Netflix's anime collection has been growing over time. The company has started to acquire more popular titles, as well as creating its own original shows.

I have seen some people claim that anime on Netflix have inaccurate subtitles. I've also heard that Netflix will sometimes cut episodes shorter -- cutting some ending theme songs in the process.

Personally, if I am able to watch an anime on Netflix, I'll do that as opposed to utilizing other websites. For starters, I pay for Netflix, so of course, I want to use the service to get my money's worth. Also, the autoplay feature makes the watching experience more comfortable for me.

What are your thoughts on watching anime on Netflix? Do you find watching anime elsewhere to be a better choice?

Honestly i don’t hate Netflix but they don’t have the best subtitles because they’re mistranslated a lot and they frequently take along time to show up, like it just stops showing them sometimes. They also don’t have the great selection they used to theyve been getting worse every year with the anime selection. they’re taking of hunter x hunter and devil is a part timer. They’ve taken off aot, nana, Madoka movies and a lot of other oldies.

Since I'm a dub guy, I use Netflix whenever I can because the subs aren't the biggest deal. If the show's subbed, though. I end up going to Hulu more often for that. (I also try my best to buy physical releases of shows if I really end up liking them/I know they're good, because I have negative trust in the longevity of digital media)

my friends have netflix and I watched some, the romanian subs are trash, I could've translated better from the english BD script and some knowledge about the anime. Don't know about the english sub though. The video quality is very good, clear and smooth 1080p

I heard Jojo was quite horrible as well. Someone told me they took the subs straight from the dub script... Not the best way to translate a work accurately.

They've acquired a very cool collection over the years and I use it a lot.
I wouldn't recommend using it without vpn if you live in greece like I do though. The anime collection we have here is very limited.

I don't really like their own adaptions but I do like that I'm able to watch a lot of the Ghibli movies on there without needing to worry about the quality of the movie itself so that is a big plus.

And Im happy that Im able to watch them.. the differences in the US Netflix and the Dutch/Belgian one is huge database wise

Some people like accurate subs, good quality--things like that. Hearing other's opinions doesn't hurt, especially when it comes to tips. Ultimately, if there is a means to watch it, I say go ahead. I agree with you in that aspect.

I can see that. I think it's fair to say that they have at least a handful of titles that someone would be interested in, so it's a good place to start. I saw early on when Netflix originals gained popularity on the charts and that made me realize how much of a dent Netflix was trying to make in the animation industry.

They’re a good way to get people into anime. They have ‘starter’ shows like SAO, FMAB, AOT, SDS, NGEand a few others.
I mostly use it to watch ghibli films, seriously their ghibli catalogue is insane. Other than that, I suggest you watch elsewhere.
Overall, they’re not bad. 5.5/10

I don't think there's anything wrong with watching anime on Netflix, but I'm not a huge fan of Netflix itself, particularly because Australia's branch of the company is full of twats and run by an even bigger one, so I will probably never watch anime on Netflix again unless I see some deserved changes in the company. I only ever relied on Netflix for Violet Evergarden, Fate/Apocrypha and 3-gatsu no Lion. 3-gatsu no Lion is on AnimeLab now though, so I won't have to go crawling back to Netflix if I wanna rewatch it.

I think it's pretty convenient that Netflix has variety of anime shows. Quality of subtitles might be questionable, sure, but I personally love that I can still watch anime while I am commuting or travelling for a long time on my phone. It even offers dub option which is way easier to consume while on travel too so... I am not complaining.

I think I might go with other sites in that case. I don't think I can risk misunderstanding a story just to enjoy the comfort of a subscription service. I'll probably just use Netflix for its originals!

They have some good titles though it is mainly reserved to bigger known stuff. I can't say on accurate translations though if what people are saying is true then it's a fair critique. I don't personally like how they show up when watching it covers up more of the screen than necessary.

Don't get me started on Netflix...

HBO's price in my country: 5 bucks.
Netflix's price: Almost 15.

People were quick to remind me that Netflix has around 1500 shows while HBO has 500, so it makes perfect sense that it costs three times as much.
Seriously? That's like saying the Wii had the best library of all time because it had literally twelve metric tons of shovelware.

When it comes to anime, it's precisely the same. Netflix buys a lot of it, but it also buys a whole lot of crap. Honestly, have you taken a look at that list? I'm watching High-Rise Invasion on it right now and, again, it's crap. Complete and utter crap.

The madness never stops. I want to give these guys money, but they really don't want it.
You're straight-up better off with HiDive, I shit you not...

i'm fine with it, but the subs do suck. i would rather watch animes on streaming sites but its to lay down every once in a while and watch anime. some streaming sites have too many ads so i just resort to netflix when i know theres an anime on there i want to watch.

other than that, streaming sites > netflix 99% of the time

When I actually had Netflix I actually watched some anime there if I didn’t feel like getting up gogoanime or 4anime
The subs are really mediocre at best?? But I didn’t mind too much really, just sometimes the pacing of the subs were very very off and cut out before the speaker stops speaking
Watching anime somewhere else is better for obvious reasons like way better selection and just everything else

I think at one point I looked at Hulu’s anime selection. I agree that Hulu is probably the better option out of the two.

