Did I just read dozens of light novel volumes just to be sure I understood this one? Yes.
Was it worth it? Depends on your expectations. This isn’t any sort of endgame or finale across the franchises, it’s just fun short crossover. And for being that, it’s nice. Not “worth reading books you don’t like just for this” fun, but “nice extra if you already like the author’s works” nice.
Good news is, you don’t *really* need to read literally all of the related works, as for lot of the characters you can get enough info to understand the story just from their introductions and context.
...
The only two you really need are To Aru Majutsu no Index, unsurprisingly, as the crossover is kinda from Kamijou’s point of view, ideally up to New Testament volume 10, and The Circumstances Leading to Waltraute's Marriage as the world of that novel is where this crossover is set in – luckily, it too is just one volume long.
Making the setting of the crossover the world Waltraute-san novel is interesting, as it’s one of the lesser know Kamachi’s works, but as it’s an interesting world with interesting characters and most importantly, curious take on the norse mythology, it works out. It is also thanks to this world setting that the characters across all the different franchises can canonically get together (although I’m not completely certain about the canonity of this story, it doesn’t contract any established canon).
The story is more or less what you’d expect from Kamachi’s work – a bit silly but hard-headed and resourceful protagonist (protagonists) in this case that just can’t help but to help someone in distress, breaking or twisting the existing system in their favour in the process. The comedy is there, the adventure is there, the excitement is there.
If you’ve already ready the other works by the author, by all means pick this up too. If you’ve already read Index, which is what I assume is the situation of most people reading this, go on, read through Waltraute-san and then read this one too.
