I'm not sure what's considered lesser known. These aren't bad I guess.

Madeth Gray'll

And a few others:
Mist of Rouge

Vice†risk

Noir Fleurir

Syndrome

La:Sadie's

Kyo from Dir En Grey was actually once a member in La:Sadie's. It's the most popular of the lesser known vk bands I mentioned.

I'm not as well versed in the genre as many others are, but I rarely see anyone talking about Luna Sea. They're really great.

Not sure if they'd be considered "lesser-known" as I haven't listened to their music as of late, but I used to jam to these bands quite often about 10 years ago (more or less) when I was more into visual kei.

Kagrra's vocalist, Isshi, has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, he sadly passed away in 2011.

I was obsessed with Diaura when they first debuted, even named my Gaia online account after the band.

Classical Orchestra meets Metal = Versailles

SuG was pretty popular when I was in high school, not too sure about now.

And then my all-time favorite band (definitely not lesser-known, but I'll share anyway) Super fortunate that I got to see them once in Japan and once in San Francisco :)

"Lesser Known" "Luna Sea"
My guy, Luna Sea are considered one of the 5 or 10 most important bands in the Japanese music industry

thought the same thing, luna sea are definitely not obscure nor lesser. but it would seem that way about probably most bands if one isn't in the 'know' already.

I'm feeling generous so I'll assume OP is still alive/still looking at notifications here and post some

Helped codify the "90s sound" along with Kuroyume, Luna Sea and some others. Gothy, a bit Sisters of Mercy-ish but with some punk thrown in

Deshabillz

More gothy 90s stuff. Lo-fi and kinda creepy until they went major label

With Sexy

Probably one of the worst band names of all time. They did some really good jangly pop type stuff though, really ethereal and dreamlike. I sorta see their debut as the ultimate light & fluffy vk album

La'Cryma Christi

Sorta big in the 90s, not so much anymore? Bucked all the japanese trends at the time by incorporating a ton of blues and 70s prog rock into their sound rather than the usual punk/goth/metal stuff

And then there's Aliene Ma'riage, Baiser, La'Mule, etc. for more of that formative-90-stuff-direngrey-ripped-off-before-turning-into-bad-metal sound, none of it's particularly obscure in the scene but maybe it is here

I'm not really that into Visual Kei, but I do like DaizyStripper's sound since it seems to have some overlap with J-Rock.

Unfortunately I only know LM.C, I think V-kei was pretty popular when I was new but I was never into the stuff, sadly

Lolita23q didn't last very long but they had a few really good songs and I loved their kinda DIY music videos. Less a visual kei band but I also adored Miyavi! Got to see him in NYC a couple years ago and just so damn talented.
