Tomorrow, July 27th, will mark three years since Nintendo-oriented YouTuber Arlo released the video posted above. Being a vocal fan of the earlier titles in the Paper Mario series, Arlo made a call for fans all over the internet to show support for a possible revival of the series' classic charm by spreading the hashtag #RemasterThousandYearDoor. The hashtag refers to the second game in the series known as Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, which is widely considered by many to be the best entry in the series—and even as the best Mario game ever made by some diehards.

Fans using this hashtag propose that Nintendo remaster the 2004 GameCube title and bring it onto the Nintendo Switch, so that more people will be able to play the game and experience its magic without having to camp out several nights on eBay and send an ambulance for their wallets. While you don't really hear much about it at the moment (...I mean, it has been three years lol), word of this outcry did kinda spread like wildfire on Twitter at the time, and the petition Arlo made on change.org is sitting at nearly 55K signatures as of this very posting! There's even been an article made on it by some gaming site around the time the video was posted.

...well, it's been three years since then. Does anyone still care, and are some of you supporters on this site?

Me personally, playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door has been a part of my childhood that I hope to never forget. I've beat it, one of my siblings has beat it to the point of clearing the Glitz Pit twice, and even my nephew's beat it, all three of us on the same copy we've had for I want to say over 13 years or so now... we all adored our times collecting Crystal Stars through this wacky adventure of a Mario game, and even nowadays I sometimes feel tempted to replay it all over again (yes, backtracking and all lol)... and who knows, I might do just that sometime. So of course I'd like to support the cause and hope that many more people may get a chance to play it legally in the future... but the most I can do for now is make a thread talking about it again, after all this time.

So... how about the rest of you? Have you played Thousand Year Door, and whether you have or not, will you join the cause? :)

I love the game but I have zero faith in Nintendo to remaster the game effectively.

They will water it down for sure.

Also fun fact I never beat it as a kid, it came out when I was 9 and I was a dumbass little idiot who only leveled up HP. I had I think around 120HP and I was stuck on the Grodus fight right at the end of the game lol.

I've only played like bout 2 paper mario games as of now. Super Paper Mario which was rec'd by you and Paper Mario Origami king which was given to me as a gift to my parents way before my bday and eh, Paper Mario Origami King i personally didn't really liked much because it just went way too far off from the jrpg elements Paper Mario had made but the ska music given how SIM my all time favorite nu metal band has ska influences in it.

Super Paper Mario, i've beaten last year and i fucking love swoon.exe it was such a hilarious parody of the romance vns that i play from time to time!! and ofc, i go on online boards to complain about games i never played now thats a classic as well too. Chuggaconroy's walkthrough was such a blessing because it really helped me out alot with getting through to where i need to go since yeah sometimes you can feel like a headless chicken running around not sure where to go at times.

But overall though, i really liked with what i've seen with Paper Mario so far with its jrpg elements as well as it being outside of the usual save princess peach from bowser and also speaking of her, i really liked her in Super Princess Peach and also Super Paper Mario as well too. And i wish we can see more of Princess Peach like this same goes for Rosalina and Daisy as most action they get is with the sports games and yep its always goign to be the only sports games i'll ever play.

And sure!! i'd love to see Nintendo remaster their old stuff and thousand year door i'd so love to try out one day same for the full Mario rpg as well as i've played a bit of it on emulator but i really liked with what i saw bonus points for Yoko Shimoura as well too.

Anyways, nice surprise thread i honestly didn't expect this to be made into a thread 2day and ye, i've signed the petition as well too and if oprainfall could get xenoblade, last story and also pandoras tower then maybe we can make Nintendo senpai bow to us like Denji to Makima. And yeah also do play last story, xenoblade and pandoras tower its really great.

OOF yeah, Nintendo with its 3d remaster of sunshine,64 and galaxy i hear was just a visual upscale and that was it. Not helping either limited copies as well thats scalper heaven too to consider and thats another thing to worry about as well so i guess its expect the worse hope for the best kind of scenarios.

Lol, I own hundreds of games I've never played. I've owned Thousand Year Door and Wind Waker since around 2008. I played Wind Waker for the first time last summer. I'll get around to playing Thousand Year Door sometime this year, I promise.

I guess I should get around to Wind Waker myself, we've had Wind Waker HD for nearly 9 years and I personally didn't make my own file and play it yet...

Well yeah, obviously I think it's safe to say that we'd rather get a brand new game with the combat everyone actually likes.

But the reason why #RemasterThousandYearDoor was proposed instead of that is because of what Starfire said here:

That'd be cool to just have it on the switch for more people to know about the game. I think it still holds strong as it is with how creative it is with visuals, rpg battle mechanics, and storytelling. I've replayed it a few times, and it's still seems great to me. If they do think about remastering TTYD, it wouldn't hurt to remaster the first one.

