Another great ep! It was pretty faithful to the novel.

To be honest, I feel bad for Xuan Ji even though she's pretty much a crazy ghost now.
While still alive she fell in love with a man who would never love her back and she tortured herself to get his attention. If only she could have let go.

As expected, Pei Ming's good looking. And so was Junior Pei, Pei Su!

May Xiao Ying rest in peace, she was a good girl.

Also in the last scene when the boy removed his bandages, Xie Lian's horrified face broke my heart.
And the scene right after that... The person turning around with the mask on his face... Ahhh novel readers know what I'm talking about ;__;

I'm also happy with how closely they are following the novel thus far.

To a non-novel reader, the girl's death was probably a meh at best. I got that vibe. Just saying. ^^;

And I am not a fan of them mixing in the cell-shaded segments to the brides. It was kind of jarring, but I'll live. As long as they don't go overboard with it like MDZS did (cough, that giant turtle thing, cough).

Will Xuan Ji appear again?

she will but a looooot later, probably not in the next few seasons, and she won't really have any big role later or anything. she will be there in the background.
for the second question,

not sure if just stating this is really a spoiler though.

Xuan Ji will appear again :) although you won't be seeing her for a while... like... many seasons a while later
Pei Ming is a really popular person after all XD

For the second question...

I can't spoil too much so many apologies >.<

The story is absolutely amazing tho >.< so even if you weren't inteerested in the romance between the two leads, I highly recommend reading it for the plot~

I love this adaptation, they're following the novel closely. I reread the novel twice already and I definitely need to reread it again. it's 10/10 for me just because I love tgcf so much.
I only wish they included more of Xie Lian's inner thoughts but other than that the donghua is certainly exceeding my expectations!

it's kind of funny how butthurt people get over tgcf ranking so high, questioning that it's the job of bots etc etc, or being like "how can someone rate anything just after one ep!" as if it doesn't happen with anime adaptations of beloved manga/novels? lol

Xuan Ji's story is so sad and tragic. I wonder what MXTX has hidden in all of this first arc, the temple situation probably has deeper meaning, also that bandage boy. I also find it interesting that General Pei jr did a massacre(s) before ascending.
I'll probably leave the novel till first season finishes, even if I'm tempted to grab it right now.
Anyway I don't think the CGI brides were bad. They did it from a father distance compared to MDZS's glaringly obvious CGI turtle. Plus the jewellery on Xuan Ji looked so well done! I forgot to say the same thing with you-know-who in the previous episode ;)

Another great ep. The CGI is a bit jarring but the fight was executed greatly lol. I think it's great that TGCF established its theme about misleading information right at its first arc (because we gonna see alot of it as the main theme).

I feel bad for Xuan Ji but I dont think Pui Ming is on the wrong either. He clearly stated that they wouldnt commit with each other for the lifetime, so it was totally her choice to be by his side and did every crazy thing for that. If Pui Ming wasnt that determined then for sure it would just hurt Xuan Ji more.

The girl's death was meh, but well I guess we dont intent to feel that much emotion.

Xie Lian still managed to make me laugh in the fight 😂 it's kind of funny and sad at the same time when he is too used to do circus stuff on the street and bet for money in a fight.

And ohhhhh the last scene with that mask.

Let me just say how glad I am that the human face disease doesn't look as horrifying as I pictured it while reading the novel because those scenes man... I still don't know how I DIDN'T have nightmares after reading that.
I've played plenty horror games, read horror and seen horror movies but I was tempted to just skip over certain scenes in the novel *shivers*

I'm not a fan of CGI but I'm used to it by now and I'm not really bothered by it. If it means they can focus more on the important scenes and work harder on those then I'm happy. It still has better animations than average.

That Pei Jr entrance tho. Why do I picture XL just dropping out of the sky and landing on his butt unceremoniously? Lol

I wonder how far 11 episodes can take the plot. How far do you guys think we'll come?

It's also not nearly as horrifying as I imagined it to be. I can't decide whether I'm disappointed or not. I'm not a big fan of horror as a genre and I can be somewhat sensitive to horror imagery, but at the same time, it's supposed to be disturbing. The body horror is a big part of what makes that arc so gut-wrenching.

Same. I don't like it, but I can't say it diminishes my enjoyment too much.

Overall, I feel like it's a pretty solid adaptation so far. I can enjoy it more because I've read the novel, but I think I'd find it intriguing enough even if it was my introduction to the story.

