@Cnon ye multiplayer games today use kernel level anticheat and linux bans anything that affects their kernel because look at how crowdstrike of microsoft windows become a disaster

but ye singleplayer games are great in linux it even has better fps than windows because of less bloatware

Might put Linux on old devices (laptop, old PC, etc). It should be fine on those kinda looking forward to it.

Main PC tho def I will just buy Windows 11 or w/e is current. It's never worth the trouble of Linux on your main device. There's a point where inconvenience is just worth paying through. I had the option to take a bus/train to the Chicago airport once for near nothing but it would take 3 hours at night and take an unfamiliar route, OR I could have taken an Uber for $20, I took the Uber. Not worth the long wait and unfamiliar route lol. If it was everyday for sure I'd familiarize with the train route, since the cost wouldn't be worth the convenience anymore. (Well, at a three hour trip, maybe it still would be worth the uber everyday!? haha)

The ways Linuxers claim to run anything Windows on Linux are very inconvenient and time-consuming. An ongoing thing for like 20 years now. They say its fast and simple, but prove over and over it is NOT. In person, I've seen it lead to massive embarrassments and delays on their part. EVERY TIME lol. I saw it once cost a company thousands and many hours of labor. Most disingenuous group ever lmao. If they were honest about it they would have more credibility. Basic aps like browsers would be OK for Linux on your main PC, but not the big stuff.

If you are a PC gamer or use Windows aps seriously, imo it's worth forking over the cash to avoid all that trouble. Or maybe go Apple, obviously that works too. If you're a gamer you already have the money for games and a card so you have the money for Windows every few years. You probably already pirate some games or order pizza. Update fucking Windows lol.

Switched to Arch Linux years ago from Windows and will never go back to using Windows daily. I do still have a drive with Windows for the occasional game that isn't playable on Linux.

Windows 8.1 was still new when I jumped the Microsoft ship for good. I genuinely have never interacted with Windows 11, and only just barely know my way around Windows 10 for the sake of helping family.

Though sadgely, this means I'm more familiar with the Win8 charms bar than I am with modern Windows.

EDIT: No joke, writing this post caused my muscle memory on how to use the stupid charms bar to flood back. This is a fate I never expected to suffer.

as they say linux is only free if you don't value your time. i wish it wasn't the case some distros make it easier like pop os but it is still linux and it is made by a bunch of people not by a
company developer so anything can happen code is not double checked and there could be bugs, exploits etc.

I haven't found any usefulness in using the Microsoft Windows updates feature in any Windows since Windows '97. (it was always stayed and keeps staying >Off/Disabled)

So, I'm good with my custom Windows 10.

Besides, I only use old programs and software and play old or pre-2015 games only.

====================================================
Linux is a complete shit, it cannot run old cracked Photoshop(s) and Clip Studio(s), can't even handle original Xbox and Xbox 360 emulators, PC gaming and File management on Linux is ass in general.

I tried Ubuntu and 20.04 was good but 22.04 was terrible. I've been burned out on trying linux ever since. I don't have the patience to troubleshoot a system with completely different file structure.

I still have a working Windows 7 drive (though my Windows 10 LTSC drive is my daily driver) so using older Windows isn't an issue for me. And yes, I access the internet with it. I've not had any issues, people are too overly paranoid about that sort of thing.

I am using Linux since 2015, for gaming i have two virtual machines (gpu pass-through and all that jazz) one with w7 and one with w11, i may add one with w11 if i want to play any new games.

With today's virtualization technology even my 80 year old mother can watch 2 videos and create a gaming VM without surrendering all our family's history to MS.

Of course most Steam games can be played in Linux under Proton and they often play better but i like to use external programs like the speedhack of cheat engine plus i am too lazy and save state before shutting down lol.

Ubuntu is shit, Mint is way better and Debian is better than both if you don't care about cutting edge software.

The best you and anyone can do is get on the app policy and restrict .bin .bat .exe .zip etc files from running through appdata and more specifically the roaming folder. Noscript will protect your browser if you are visiting "strange" sites.

@KenaiPhoenix I think he is talking about unnofficial support and anti cheat. Support for Open gl is not as good as Vulkan's, in a direct X to Vulkan. This includes proton and consequently steam play. So some people on lower end pcs, can feel a hit when trying to play some games in linux coming from windows.

And unfortunately, those pcs are most probably the ones that are forced out of w11.

