How exotic of a meat have you eaten?

have you ever eaten meat that wasn't beef, pork, chicken or fish? Have you had lamb or duck, which is considered more gourmet? Or something even more out there like Venison? Or how about horse meat? I saw on Hells Kitchen, they had someone eating Kangaroo. The scale below refers to how pricey and out there the meat is. Like most fast food restaurants have beef/fish/chicken and Pork is very common as well Duck and Lamb are mostly seen in fancy gourtmet places And then the last option is stuff that people only eat if they're the ones breeding the animals or catching them themselves. Like Deer, Squirrel, OPossum, etc.). You can't just go into Publix and buy a horse burger. As for the bottom option, that's mostly there as a joke unless there's some real hannibal lecter's on Mal |

When I went to Yellowstone in 2018, I had a bison burger. Yes, made out of bison meat. It was a...very interesting experience. I can't fully remember but I think I also had an ostrich burger in that same vacation. |

Just duck and bison. The bison was good, but otherwise not noteworthy. Duck is definitely a treat, though. EDIT: Oh yeah! VVVV I also tried swordfish some time back. It was... kinda gross. It was still the best seafood I've ever had, though I'd still eat literal trash instead. Shit tasted like rotten pork, and was so overly tender it was sickening. (I'm not a seafood guy, if it's not clear) |

Red deer, swordfish, moose, and boar are probably the most exotic animals that I've eaten |

Venison is among my favourite meats, and as an Asian person whose mother goes to the local Chinese grocer, an eater of roasted duck too. |

I had both Duck and lamb, both were a treat, I also ate pigeon a few times. Camel is very common where I live, so I had plenty of it. Oh chevon/mutton too, that was a real treat. With fish, maybe the most 'exotic' is Mackerel. |

I've eaten frog legs a few times, I once ate deer (wild game meat from my uncle’s hunting), and there was that one time I ate wild boar at a restaurant. But I'm not big on meat and don't actively seek to eat anything too fancy. |

Venison isn't "really out there" unless you live in a major city or possibly outside of North America where they don't have as big of a hunting culture. The most exotic I've had was alligator meat, years ago. |

@Rally- Yeah it sucks. It's so underappreciated and sadly it's so overpriced to buy in stores here that going to a Turkish/Greek or Levantine restaurant and buying it there as a meal is cheaper |

Idk probably kangaroo. Not a big fan, to be honest. It's very gamy (I hate the smell and taste of it). Very rich and iron-y too. I'm happy with just beef. |

The most exotic meat i ate was probably lamb (boring, i know) But i've heard stories that homeless junkies in my country eat dogs. I mean, they catch stray dogs and roast them over a fire and eat them... But i dont know if this are just rumors or not. |

I went with “slightly exotic” in the poll. Exotic meats I’ve had: Rattlesnake (rattlesnake sausage from a place called Wurstküche) Rabbit Goose (is this considered exotic? not entirely sure) Frogs (only the cooked frog legs) Escargot Saltwater eels I’ve had lamb and duck meat many times as well, but I personally don’t consider them to be exotic meats per se. Duck meat is something I’ve had like countless of times. It is quite tasty. What exotic meats I would like to try one day: Bison Boar Pheasant |

@traed To be honest, when I was climbing there last time, there were more lambs. I suppose they have grown up and gone to school. Or maybe even gotten jobs - there is a little village diner nearby. I just hope their old man was wise enough not to let them go off to the city, where it's full of sexual predators and perverts' websites. |

Lamb is probably the most exotic, although it's a reasonably common meat over here. I know I used like it when I was younger, but I guess my tastes must have changed as I got older, as I find it really gross now. I can eat it as mince in a Bolognese, but not any other way. Ah maybe I have had goose before too? but I really don't remember? |

traed said: Is it slimy? I’ve had it just once at a restaurant many years ago, and if my memory is correct, I think the texture was kind of firm and chewy, similar to abalone. Fortunately I didn’t get any slimy texture feel from it lol. traed said: There is some Asian place that has eel so I have been wondering what that tastes like. Yeah, anago is the only type of saltwater eel that I’ve had, and I personally quite like them. There are very thin bones inside, and so you would have to be more careful if you want to try eating them. They seem like one of those “love it or hate it” type of foods though lol. As for the taste, I’m not exactly sure I have the right words to describe anago. The texture is kind of firm and the taste is like a fish taste. They also taste quite unique compared to most other fish types I’ve had in the past. |

