| Clannad is the buildup. You wouldn’t understand who is who. You wouldn’t have any sense of attachment for the characters. After Story is the ending of the journey. You must watch Clannad first in order to fully comprehend the plot and in order to get the biggest experience out of it. |

| It’s called After Story because it’s the “story after” Clannad, the first season. So no, you cannot. That’s like asking if I can watch the 2nd season of a show without seeing the first — I can do it, but I won’t understand anything since I didn’t bother watching the first season. |

| Just look at synopsis of this one, it clearly it's a "sequel" to clannad, which means they are both connected. Like others have said, you need to absolutely watch clannad first if you want to watch after story. |
| Technically you COULD, but I wouldn’t recommend it. If you jump into After Story, you don’t have the backstory for the majority of the characters and probably won’t feel much for them as a result. I prefer the first season because it has a nice balance of happiness and pain. Please watch the first season! |

| Of course not. Prequels should be watched first and this applies to clannad too. The after story emotional bits will also be helped with the build up for the first season |

| Original Clannad is IMO weaker compared to "after story" in every aspect. It has a typical harem-vibes, it can be stupid and annoying sometimes. Plot progression can be slow, BUT, without watching Clannad first, "after story" will NEVER be as impactful and important to you; also, you won't be able to understand who's who, relationships and backstories of characters and so on. To say it short, DO WATCH Clannad, before diving into "after story". |
| You definitely need to watch Clannad season 1 first, otherwise you won't understand and enjoy After Story. But yes, Clannad season 1 is not even close to its sequel (in terms of quality). |