People saying Ubuntu also means people aren't trying the lightweight and easier to use distro/desktop environments, like Matte and Xfce.

The anti-cheat are a way more localized problem, CoD, BF 2044, Valorant, Apex, LoL... and mostly those big names. And many of those anti cheats are suspicious at best, I personally wouldnt let them install a kernel level anticheat on my PC. There is a whole ocean of online games that runs perfectly on Linux, and my hardware is like 5-6 years old components and I almost have no issues. I even compare to my brother PC that has the similar specs, play similar games and were build at the same time, and the results are the same.

Claiming that Linux desktop is a meme and that most games are unplayable/blocked is just a lie claimed by people that probably never touched the SO but for some reason wants to talk about something they dont know.

Yes, it is misinformation and lies, you painted like is it "single players or nothing" and thats not true:
- Battlefield 4
-Age Of Empires 4
- Arma 3
- CS2
- Eve Online
- Ready Or Not
- MechWarrior Online
- Any Half-Life game
- Star Citizen
- Squad
- Halo MCC
- Ace Combat 7
- Armored core 6
- Elden Ring
- Baldurs Gate 3
- Final fantasy XIV
- Guild Wars 2
- War Thunder
- Guilty Gear Strive
- Hell Let Loose
- Helldivers 2

All of those with online, and Im only mentioning the ones I have. So painting it like "Oh... it is impossible and no support of any online play in linux" is a lie.

Cnon said:

sudo pacman -Syu

Thats literally everything you need to do to keep wine and most proton update. And it you have Steam is even easier: it gets already or just put "experimental" and call it a day.

Cnon said:

I have to do that only once, and was with DCS that is a chore to play because of how complex it is (the gameplay). For everything else is just Proton or Proton GE and call it a day.

Linux is really not that hard, and again, I choose Arch because I hate myself, other distros like Mint are way easier.

You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Some people claim FreeBSD performs better with games than Linux. This kind of kind of makes sense since many consoles are built on FreeBSD as their base of their OS. However FreeBSD uses a Linux compatibility layer for anything meant for Linux so maybe this only is the case when it is console emulation involved. I haven't looked deep into it yet how accurate this is.

NixOS and GoboLinux might suit you better since their filesystem hierarchy goes against normal Linux standards. Well setting aside usual Linux distro issues.

It isn't too a big deal if you either use ethernet or if on WiFi you turn off IPv6. Also everyone should set their browser to ask download location so you never have files download without your permission.

On my main PC I run Windows 11 already.
With "Open-Shell" the start menu / desktop / file explorer behaves like I am used to in everyday use.

I tried Linux Mint on my laptop.
It is fine, but it starts to get a hassle trying to find replacements for all the little things I found over the course of a decade that mostly only run on Windows.
Like lots of tools from Nirsoft and such.

Or that little mkv default subs changer? Windows only.

Of course I could start tinkering with Wine and try to get it to run...
But I am not annoyed enough by Windows yet to do so.
Also time gets more sparse every day in adult life...
Nowadays I am more and more happy if things just work and I don't have to tinker with them (despite how much I loved to do that in the past).

Linux is open-source, anyone can double check the code and submit patches if they found a bug. This makes it possible for them to deliver "safer" version of the kernel earlier than its proprietary counterparts.

I agree with this one. People should stop teaching everyone false information. Your "unsupported" Windows OS ain't gonna be hacked simply just by accessing the internet. If everything works just fine, you really only need to update your OS if your current version has a known critical vulnerability.

I never said it was. I said it has a Linux compatibility layer to run same programs Linux does when it isn't a program written specifically for BSD systems like how you use Wine to run Windows programs but does that more consistently. I am not sure why FreeBSD is the base of so many consoles, maybe since OpenBSD is more server focused. Likewise MacOS also uses FreeBSD code somewhere in it.

Using Windows for illegal activities is probably a bad idea. I am not talking about serious crimes. Like cp or carding. Which you shouldn't be doing. Even for minor crimes (like anime piracy), you will be a fool to use Windows. Especially using Windows 11. Windows 11 has next-to-no privacy. The NSA can see everything you are doing on it.

Windows 11 is crap. It is obvious spyware. And it has hardly any useful features. Why would anyone want to use it? Unless you are forced to use it, don't use it. Even an Android smartphone is safer and less buggy than Windows 11. In fact, Android is far superior to Windows 11.

I only switch over to Linux when my computers become too old to even handle Windows's file explorer.

