Synopsis

Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naive boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

Goodnight Punpun is ugly, suffocating, awkward, and often emotionally unbearable — and that’s exactly why it works. It doesn’t try to be clean, inspirational, or narratively satisfying. It drags you through insecurity, obsession, self-hatred, emotional dependency, and emptiness without offering comfort or redemption. Most manga feel like carefully engineered products.
Punpun feels like something that shouldn’t exist publicly — like reading someone’s private breakdown.
The characters are not likable. The pacing is not kind. The story doesn’t reward you. But it feels brutally honest in a way fiction almost never is. It’s not trying to manipulate your emotions with clean arcs — it’s exposing raw ones and ...

Mixed Feelings
I started this manga back in senior year of high school and stopped around volume 8. I wasn't sure why until I finished this manga today, it's most likely because I wasn't ready for it, hell I still wasn't. My mindset has been on a steady downfall (reference to my favorite Inio Asano manga) since graduating and I've steadily felt like I'm losing control on my own life. But I think this manga has made me realize I just need to live long enough to gain that control back.

This manga is truly unlike anything I've ever read, I've never not enjoyed something so much to ...

I am unable to express or describe this mass of ugliness. If you haven't read this manga, my advice is to stay away from it because it will destroy you just as it destroyed me.

Who would have imagined that my love for manga and stories in general would turn against me and bring me to this state?

The philosopher Émile Cioran said: "A true writer must stir up pain, even inflict it; a writer must pose a danger."

And that's exactly what Asano did; he put the reader in a difficult situation, put them in danger.

Personally, I empathized deeply with the characters, and this is one of ...
