basically your whole baiting confrontational shtick and trying to use the most inflammatory language and framing conceivably possible in this situation doesn't really hold much water so much as you are making these wild assumptions that I think and look at things exactly the same as your average MALer or "real fans" as you seem to be implying. Like you could not have conceivably come up with more of a stock response that just does not fit the situation whatsoever if you had tried man.

It's sad to see the casuals and normal fans go away for the hardcore crowd, the anime industry would be balanced and would make more money if there were more anime for casual fans along with anime meant for Otaku.
Well I'm glad to see someone else that thinks this way. I feel that anime was starting to get this crowd during the early part of the 2000's but things like the western market crash and late night anime just deciding to really push the moe and light novel stuff from the second half of the 2000's on seems to have slowly scared off a lot of the more average everyday folk who may not necessarily want to have to learn the ins and outs of otaku culture in order to understand and get the most value of what they're watching. Again I just don't think the people that are fully hardcore into that sort of thing fully appreciate what it's like to not necessarily be into the big LN/VN titles that are getting pushed.
For me it's just one of their most inexcusably flat out incompetent since the last time Fukuda headed up a project as a producer. It's not all bad but man I really don't get the sense he or Nerima Studio are trying all that much with it.
The industry is currently just choosing from whatever the best selling LN/VN's are rather than what is best suited for or ready for TV and relying on the install base to make up the profit margin. I feel that's how we're ending up with stuff like Mahouka for example which IMO is just too dialogue and exposition heavy to really make for compelling television, but it's a best seller so that's what they pick. Also when it comes to VN's outside of Fate they just don't seem to want to pick any of the more interesting ones. I mean some people love KEY and we're apparently getting more of that but I just kind of don't so even something like that while it's huge for others isn't so much for me. I'd totally be down for a Mahou Tsukai adaptation, G Senjou no Maou or even Muv-Luv Alternative if given that big budget treatment the bigger VN titles seem to be getting but nobody seems to want to do them so....
Urghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :(
G-Reco is like Gundam AGE, made to attract new people into gundam especially young people and only the filthy elitists and alzheimic dinosaurs complain about them, G reco is pretty good but of course the bais prevents them too admit it.
And other gundams series with more mature content is being made along with these new ones, but let's ignore that right?
I guess that's...one way to put it....I think you're onto something but like are you trying to rile people up or something?
I would have to disagree. Cross Ange could be fine, but it's choosing to go the lowest common denominator route with how it chooses to depict it's story and characters and insists on humiliation and fan service in place of character development and I'm not at all convinced that it's going to come together much as a result of how it refuses to take anything remotely seriously. The art quality control is abysmal, especially for a Sunrise anime and no I don't want masterpiece level writing or "fate stay level of animation" (Honestly I don't even find that show to be the absolute be all end all art and animation style so I'd appreciate people not making that assumption) but it's below even serviceable levels IMO and again especially for Sunrise.
So basically your whole baiting confrontational shtick and trying to use the most inflammatory language and framing conceivably possible in this situation doesn't really hold much water so much as you are making these wild assumptions that I think and look at things exactly the same as your average MALer or "real fans" as you seem to be implying. Cross Ange and the other anime are perfectly fine, if you want masterpiece level writing and fate stay level of animation in every anime your f*cking stupid, just go watch reality TV and leave anime to the real fans.
And art style is not animation btw

