Synopsis

Two years have passed since the CCG's raid on Anteiku. Although the atmosphere in Tokyo has changed drastically due to the increased influence of the CCG, ghouls continue to pose a problem as they have begun taking caution, especially the terrorist organization Aogiri Tree, who acknowledge the CCG's growing threat to their existence.

The creation of a special team, known as the Quinx Squad, may provide the CCG with the push they need to exterminate Tokyo's unwanted residents. As humans who have undergone surgery in order to make use of the special abilities of ghouls, they participate in operations to eradicate the dangerous creatures. The leader of this group, Haise Sasaki, is a half-ghoul, half-human who has been trained by famed special class investigator, Kishou Arima. However, there's more to this young man than meets the eye, as unknown memories claw at his mind, slowly reminding him of the person he used to be.

I loved Tokyo Ghoul so I had high expectations for this sequel, and fortunately, for the most part, it lived up to them, though with some nuances.

The story introduces many new characters, and at first, the previous ones don't appear much, though they later return to play significant roles and are even explored in greater depth. For the most part, I found the new characters very interesting.

As for the plot, it remained very interesting and intriguing, with many exciting moments, great fights, and deeper exploration of various aspects of the first part of the story, as well as its dramatic and emotional weight.

Mixed Feelings

**Heavy SPOILERS below.

I absolutely love Tokyo Ghoul and I wanted to love :re just as much. And I did, up until the Clown Siege Arc i.e chapter 98. Starting from volume 10, the quality drop is spectacular and it keeps getting worse and worse and worse.

Where do I start? The one point that I don't see people bringing up while discussing the shortcomings of this sequel is the lack of death. It's bizarre how nobody, absolutely NOBODY among the main cast dies once the quality starts downgrading. Just how many times has Naki 'evaded' death? Hell even the Ape and Dog were brought back and ... for what? They were literally fodder for the 20th ward battle and were wrapped up nicely with a final cup of coffee but nah. They were alive allll this while and just, JUST for the sake of killing someone (because war, duh) they killed those two offscreen in the last arc. Tell me, who cried over those two? No-one. Infact, I instead chuckled a little.
You're telling me over the course of 6 volumes, when there was mostly heavy balant action (almost double fight scenes than the prequel manga), absolutely NOBODY, NOBODY relevant died? People like Ui or Suzuya Squad members were always in the front lines but every fucking time the enemy went on a spree, the fodder who were in the back are getting their heads flipped around but the ones in the front are unscathed? Why can't we kill off the Moustache Special Investigator or the Creepy Washu Gay dude or, if Ishida was taking his usual risks - someone like Uta? Why has nobody faced the consequences of their actions? Why do we have the legless lady Investigator alive just for some random hospital scenes? Also the gay clown dude didn't die either. Neither did Itori. If you reallllly think about it, the only person Kaneki lost in real-time throughout the story was Yoshimura, and although I don't think this damages Kaneki's character in any way but a few more deaths of his 'loved' ones would tie beautifully with his mental picture, especially when there are soooo many characters that we DON'T NEED. I can name around 10 characters that could easily be killed off and it won't affect the plot even a bit and another 10 characters who deserved to die as a consequence of their actions but instead were forgiven because they suddenly realised that 'oh I was wrong, sorry, mueh mueh :'('
The eye-patch Q is by far the most outrageous example of this. This horrendous character suddenly felt sad and was saved by power of friendship after everything she did because you know, I hAvE sAD paST.
On the contrary, look at my glorious king Furuta, just accepting that he's a crackhead and giving in.
So, the series suffers from this in the second half along with another major problem - everything is too convenient. How conveniently every relevant character who was supposed to not recover, has come back to life, because of, erm, new technology? And while I don't particularly mind Ghoul Amon and Ghoul Takizawa, because their parts are among the only few ones I enjoyed in the later half of :re but I think we could do without, again, conveniently bringing every relevant character who was supposed to be dead, to life.
Tokyo Ghoul was supposed to be a tragedy and like I said, when it was this 'beautiful tragedy', I was in love with the series. And I'm all in for people forgiving each other and making peace but by the end, everyone is best friends with everyone else after a mere hug or a 'I also had a terrible life' or 'Look at these kids, they are orphans, soooo sad'. There should be atleast some tension even if the bad blood is supposedly gone. Forgiving each other and becoming all buddy buddy are different things especially when slaughtering of friends and families are in question.

