According to Nikkei Newspaper May 30, Shougakukan will suspend the publication of the "Seinen" manga magazine Weekly Young Sunday. Main reason for the decision is the decrease of the readers due to the shift of their interests from magazines to the separate comic books. In 1995, the circulation of the magazine reached 680,000, but it dropped to 200,000 in recent years. Shougakukan will also stop publishing the "Josei" manga magazine Monthly Judy.
They are now considering the transfer of the ongoing popular series "Kurosagi", "Dr. Kotoh's Clinic", "TomeHane!", "Aoi Honoo" etc. to other magazines.

My God, did you see the numbers of Young Jump?! That's almost a 50% drop in sales from 1995 to 2005; from 2 million to little more than 1 million in just ten years!! I sure hope they don't go the way of Young Sunday, that would suck terribly!

Well, Yansan really didn't have much in it since Ichi the Killer ended. I guess it's to be expected.

It's spamming.

Without the magazines for the chapters to be serialized in, there won't be the collected volumes. With fewer magazines for series to run in, that means fewer tankoubon being released ;_; Unless they change the way they do things and mangaka start drawing stuff specifically to be released directly as tankoubon. Or they find other places to release individual chapters, such as mobile phones or websites.

Also there will be less chances for the young manga writers to make their debut.
But...I've never bought manga magazines. They take huge spaces and have only one or two titles I wanna read. I'm skeptical about the success of online manga magazine, but that may be an only choice for them to survive in this new environment.

That is a big drop of readers.
At least it's good they are making it better now ^^

Wow, that's a really big drop in numbers.

I was reading about this on Mainichi earlier today. (link

It's understandable, really. These magazines have always been rather shitty, full of all sorts of stuff when the average reader only wants one or two chapters from it. Better to just stick with volumes when they come out; more enjoyable that way.
