THE ONE CHARACTER WHO MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS FUUUUUUUUU

...and here i thought this episode was just gonna be funny when Okabe said "Your victory was a deus ex machina, ergo the cake is a lie."

That was the most disappointing twist of the fucking century.
I was hoping we'd get a twist like "you thought moeka was the villain, but it was actually KURISU" or mayuri or something like that.
It's literally just by plot convenience that this happened. Moeka was extremely shady from the get-go, and she "just happened" to get all the most critical information. She got to know about the existence of the IBN really early (I think? I don't remember), then she became the 5th lab member, the quickest after the main 4, then she was LITERALLY fucking handed the IBN 5100, and she was given a D-mail.
Why are these characters so carefree and dumb when they are trying to prevent a fucking dystopia? could you be any more liberal with giving away information about the last hope of fucking humanity? this dude found the most shady person she could find in the street and just pulled out a red carpet for her to do whatever she wanted. the one person that knew about IBN, when it's supposed to be a lowkey. he even knew from early on that that computer has shit to do with SERN, why did he never get suspicious???
This is actually annoying. if it doesn't get good by the end of today's binge I'm dropping this

@NovaGate I sure hope you didn't drop this, because it's kinda ironic that you'll miss the best part of the twist.

Me towards the episode's 17-18 minute mark: Through this first cour the series just feels like an overhyped slice of life...

Me at the episode's very end:

I was suspicious about Moeka from the time she started taking pictures so I'm not even completely surprised.

Whut. That ending was completely unexpected and so sudden. I guess it was to be like that. It is hard to make good scenes like that, but Steins;Gate nailed it.

It looked awesome, though I started really to dislike Moeka and... Suzuha as well. While Moeka revealed her cards (kinda) and happened to be evil, Suzuha seemed to know what was going to happen, yet did not prevent anything and ran away.

The moment in which Mayushi was shot, probably killed, was devastating to see. :( I thought she might be under plot armor's influence or something, so her getting killed was really unexpected, even more than this random raid on Okarin's lab.

Oh. My. God.

I’m too angry to say anything too be honest. I don’t know why but I completely ignored Moeka up to this point! I knew she was shady but damn! Mayuri didn’t deserve that!

Also, I’m assuming the people who broke in are part of SERN, how did they manage to stop time and move around freely?

LOL the most obvious shady person was indeed shady. Amusing to see how many rage posted against Moeka, I guess Mayuri really favored.

If anything I'm more bothered with Okabe and Suzuha than Moeka (who appears to be just doing her job). Okabe is a paranoid delusional person who's always believed he was being watched and followed yet didn't have any security installed or weapons prepared or safety measures for WHEN his lab is attacked. Okay. Not to mention he let just anyone join as a lab member, no vetting required. And Suzuha (who I've assumed came from the future since like her second appearance), left before the attack and then showed back up after Mayuri died. Doesn't make sense to me.

Episode 13:

As for Okabe, he is just an immature teenager. Don't expect him to be perfect, or mature. In the end, he is just a kid, who went too far with his curiousity. That's why he is so relatable.

Well, he doesn't look like a generic 18-year-old anime MC who actually looks like 12...

The surprise for me when I watched it for the first time wasn't who turned out to be the bad person, but rather the fact that Okabe Rintarou's chuunibyou delusion became reality.

This got to be the worst cliffhanger in anime history lol, because SHIT HITS THE FAN REALLY HARD with this one. Watching this during its airing must have been painful, because people would have to wait weeks for second cour lol.

Moeka is the SERN spy, damn does she look hot but still, she's ice-cold! What did Facebook does to you Moeka??

Hell has begun for Okabe.

Oh, that scene at the start is pretty good!

Yeah, I think this is finally the episode that's the turning point of the series.

The past episodes felt like they were implying that Mayushii is going to die. Turns out that was going to happen. Damn it, why did she have to die?

Turns out Suzuha was right that one of the lab members is a traitor. It just wasn't Kurisu. I mean, yeah, I think it would have been a little weird if she's the traitor.

Mayushii's final death in this episode is just too tragic. Being shot and hit by a car is straightforward. But being accidentally killed by Nae? Damn, I wonder if there's going to be an even more tragic death in the next episodes.

The episode is leaving me dumbstruck for whether I should see the next episode or not. Of course I'm hoping they find a way to save her and get revenge on SERN, however I'm also fearful that may become impossible.

In other news, looking through this thread is very much a tumble through time. The earliest posts seem to be from 2011, and there is a string of reactions all the way to 2021. A decade of people seeing the same episode, and 90% of those reactions are the same. How curious.

I just realized that this is Episode 12, halfway through the 24 episodes. I should know by now that some big climactic event always happens at the halfway point in anime hehe. I should've been expecting something to unfold in this episode.

I think the SERN guys are kinda lame though... it's supposed to be some sophisticated organization involved in time travel, and yet the people who burst into the lab are just regular guys with guns and cheap masks.

Also F the Moeka chick. Never liked 'er.

... great episode though! My outlook on this anime keeps improving.

Yep, this is where Steins;Gate gets extremely good IMHO, episode 13 and up is where this anime really shines, the 1st half was slow but necessary but the 2nd half is what made Steins;Gate my favorite anime.

In the 2nd half Steins;Gate gets pretty damn dark, it feels like a completely different anime from here on.

^ I'm on Episode 14 rn and those were my thoughts exactly. Like, verbatim. The show just completely flipped over, from a somewhat mundane comedic one to something really suspenseful. Every episode just gets better and better. I wasn't prepared for how dark it got lol, certainly hits the feels.

I also think the first half was slow in a necessary manner. I think we needed 11 episodes of simple character bonding to build up for the impact of whatever's happening in this second half. Good observation.

Moeka, you flying tall ugly bastard. I knew something was wrong with you since the beginning. Part-time soldier is a human sent from the future back to the past to warn Rintaro. Will Mikase betray them? and work for SERN with Moeka? So many questions.
A fun beginning but it ends up with Mayurii's death. Will he go back in time to save her? Damn. Interesting..

Curious about Moeka's backstory

Mayuri doesn't deserve this. I think this show is more centered around Makise and Okabe but it seems like we'll have a Mayuri arc

I admit that when I first watched Steins;Gate, I disliked Mayuri at first for being an annoying airhead with an exception of her catchphrase 'Tutturu' which warms my heart but now I witnessed Mayuri's death in a horrific moment. She's beginning to grow on me as an important person and I eventually start to like her!