Anyway, during the last 6 volumes, relevant characters from nemesis group show up conveniently to save the other group in danger. Everyone conveniently realises they were wrong just when the plot needs them too. 'Sorry I raped a corpse which I thought was Kaneki because I was sad :('
Character conflicts stopped existing. Every clash went like, 'I hate you' 'I hate you too'. Fight starts. One character is on the verge of defeat. what is life. Fight ends. Characters make up.
Like, the final page with Yomo and Uta was sweet but what led up to that point was random and rushed, not enough dialogue or development whatsoever.

The last Kagune-form of Kaneki also has no explanation. Previously, there was some sort of context as to why he has such-and-such form, even though most of this comes down to him being 'Kano's masterpiece', also his trauma being a trigger everytime for his grotesque release of kagune. But when he got wings out of nowhere, I couldn't help but cringe through my teeth coupled with 'This time I'll save everyone!!!' Yikes. We playing Naruto now?

Tokyo Ghoul started as a seinen while ending up as hot shounen garbage.

All this rant but I still rated it a 7. Because, for me, up until volume 10, the series was amazing. I don't mean it doesn't have flaws but the things TG does right (most of it) is just enough for me to love it. The thematic brilliance of Tokyo Ghoul is unparalleled and clearly overshadows the other aspects of the story. And while the characters are heavily psychodramatic and at times very 'edgy' like one would call it but in my opinion this factor plays into the mental confusion of the characters rather than acting against it. Kaneki is a very interesting character and what kept the story special was his psychological battles along with other really great characters such as Suzuya. And ofcourse, my glorious king, Furuta, who kept me reading through this crashing storyline till the end. Also, bonus point to Furuta for being a part of Gintama cult.

While reading the last few volumes of Tokyo Ghoul:re, some moments were definitely 'classic Tokyo Ghoul' and made me tear up, because of how much I wished the story had remained exactly this way. Some of the notable ones being Kaneki's monologues after killing Rize and getting engulfed or the last moments between Amon and Donato, although I thought it was hilarious how a severed head kept talking for like 6 pages straight (lol).

Ishida had stated that he lost interest in Tokyo Ghoul somewhere along the way but wanted to wrap up the story anyway. This is sad and heartbreaking but I suppose it's the authors choice above all. I think this fact also can be strengthened when we look at the art in the last 2 volumes or so. While Tokyo Ghoul never had the best art, it was detailed enough for us to not get confused. The last few fights in :re however, are just black and white lines with blobs of ink in the disguise of fight scenes foregrounded over a page of my infant nephew's artbook.

So, long story short, I'm confused with whether I'd actually recommend this inspite of giving it a relatively high score. The things Tokyo Ghoul:re does good are too good and when it fails, it fails miserably. I love the characters that I love and I love the themes and everything but it really becomes hard to read after the Rushima Operation or, I'd like to say - 'The death of Arima was the death of Tokyo Ghoul'.

Tokyo Ghoul:re is one of those classic cases of wasted potential. A story that starts completely lost, like it forgot what it was — just like Kaneki himself, who literally loses his memory and identity. And from there, it all falls apart. Because if the main character doesn’t know who he is, the reader sure as hell won’t either. You spend half the story trying to figure out what the hell is going on, and by the time it starts making any sense, you’re already too tired to care.

The narrative is messy as hell — poorly tied together, full of abrupt cuts, characters showing up ...
