Asuka Langley: An Essay on the Greatest Tsundere
By NorthmostIsle

Asuka Langley is one of the single greatest characters ever created. To say otherwise would be the understatement of the millennium as no other Character has resonated with more people nor had the influence that she has.

Her cultural impact cannot be overstated. Asuka can be credited with single handedly changing the course of the medium of Anime as we know it. It is nigh impossible to find a Top Tsundere list without Asuka at or near the top. This is because Asuka Langley and the Tsundere archetype are inseparable. This is because she has been credited with the creation of the Archetype itself (1). True, she is not the first tsundere as that honor is mostly commonly attributed to Lum Invader from the original Urusei Yatsura back in the 1980s (2). But Asuka was the first character to cement the Idea of a Tsundere within the Medium of Anime while Lum is more of a retroactive labeling.

Neon Genesis’s creation within the mid 90s directly coincided with Anime itself going mainstream in the western world (3,4). As a result, Neon Genesis is one of the earliest exposures to the medium that people have had. As a result, the Rei v Asuka rivalry is widely considered to be the first of the “Waifu Wars”. There is little evidence that Hideaki Anno deliberately planned this, and it seems a total accident given the numerous production issues that Evangelion faced in its production (5). But the “Eva Girls'' and their Waifu status is one of the primary drivers of the success of the NGE franchise. Rin Tohsaka, Taiga Aisaka, Maikse Kurisu, would any of these characters have existed without Asuka Langley? It is difficult to say without diving into pure speculation. However, it is seriously doubtful that subsequent Mangaka, Light novel authors, and Animation Studios have failed to notice the financial success that Asuka and her Tsundere archetype have reaped.

But what is it about Asuka that made her so successful? One might point to the obvious. Asuka is a badass child prodigy. She’s highly skilled in her job, and exercises the drive and determination befitting an elite soldier. But it is not for these reasons that her fans seem to gravitate towards her. Rather it is for the exact opposite reason, it is because beneath her successes and triumphs she is ultimately a loser (6).

A Tsundere is a character that swaps dramatically between hot and cold, love and hate, Praise and ridicule, and there is no one that this dynamic is most apparent in than in her relationship towards herself. Throughout the series, Asuka wildly shifts from hymns of self praise and appreciation to self deprecation and loathing. Her struggle to come to terms with accepting herself is the key conflict of her arc and it is for this reason that she has gained such success. While few can relate to the prestige of being an elite, many can relate to the feelings of insecurity, self hatred, and Identity issues that Asuka’s character and the Tsundere archetype itself best represents. Asuka shows that the most important person to love is also the most difficult, that person being yourself.