Watched the first three seasons of AoT recently on Netfix. No English sub or dub, only weirdly translated Italian and French. Would not recommend.
The Steins;Gate movie was unwatchable, the sub was only in French and really bad.
Tokyo Ghoul season two was censored.
Most of the time, there are only the main episodes. No OVAs or movie, sometimes no season two.
Some anime were removed before I could watch them.
The content varies a lot between countries, without a VPN it can be difficult to find something interesting.
Even with a VPN, finding anime with an English sub is not easy.
When Netflix has exclusive streaming rights on a big anime like Violet Evergarden it's pretty great. But they failed with Evangelion.

I used to love watching anime on netflix. I can exactly skip openings (and before you come for me be honest are you going to watch 500ep and watch every single opening), change episode so it’s convenient to binge, remember time placement of season/episode/time and a pretty nice platform to view it on.

I only stopped using Netflix for anime because they were running out of anime I wanted to watch, kinda caught up to the live action show I watched (ex.family guy, walking dead and Flash) and paying was starting to get expensive as I remember the last time the raised the price.

my only gripe apart from inaccurate subs is that they very rarely sub the text on screen, even if they do it's not a complete sub. fansubs are definitely always more dedicated.

I am not the biggest fan of Netflix. Although I think they do do some things right. The app has been very reliable(for me) . I hardly, if ever, deal with buffering or quality fluctuating, it just works. The player is probably one of the best and prefer it over most others. Netflix is good for anime if you have it already for other reasons or if you are just starting out. If you are a more seasoned anime watcher I would suggest other places. This is where the good for me ends.

There are some things about Netflix I dislike. First off is the pricing. I myself only care about watching anime on there, nothing else. The price for 1080p Netflix(using that because it is the standard if you pay with other services) is $14(Live in USA). I can get VRV, which includes Crunchyroll/HIDIVE, and Funimation, 3 services, for $16. Between the 3 you get a huge library of backlog stuff and probably 99% of all the seasonal anime coming out. These services have their problems and aren't perfect, but they work just fine(for me) the majority of the time. You could argue Netflix is a higher quality service and I couldn't really argue with you, but $14 for one service is a bit much.

Another issue is their catalog. As I stated previously, I only care about their anime selection. The size of their catalog can't really compare to the size of Crunchyroll or Funimation, not even really HIDIVE either, quality of titles aside. It's pretty small.

I also seem to see titles leaving Netflix more frequently than I do the others. I understand Crunchyroll and the rest lose titles as well, but I haven't noticed it. Probably because of the size of their libraries is the reason for it.

Also many of the titles are incomplete. You only get maybe a season or two at most when the series has more. Therefore if you liked the show you need to search out another service to watch the rest.

Lastly, I don' think I have to go in-depth with the "Netflix Jail". Simply, if you like to wait and binge that's cool. Personally I enjoy watching week to week. Considering most other services offer this is frustrating.

There are little things but this has gone on too long anyways hehe

I always feel dirty when I watch anime on Netflix so I usually don't. For some reason it just doesn't seem like the right kind of place to house that kind of media since Netflix is mostly full of originals. And the originals aren't good. I prefer Crunchyroll.

I don't use it myself but I have heard that Netflix often doesn't have the rights to some of the OPs/EDs so they cut them out which could definitely lessen the experience for some shows.
Other than that I also prefer downloading anime and watching them later at my leisure because my internet isn't very consistent which would no doubt cause the video to buffer in the middle of an episode which is just so annoying. Especially if I was trying to stream a show in HD since I have a pretty decent monitor.
And of course there's the issue of Netflix potentially not having all the shows you want to watch which I guess you're saying they are improving on.

Overall it's not something I'm interested in using right now but if they work out some of these kinks and maybe my internet connection becomes more stable I could see myself at least trying it.

Nothing wrong about it but I wish netflix (canada version at least) had more stuff/ didn't cut in annoying spots. They only have the first season of clannad, they only have hxh 2011 up to greed island, they stop shippuden at the 5 kage summit + beginning of the war AND they removed part 1 and 2 of jojo and currently, they only part 3 which is set to be removed soon. But that's stupid since they have the rohan kishibe ova which requires part 4 knowledge to get full enjoyment.. Makes 0 sense

Can't say I've watched enough to have a detailed opinion. I've never subscribed to Netflix, and most of what they have that I want to see is probably on a more anime-specific site that I do subscribe to. I will echo the sentiment that the subtitles can be more "mainstream" and barebones than what anime viewers are used to. It's reminiscent of the difference between watching DVDs in the 2000s made by anime-dedicated companies like ADV, Rightstuf, Geneon, Funimation, AnimEigo, etc., and watching the occasional anime released back then by Sony, Disney, Warner, and similar general-market companies.

Netflix didn't "do anything to" Evangelion. Everything about their new subtitle translations and dubs was supervised and approved by Evangelion creator/rightsholder Studio khara, who didn't like some of the adaptive decisions made by ADV/Manga Ent. for the old versions. Some may prefer the old versions, but the blame for the changes lies with khara, not Netflix.