Not much is selling decently, this season is a complete failure in the sales department and just as bad as Winter. I'm glad Cross Ange is selling though, but G Reconstituted shit should not be selling 20k, it's dreadful made worse by Tomino acting unprofessional, you don't talk down to your fanbase no matter how famous you are, keep it to yourself. Gundam is in decline when it comes to the anime, you may want to stay away from any future series that's not UC, my recommendation is to stick with the games, from what I seen, Gundam Breaker 2 looks excellent and has some kickass new features.
IMO you have it backwards, it's the fanbase that's actually the one in decline. Then again I think a lot of the points Tomino have actually have merit even if I don't agree 100% with him and I never felt he was talking down to his fanbase so much as saying how he sees the current state of popular culture and what people are spending their time on. It's the anime fanbases inability to self-reflect and insistence on burying itself in supporting and championing things that really just flatter them and their limited world view more than anything else that are the biggest crises facing anime and why so many shows are so crappy and kind of pointless now.
And if anything Cross Ange is one of the worst works Sunrise has ever put out in so many ways from themes, to scripting to characterization and just bad art. I don't understand anime fandoms current hatred of and rejection of shows like G-Reco other than it just so happens to present a set of themes and ideas based in current Japanese politics that they can neither understand nor want to take any interest in because it has nothing to do with typical otaku themed stuff that comprises the vast majority of current late night anime which I will say I think you are correct in saying is just doing horribly for a Fall season and IMO justifiably so. This is a pretty damn tepid fall season if not year for anime that has shown me just how badly the medium has stagnated and become reliant on advertising and big brand names to keep itself propped up as being even so much as a relevant sub culture. The same old standby's will do okay at best but everything else is pretty much doomed as per usual.
And anyway I definitely agree at least that video games are doing a hell of a lot better than anime, but not because any particular franchise is in decline, there's just a whole lot more going on of interest. If anything is in decline it's the anime industry and the effort level it's willing to put into actually creating new and fresh content, but that's not entirely it's fault so much as any time it makes any attempt at it it's pretty much guaranteed to blow up in investors faces. The 80's and 90's were a good era for experimentation with anime and getting new ideas out there with an audience that was starting to become more open minded but monopolies and an ever shrinking audience of non-hardcore otaku types who will even bother to take an interest in anime have seen the industry turn to Light Novels, Visual Novels and a handful of popular staffers that seem to have the eyes and ears of the hardcore otaku audience to even have a hope in hell at accomplishing much of anything. Meanwhile you have games like Bravely Default and Dark Souls 2 that just about anyone from any walk of life can approach and enjoy despite being made by Japanese companies.
It's sad to see the casuals and normal fans go away for the hardcore crowd, the anime industry would be balanced and would make more money if there were more anime for casual fans along with anime meant for Otaku.
Cross Ange is so-so very hit or miss on the execution and the characters (I have a hard time liking a good number of the characters as they are batshit insane or bitches) but the worst anime from Sunrise, that's a stretch. Cross Ange suffered from the first 3 episodes being weaksauce overall and slow pickup of quality overall, also the rehashing ideas from Gundam Seed, it's like they were running out of ideas in parts. However it's nowhere near as bad as Valvrave, that show was abysmal compared to Cross Ange.
As for the industry turning to LNs and VNs, I find it disappointing myself but not because of the mediums themselves, but what they are adapting from those mediums. Finding something that isn't a harem, ecchi, some Otaku-orientated action LN (most likely with a ton of ecchi), or with little sister themes is almost impossible today from LNs and any variety is almost non-existent for VNs, they just adapt the most popular VN at the moment whither it's shit or not instead of the many good ones out there.

It ranked 5th for December 15 which is it's lowest yet while Frozen franked #1 again with it's insane longevity. I find it funny that EFP's Oricon rank seems to have been about 3rd place for the weekly average even though it's Amazon ranking has consistently been either #1 or #2 for about a week now. Maybe it just has an extremely heavy Amazon bias. Also it's taking off popularity wise with only 3 weeks to go to release seems to have caused it's initial sales estimate from Amazon to be overestimated since Stalker works by essentially just adding a flat rate of points to something which is less accurate the higher up in the amazon charts it goes. I think it's something like:
1st place (2800)
2nd place (1200)
3rd place (800)
or some such thing. Could be totally off about that though. Also I'm not sure but I wonder if maybe people are confusing stock issues with this special version of the disc that went up on Amazon a couple weeks ago that has an added poster and will ship on December 19th instead and is estimated at about 2,000 stalker points or so. I remember hearing Animate and some smaller retail stores were selling out on day 1 in any case, but if Amazon sold out I have yet to see any indication of it. I remember when it happened with Love Live volume 1 there was a special notice and apology about it shipping a bit later.
I did also heard from symbv that it was out of stock in a lot of places at storefront, but I would think that the majority of people would shift to buying off an internet retailer such as Amazon, since it actually in stock. Seems ridiculous they would wait it out, unless they don't have a credit card or something to order online, or they pre-ordered at storefront and haven't gotten they copy yet.
It would explain why it's been ranking so strongly on Amazon for a while now for sure. I mean usually when you get the stuff that ranks #1 for this long it's stuff that does like 50K+ week one like Love Live 2nd Season Vol 1 not stuff that does 28K first week. It's weird how the distributors said they'd estimated about 30K numbers shipped first week and how spot on that number was though. Also if anything I've heard the opposite of stock problems with Amazon and that people have reported ordering one copy and receiving as many as 12 by mistake. I wonder if those numbers count towards sales or not.

And EFP is sold out yet again on Amazon. Oh boy this just keeps getting better and better.
Apparently Yuuki Yuuna also sold out on Amazon, looking forward to next week's thread now.
G-Reco did the same thing but is back in stock already as were all the titles mentioned a day or so later. Must have been the Christmas rush
