In what is definitely the show's biggest plot twist so far (even with the OP spoilers making a lot of sense now), Asahi's life gets rocked when he sees that the world is not what it seems.

Meeting the researcher Dr. Yoshino Feynman (acting as his virtual good friend Yoshio Ijuin) and learning of the AOI (Artificial Omniscient Intelligence) Cavendish project which he applied and was selected for randomly with the tools provided, every inch of Asahi's memories is reproduced in a VR enironment, with the girls being AIs. This is for sure, some SAO shitz, with AI leading the world through human emotion, and more specifically for Asahi, in the area of romantic interests, which resulted in the 5 girls which appeared in his life for months in the virtual world, even though it lasted only a day in the real world.

This and all, throws Asahi to a fit of rage and shock as they were booted out of the virtual world, and trying to grasp this in the context of AIs becoming more human to the point of trespassing over data and technology, this brain simulation technology went mainstream, and that includes the 5 simulation AI girls themselves. The progenitor of this mind-uploading technology? Someone named Kotaro Izawa, who had a daughter named Ai who died due to an illness, and you can't tell me that the boy living alongside her is for all coincidences, Asahi himself. Ah yes, the childhood friend trope strikes again, and the ED makes this clear.

As much as this episode is depressing, this show has begun to be interesting from here on despite the tropes, NGL.
Will Aoi start to shatter this experiment being the DDLC character she's been hiding all along?

Well, I think we should consider those 7 episodes a prologue.
It's nice to know, that this incredibly generic trash we have seen so far was deliberate and self aware.
But this is where pleasantries end, because from now on it seems we gonna have pure misery. It's hard to imagine a happy ending now unless Asahi somehow mqnqges to somehow cope with the truth.
This situation must have caused Asahi a huge distress. Finding out, that people he forged a bond with and deeply cared about never even really existed must be really hurtful. Reminds me of that Red Lamp story.

Straight up "Bad End", wow.

- Asahi lost his childhood friend
- became a recluse
- signed up for the experiment to escape everything
- comes to the realization that his new-found friends are not even real after losing his memory

You don't get a good end after all this, it's gonna be either bittersweet (Asahi coming to terms with his life after all the sadness and heartbreak) or just straight up depressing (Asahi willing to escape the world and become permanently trapped in the VR world to be with the gang)

I suspect it's AI becoming self aware (which was literally everything this episode was about) and will try to reach Asahi in real life, because they developed actual feelings.

I also thought like that as well. Ai is the one behind the incident and she tried to reach Asahi, somehow. My guess is she will try to throw out some chaos to the real world in the next episode while trying to contact Asahi.

This was such a lovely but bittersweet episode, the ending song would also make you cry after this episode. There's so much information given like it was summarized mostly completely but it was wonderfully made that I have no qualms about it.

Tragic ending but he still has that girl who knows him from his class, better ship them or tears will flow again... (ᗒᗩᗕ)
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I called it, that this was all VR but I don't feel good at all. The girls were AI? Well fuck. So Aoi was created from Asahi's childhood friend and most likely the other four AIs are also created from girls Asahi knows since there was all the flashbacks. Fuck my harem end this won't even have any sort of good ending. Unless they bring back the girls to life or something.

You sure you were properly watching the episode? 'Cause it was explained that the girls had no relation to Asahi and were just creations of scientists from different countries. Those memories were most likely planted by Ai AI who has decided to interfere with the experiment.

This episode was really good. I don’t like the whole “you were in a simulation” thing though. It just removes all the really good character development they had. Why did they make already fictional girls, fictional?

I really liked the ending though. Pretty decent episode and I did like the plot twists. Hopefully we see the girls again…

Still think they took too long with the reveal...and now a whole episode of scarred passive amnesiac mc (worst trope) + new exposition dump (also bad thing to do). And yey despite the exposition dump they still don't explain why he seems to have amnesia or something? I mean, rejecting reality is one thing, but going in for an experiment, having a realistic long dream and then waking up insane is...
Did the newtwch fry part of his brain sao style..?

I like that they're trying something original but so far the execution is kind of lacking, the only really special and well made part was the second half of ep7

You two need to watch the episode again lol, Yoshino said that ALL the human-like AIs are created from the same AI the doctor (Ai's father) created 3 years ago (by copying his dying daughter's/Asahi's childhood friend's brain). The designs were created from people from different countries, but all the girls have memories from their childhood with Asashi because they're all based on Ai Izawa.

Ai's father scanned her brain prior her death and it served as a template for all other AI, who were later customized. She was the first.

The anime will be 12 eps, and the manga is still in the Ilya/Irina episode (it just has more ecchi than the anime).

Now I wonder if the "Flops" part of the title has to do with processing power, like gigaflops. But in this instance, exactly as it says it's processing love hence "Renai Flops."

Well i expected this kinda twist, but i did not expect it to be THAT depressing. That ending... it looks like the Yandere AI is gonna make the whole world go to sheet. But not all hope is lost, because another heroine is introduced this episode (and this time it's a real person). I didn't catch her name, but that classmate of Asahi will most likely be crucial later on to save him from Aoi. But heey that's just a theory. It's also very possible that Asahi will accept Aoi and will live forever in a fake world. But that'd be really messed up so i don't want to consider that.

people who think that this plot twist coming out of nowhere clearly has short attention span and didn't paying attention while watching, it was being foreshadowed even from episode one, the glitching on the alarm clock, Yoshio giving infodump on Asahi about all the girls in full details, not to mention throughout episode two to six, we have the girls weird flashback, the house being renovated in a blink of an eye and Yoshio shrugging off all Asahi's ridiculous harem shenanigan as normal

haha, well yeah, this happens in a large amount of Animes based on Manga, which the manga version keep going on for several years... (even decades like -One Piece-, detective Conan (Aka Case Closed, etc) ... while the anime just adapted to the few volumen.... (3 to 5 usually a series of 12 episodes)

This episode changed my opinion on this anime tremendously...like everything leading up to this episode had me like "Damn what is even happening in this anime any more? Magical girls, Ninjas, other crazy shit...this show is all over the place." And it turns out it was all a dream.

Honestly I am okay with this. Especially the in depth analysis of who these five Ai's were modeled after.

I am super intrigued to see where this anime will go from here now.

There was some discussion about this on Reddit when the show first aired, and honestly, I think the name is pretty clever. Flops taken as the floating-point term would mean computerized love, and Flops taken literally as Flops would also portray how the love experienced by the MC is literally "flopped" in this plot twist. This anime is shaping up to be pretty interesting!