Windows is low-quality spyware. Your computer is already completely compromised using Windows.

i sincerely doubt droves of people just switch to linux lmao. linux desktop is a meme and it will stay a meme. most games actively block linux btw you should be fine if you play singleplayer games though.
@Cnon I think that SteamOS might be a great contender for gamers who don't want to deal with Window 11's BS. But I agree with you linux is not very intuitive + poor anti-cheat compatibility

As a side note, there are plenty of dumb asses who are downloading and watching real child pornography on Windows 11. Windows 11 which literally spies on everything they do on their computer. Yet they are watching illegal content on software that can easily be detected by the fbi. It is obvious they are going to end up in jail. If they had an iota of common sense, they wouldn't dare watch that kind of stuff on Windows 11. They should be using Linux instead. Of course, they shouldn't be watching that kind of content, even if they are using Linux. At worst, you should watch some pirated anime content on Linux. I wouldn't recommend any sort of illegal activities on Windows 11 because the Feds can literally see everything you are doing on Windows 11. I don't condone nor endorse people looking at cp.....at worst, they should watch some pirated anime.

They don't have to. There is various distros for gaming like ChimeraOS, Nobara and SteamFork and for retro gaming emulation focus ones too like Lakka
@traed I think the main problem is the barrier to entry when it comes to Linux and it doesn't matter how many "easy to learn" distros that come out. Now if a huge and trusted company like Valve released an OS that could work as a proper replacement for Windows then that would be a whole different thing

Anyone, engaging in serious criminal activities online, would not use Windows 11. They would be using Linux instead. Windows 11 spies on all your computer activities. Linux does not. No intelligent hacker or pedophile would use Windows 11 for illegal activities.

So painting it like "Oh... it is impossible and no support of any online play in linux" is a lie.

but keeping up with latest wine/proton update and patches is pain. you need to manage components with winetricks as well at some point people just give up. devs need to change and support linux on release!

sudo pacman -Syu

Thats literally everything you need to do to keep wine and most proton update. And it you have Steam is even easier: it gets already or just put "experimental" and call it a day.

I have to do that only once, and was with DCS that is a chore to play because of how complex it is (the gameplay). For everything else is just Proton or Proton GE and call it a day.

Linux is really not that hard, and again, I choose Arch because I hate myself, other distros like Mint are way easier.
@KenaiPhoenix I love linux but I think the main issue for most people is having to use the terminal, so many people are scared shitless of opening the terminal. Also Vr support isn't there sadly...

let me tell you why would anyone install linux at this point they have an e-waste laptop with a single core cpu something like amd e-240 and it can't run windows 10 or 11 so cpu gets pegged at 100% so windows is not an option what would you do? you install antix linux on that thing and even then that thing is unusable ewaste but you can use it to rip cd/dvds that's the only thing going for that laptop. so yeah linux is great for lowend ewaste pcs other than that you should NOT use linux because nvidia drivers also suck on linux no gpu vendor will ever prioritize linux ever full stop. so if you are a serious gamer you install windows that's it. if you don't care about latest and greatest games or are okay with visual glitches etc then be my guest and install linux. most of those linux gaming videos you see on youtube are touch and go they might work today and not work a few months later because wine was updated there is a reason they maintain a regression list afterall.

Windows 11 is terrible software. Every new version of Windows has fewer useful features. And more adware and more spyware. You are a cuck for using Windows 11. Windows 11 is blatant spyware. You are crazy to think otherwise. Microsoft isn't even hiding the fact that Win 11 is spyware.

I tried Windows 11 recently, and to make me comfortable (I like taskbar docked to the left, because I value vertical space) it took few hacky utilities that basically remove win11 taskbar and replace it with buggy version of win10 taskbar. It felt inferior to just using win10 at that point. Now I'm using Bazzite and I'm quite satisfied with it. It took few days to get things work right and to customize visuals to my liking, so it's not always "just install it and it works" (for some people it is, just not for everyone).

I'm completely serious about not playing modern AAA slop. While my indies and old games and modded games do work well. Actually some of that FOMO/FOTM/AAA stuff also works well, but some of it is reported to have 5-15% performance loss compared to Windows. Some games perform significantly better on Linux.

My notebook works perfectly fine, but doesn't support windows 11 so I already changed to linux. In the future I'll probably get windows again on a new computer, but for now I'm perfectly fine with linux.
