the last standalone movie that made waves was Josee, the Tiger and the Fish -
movies feel like a lost art in anime industry right now, we used to be a proper nation with movies with plot and mainstream hype now ...so barren ???

movies are supposedly easier to consume then how come we don't get them more often or how come people don't talk about the one which actually get released ??!!!

baby, you're the devil i know

On top of those already mentioned, my favorite of the last few years:

Blue Giant (2023) - Immersively nails the spirit of making music by contrasting the mono no aware feeling inherent to Jazz with the energy of solos. Beyond a solid "let's form a band" story, the movie shines at emotional, surreal visualization of ecstatic live performances. (8/10)

I enjoyed The Deer King far more than Uehashi's TV anime.

I still go to see anime movies at our theaters when available, but usually yeah there are based off of an existing series. I would imagine that covid was to blame, though I do hope they make a triumphant return someday especially outside of Japan in theaters.

My guess is money. You get more ad revenue from 13 episodes of commercials

I miss movies, the only movies it seems like we get are spinoff movies of long running series.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

As many have listed, there have been many excellent anime movies in the past 5 years.

I guess it feels "barren" if we're talking about massive hits on the level of Your Name or A Silent Voice. I think The Boy and the Heron and Suzume did alright in the box office, but I don't think they threw people into a frenzy, exactly...

What I'd like to know is whether there was a time when standalone anime movies were way more common and consistently popular...

I'm sure they did better than Tiger & Fish.

You seem to have a misconception, there were never many original anime movies to begin with. In fact there are far more movie project in recent decades compared to the past century.

Studios are focusing more on expanding Intellectual Properties and not stopping at one-offs.
Ganbatte Ikimasshoi has had multiple adaptations, including a live-action film in 1998 and a television drama in 2005 but I will say it's a standalone anime movie, because the 2024 anime film is a self-contained adaptation of the original novel, a lot different from the live-action versions