I agree with how amazing the game is even to this day! In Arlo's original video, he considered giving the first Paper Mario similar treatment, but it's already gotten rereleases over the years, including on the Switch recently. GameCube games, much less just Thousand Year Door, don't really seem to get many rereleases in comparison.

Definitely, since Dolphin is essentially the most feasible option of playing most Gamecube games these days. Bug Fables is decently popular and showcases that there's still a market for RPG Paper Mario games. If Nintendo does remaster or port it, then I hope that they will do the same for the Baten Kaitos games.

TTYD is one of my favorite games, and probably the game I've replayed the most times (the badge system gives a lot of possibilities for challenge runs). I'd rather Nintendo make a new Paper Mario game in the vein of TTYD instead of a remake. I remember being hyped for Sticker Star, thinking it would be some epic adventure in portable form.

I agree and so does the video I referenced.
It's just that a remake could be advised first just to prove to Nintendo that there still is a market for classic Paper Mario.

As a rec for an older game from back in the 90s you can find on the switch, try Legend Of Mana or Grandia those games are pretty fun af.

I'm still a little skeptical that it will happen, but then again I never expected in a million years that Mario RPG would get a remake... sooooo who knows?

In truth, I think Mario RPG is a better candidate to get the remake treatment. It's showing it's age, despite being a great game. But, after that's done, I'm sure people will need their Mario RPG fix satiated. It's only natural to at least port the spiritual successor Paper Mario titles!

That's exactly why I've been less skeptical about this than ever before. Never did any of us expect that Super Mario RPG would actually get remade... I hope that it is well-polished and does well in sales, so that it tells Nintendo that people still want Mario RPGs—we just want actually good ones.

I like what I played of Super Mario RPG, but I lost interest before getting to the end. Perhaps it's because I grew up with Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, but Super Mario RPG doesn't feel like a real Mario game to me. It's merely an RPG like any other on the Super Famicom, except with Mario's face plastered on the box.

It's merely an RPG like any other on the Super Famicom, except with Mario's face plastered on the box.
For me and my family members, Super Mario RPG not feeling like your average Mario game was what made it stand out from not just other titles in the franchise, but other RPGs, with its simple addition of "Timed Hits"—you know about Timed Hits, right? (:P) Probably don't need to say this because you probably already know, but while there were a few games where Peach/Toadstool was playable, she wasn't playable to the extent in this game before and the game goes way further than the usual story of saving her from Bowser. I don't blame you for preferring the Mario RPGs that came after it though, but you can argue that they just simply expanded on and upgraded further on the baseline this game had set. That being said, I really do recommend you give Super Mario RPG another go sometime in the future and finish it all the way to the end.

I can see that. I just see little reason to play it now, when we have access to newer games that do more to establish a Mario RPG identity. I suppose Super Mario RPG still makes a good gateway for fans of old RPGs trying to get into Mario. A lot of "classic" RPGs suck in my opinion, so that fact that this game doesn't is a huge point in its favor.

It's understandable to not want to play it because of its relative simplicity compared to its successors, but I personally still like to revisit Super Mario RPG every now and then even if we have The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. In a way, its simple and straight-to-point structure is pretty good and makes it bearable for repeat playthoughs, and the Timed Hits and all that are always fun to me. I guess I'm just one of the types that like to honor the old but gold stuff... I mean, you do that to an extent with Osamu Tezuka's manga for example, but I guess not everything is for everybody and people tend to go through things in their own ways sometimes, right?

I don't think that is remotely comparable. The closest manga I've read to Astra Lost in Space is They Were 11, a manga published over 40 years beforehand. They all use the same storytelling and artistic techniques that were developed long before Tezuka was even born. The video game is a recent invention and lacks that kind of history. Gaming has changed SO MUCH since the 80s that you'd never be able to recognize Final Fantasy 3 and Final Fantasy 13 as the same series if not for the title. But you're right, there's nothing wrong with wanting to play something old and simplistic. It's just that the Super Famicom has many such games, and even Sega's console has Phantasy Star IV! I'd rather play that or Dragon Quest when I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. I still need to try Chrono Trigger one of these days; I hope it's not as bad as Live A Live and Earthbound.

Sorry I should've clarified, when I said "you do that to an extent with Tezuka", I meant you like to read older works even if there may be new good things out there too. I didn't mean reading any of Tezuka's manga that may be similar to something new... but I think you figured me out with "there's nothing wrong with wanting to play something old and simplistic" as that's more in line with what I said.

You didn't like EarthBound? Huh... well uh I do hope you enjoy Chrono Trigger, at least! They're about the same level of quality/god-tier for me, but they definitely have appeal different enough from each other that I could safely say you might like it. It is literally timeless.

I have no idea what this means. I do think you understood what I said before, but there is a point I'd like to clarify. When I read a book from the 80s or even earlier, I don't think of it as old. When I play a video game from the 80s, I DO think of it as old.