In Crete we eat a lot of lamb (delicious), goat (it's ok) and snails (had them once they tasted ok, kinda like pork for some reason). I have tried venison, duck, goose and boar. The most exotic to me was probably roe deer (which tasted amazing btw) and horse. When I visited giethoorn in the Netherlands I had some meatballs that contained horse meat (my friend ordered them who used to live in the Netherlands and he only told me after I had a few). |

@Pitsilizater Where in Crete are you from? Ierapetra has almost been like another home to me, I love going on vacations there. Chania and Heraklion are nice too but nothing beats Ierapetra. I've noticed that people are getting increasingly tired of tourists and that if you don't already know people living there you probably wont be happy as a tourist which makes sense because you hear a lot of awful stories about tourists sadly |

@NS2D I live in Heraklion. I am not involved with tourism at all so I wouldn't know tbh. Personally, I don't mind tourists. @Pitsilizater I got a family member who used to live and work there over a summer and learned a bit of the language and got to know a community of people, and they're all really old now since it was a long time ago. I haven't spent much time in Heraklion or the northern towns like Hersonissos so I can't say much about them aside from the fact that Crete in general is one of my favorite places in the world |

There is nothing exotic about dead animal body parts. How is the West's definition of edible meat any different from that of the Middle East's which forbids pork consumption? Is the last joke answer supposed to represent the main question being a joke in itself? All animal consumption is a joke answer, and if you consume meat you should really rethink your life choices. |

Chicken is like the most default neutral taste so that just means it has no taste or texture so surely there are spices and marinades at work right? I've never spoken with a real frogeater before. My old man is a hunter, so I had plenty of venison growing up. I've tried caviar (gross), escargot (idr), and duck (delicious) once. A couple of bison burgers, which were good. @NS2D I’d say it’s pretty close to chicken wings in taste, but with maybe a tiny hint of fish (it really isn’t strong, though). As for the texture, it kinda feels like chicken wings too... (goshdarnit, you’re genuinely asking me these questions and all I have are these boring answers 😭) But I already have a plan next weekend to go to the very same restaurant where I ate frog legs before, maybe I can try to analyze it more. 🙃 |

Not a lot of opportunities to eat "exotic meat" in my small town, but I've tried rabbit, snails baked into breads, and cow stomach and tongue. I guess they aren't "exotic meats" but where I'm from we don't tend to eat them, so I think it counts. "Exotic" is subjective anyways. |

French person speaking here: Things I've eaten and that I really, really don't consider exotic: Beef Calf Chicken Pigeon Duck Pheasant (honestly I'm not going to list every kind of bird I've eaten, it'd be long and I'd forget half of it anyway) Rabbit Pork Boar Deer Sheep Lamb Snails Things I've eaten that I consider slightly exotic: Frogs (We don't really eat frogs anymore, you can ditch that cliché. And we only eat the legs) Crickets Bison I also tend to like most offals, especially the liver, the heart, kidneys, gizzard, beef cheeks and tongue, pig or sheep feet (😏), and intestines (especially andouillette which is basically a tripe sausage, and blood sausage). Miss me with lungs and brain, don't want to eat that shit. About frogs: We only eat the legs. It does taste like chicken. About snails: It's not slimy, it's chewy. Kinda tasteless, we usually cook them with garlic and butter which makes them delicious. And here, you have it. I think you know now why we frenchies have a reputation for eating anything and putting lots of efforts in our cuisine. It's not culturally accepted here, but if it was I'd eat rat, cat and dog without a second thought. And since I work in vineyards, orchards, etc, I often meet people from Europe, North Africa, etc. You should see their faces when you cook an andouillette, and the delicious perfume of intestines starts filling the place lmao. Those who are brave enough to take a bite usually admit that it's really fucking good, too. They're also very surprised by the fact we talk about food ALL THE TIME. We talk about food during work, we talk about food during meals, we talk about food when we party. Give me an italian coworker, I'll talk about wine and cheese all day long. Give me a german coworker, I'll talk about beer and sausage all day long. Give me a moroccan coworker, I'll talk about mint tea and couscous all day long. The thing is, I'm not extremely fond of eating frogs (again, it's a cliché anyway, gl finding frog legs) or snails for the same reason that I'm not fond of eating oysters or crickets. I just feel weird having to eat like, 30 dead animals in a single meal. I know it's stupid because eating snails is way more ecologically viable than eating beef, but that's how it is. @fleurbleue @NS2D |

Frogs (We don't really eat frogs anymore, you can ditch that cliché. And we only eat the legs)

Sounds like something a frog eater would say!

I ate frog legs maybe twice or thrice, two decades ago minimum. As I said, it's really not common. It wasn't bland, and we probably marinated them, or made a sauce for them. Can't remember. There's a reason why I put them in the exotic category: we don't eat frogs. Sorry (^: |
