Oyasumi Punpun is not a mecha manga. It's about a little boy growing up into a man and changing. It's very slice-of-life-ish and has heavy psychological themes. I always see a lot of NGE fans loving Shinji because he is imperfect, he is a mentally ill teenager and his mental illness affects his world and his realationships. If you are a fan that loves NGE because of the characters and not the plot then Oyasumi Punpun might be your next obsession. The feelings of the characters are so vividly and strong portrayed that I often needed to put the manga away to calm down. Please

Both portrait the human mind in a very organic and intense way, exploring depression, sexuality, suicide, love, illness and family issues, and both have a main character constantly trying to find a meaning in life and happines, only to find themselves deeper and deeper into despair and self-depreciation.
Don't let yourself get fooled by the fact that Oyasumi Punpun is a slice of life or the first rather "happy and goofy" chapters. If you loved Eva, you will love Punpun even more!
Both have some pretty messed up kids who go through their own personal issues whether its at home or psychologically and the mc in particular is a kid who goes through a lot of shit in the main story eventually changing him as time goes by due to the amount of shit that gets thrown at him and his friends.
