When you watch the anime sub and actually listen to the characters mentioning Sukuna you'll notice they never pronounce the ๐˜‚ so it's "Skuna" basically .

To me it's very reminiscent of how back in the day everyone would say Sas๐˜‚ke instead of Sasuฬถke in Germany because of the dub .

It's a pain cuz It makes me seem like a stupid weeb when i say it correctly but saying it wrong on purpose is ... well wrong (both feels oddly humiliating)

They don't *not* pronounce it, it's a bit swallowed, like with the word desu. The u is like a breath instead of a letter. It would sound different if you truly pronounce it without the u, saying the s-k like in sky. There is still a little space between the s and k. But yeah, overly pronouncing it or pronouncing the u the American way is incorrect too.

"Su" sounds are shortened more often than not in Japanese. "Ku" is also shortened a lot but not as often.

I don't really consider this cursed info. It's usually the case with names containing "su".

To be honest, it's hard to guess how a japanese pronounce a certain word and it depends on the slang and dialect too.
So I don't think it's a big problem.

If you're saying Skuna, you're pronouncing it worse than anyone else.

I haven't heard or seen anyone pronounce it outside of the Anime, so I can't really confirm. Do they say it like Siukuna?

If you are not Japanese it is not wrong to call it "sukuna", "skuna" is only the Japanese pronunciation, as for sasuke, it is not wrong to pronounce it "sasuke", simply in Japan "u" is almost never pronounced

It doesn't matter, we still make ourselves understandable. And besides, I'm sure most people use [u] or [สŠ] instead of [ษฏ] so we're still saying it wrong anyway.

I'm pretty sure the people who're saying they're not native so they don't give a shit or they don't wanna learn how to pronounce a japanese name are the same people who make fun of Japanese people for pronouncing an english word wrong. And idk it's just a feeling but i think most of these entitled people are 'muricans. So they basically want everyone to speak english but don't even bother to pronounce a single word correct.

No that’s more correct than the other way.

In Japanese, the “oo” sound is often partially voiced or nearly dropped entirely. It’s why desu is said closer to des than to de-su, daisuki is closer to daiski than dai-su-ki, and so on.

Sukuna is pronounced closer to s’kuna than su-ku-na and for someone not acquainted with Japanese pronunciation or accenting it’s more correct to omit the u sounds entirely that to voice them, though the real pronunciation is a little between the two.

As for your question, people who don’t know about Japanese and only read Sukuna’s name pronounce it Su-Ku-Na because that’s how it’s written if you break it up into its component characters.

Sukunas name is pronounced Skuna when said in Japanese. Some of the vowel sounds that follow constants are cut out in spoken Japanese like in the word ๅฅฝใ (suki) which is just pronounced ski. Or like in ใ‚ˆใ‚ใ—ใ (yoroshiku) which is just pronounced yoroshku.

In hiragana his name would be written as ใ™ใใช in English that would be SuKuNa .here's the thing about the character ใ™ (su) in some words you pronounce the U but in others you don't. So I think that the proper spelling would be Skuna instead of Sukuna

I know, and I still think it's worse, because with Skuna you know better and you're still pronouncing it incorrectly.

The common incorrect pronounciation is similar to the way people used to pronounce Sasuke(as mentioned), or the way people often pronounce Pokemon, but in OP's case you have to omit a sound just because it's a better approximation of the way it's authentically voiced. Sukuna really isn't a challenge to pronounce correctly, any more than a name like Asuka or Kazuya(if you play Tekken).

I'll take back what I said, because I think pronunciation is confusing in general when you try to convey it in text.

I do think you're on to something, but in Japanese it would be more like the difference between ใ™ใใช(Sukuna) and ใ™ใ†ใใช(Sลซkuna), with the first more correctly approximating to S'kuna and the second incorrectly to Sukuna.

Sorry for confusing you in my confusion.

ooh thx for clearing that up :D That's definately an interesting idea but don't you think they would have that in the romaji then ? Why would no one say it that way then ? It just doesn't seem that likely to me but it's good to cover all bases ^^

I'm trying to clarify things, but I guess I'm just making it worse

The correct romaji is Sukuna, but the incorrect pronunciation that you pointed out would equate to the romaji Suukuna(in English this sounds like Sลซkuna), the way Sasuke is often pronounced to the romaji of Sasuuke.

Mixing languages makes things confusing because romaji is not a correlate of English pronunciation.

am I getting this right...you're complaining about the sub, right? With native japanese speakers? And you're presuming that you know japanese better than the native japanese voice actors?? What?? Others have already said why it's pronounced the way the characters pronounce it, but still, the audacity is astounding.

you still say the u though if you say skuna very slow there’s obviously an U sound so like not sure what you’re on about if it gets pronounced more clearer or not

Wanna be really mad with how people pronounce names? Be a Haikyuu fan lol. You might even give up and get over it.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Why can't people just pronounce names the way natives pronounce them?

I've seen that mainly native english speakers have this problem. And I'm not talking about pronouncing Japanese names, I'm talking about just pronouncing any name.

I don't want to sound "Woke" or like a "last samurai", as Chris Broad put it, but imo it's disrespectful to someone when you alter their name just so you can feel more comfortable. This is a problem I haven't personally faced because my name is kinda international, but I've seen it happen to friends and total strangers, too.

A nice example would be Joules. This Physical unit of measure was discovered by a French guy named Joules. Since he's French, you should pronounce it like a French person would. Instead, most english speakers pronounce it like Jewels.

Anyway, what I wrote here isn't too coherent, but you get the idea. It all comes down to getting out of your comfort zone and respecting others more. Just my two cents. I'd be happy to respond to any counter-arguments someone makes.

As a German, the Sasuke thing annoyed me so much. The way it was pronounced in the dub was just terrible.

What? I always pronounce Sukuna as in Su-ku-na so you're saying we should pronounce it as S-ku-na?

Sorry for not being a native Japanese speaker!

Surprisingly, you don't need to be a native Japanese speaker to pronounce something correctly!

Even if it's skuna, the transition from "S" to "Ku" isn't so smooth, there is no way you're going to get it working as skuna, even in skuba diving, you can see that you are forced to say "su"kuba diving

If I've made a mistake in English. Feel free to correct me(I'm not a psycopath)