I've read the novel too and it's interesting to see the references in the donghua like Fu Yao being good at cleaning. LOL Or when Xie Lian mentions his acrobatic performance lines and asking for donations.
I definitely can't wait for San Lang's appearance. Hopefully next week's episode. My only dread is it'll end like the PV where Xie Lian spots San Lang riding the ox cart with him & then roll end credits. .. then have to wait to the next episode to see the full interaction & finally hear San Lang's voice!

Ruoye sure is best bandage!

Anyone else notice the flute music during the beginning of the episode with the corpse brides? Definitely sounded like the Yiling Patriarch was there! I wonder if they used the same sounds from MDZS? Imagine a crossover with Wei Ying confronting Xuan Ji and the other corpse brides. That would be epic.

Glad that the Conny Springer lookalike got what was coming for him. He didn't deserve all the chances that the poor girl did trying to save his sorry butt.

Xuan Ji sure is yandere. I wonder who is more yandere between her or Yuno Gasai? Thoughts?

The eyeroll again from Yu Yao. LOL
Is it just me or does Nan Feng also remind anyone of Mako from Legend of Korra?

Anyway farewell lovely bridal gown of our Dianxia, you shall be missed. Till next episode.

Stop whining about the rating already. Every post about rate discussion has been shut down for a reason.

There's animes on MAL with ratings of 8 I would personally rate 3 or something not everyone enjoys the same thing the same way. And most people watching TGCF are novel readers which have a totally different experience with this anime

Basically yes. I'd rate it 8/10 personally if I were going in blind, since it's still an interesting premise and good execution, but the novel is honestly one of the best books I've ever read so that of course colors my opinion.

And yeah ratings on MAL are super subjective. I'm not a fan of Brotherhood and some of my 10/10 rated shows have an average score of 7.x, this is just how MAL is.

wow, some ppls still salty about the score....

eps 3 actually sad, xiao jing is a good girl, and for xuan ji yeah she's the pitiful one,
Pei Ming should not give her a hope too much, but Xuan Ji's bad attitude just made Pei Ming run away from her, in the novel even Xie Lian said that he can understand Pei Ming because of Xuan Ji's bad attitude.

Xie Lian's terrifying reaction to bandage boy's human face disease, novel reader can relate to him.

For what it's worth, I am a fan of the novel and I would rate this 3.5. The art is lovely, and the animation's pretty mediocre, but that's fine. I'm already attached to the characters, but I remember my thoughts at this point in the novel. (Mostly neutral. Xie Lian is pleasant enough, but his calm demeanor struck me as a bit bland until I got to his backstory.)

It has barely scratched the surface of the world (or more accurately, worlds, I guess) and its characters. Most of the main characters haven't even appeared yet. For me, the novel also had somewhat of a slow start, but once it built some momentum, I was fully immersed.

That said, it's obviously subjective and you may never get to a point where you like it all that much. But if you find it at least moderately entertaining/intriguing, then I would suggest continuing for now.

Just binge-watched the three episodes, I'm liking it a lot so far! The artstyle is really appealing, the story has a lot of promise, and the Lian Xie seems like a capable and intelligent MC. Wonder when Cheng Hua is gonna appear again. NGL I thought it was him who came to save the MC, although yeah that would've been too cliche xD

Didn't really care for the girl's death (pretty reckless/dumb how she just went out there with a stick but hey I'll give her some credit for being brave). The ghost bride's backstory was sad, but I would say it was mostly her fault since she blamed him for a lot of things she did to herself. Although heartless (?), he technically didn't do anything wrong.

Nice cliffhanger with an intriguing start of a plot-point about a dangerous disease. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes!

The face reveal at the end was terrible. I'd imagine a non novel reader thinking that the show is just trying to imitate horror poorly. In the novel there was alot of suspense regarding the boy's bandaged face, but I suspect it was because of the time limit of the episode and they wanted to somehow end up on a cliff hanger.

I haven't read the novel. So far it's well done but nothing really stood out. The girl's story is meh... If anyone wants better done short love stories along that line, try Hundred Demon Manual, in my opinion. But this arc is supposed to just set up the characters anyways. I'm hoping the real plot picks up soon. With 11 episodes, I'm guessing this will go multiple seasons with who knows how much time in between.

Like you said, this part of the story is only meant to introduce the world and a few of the main characters.

As far as I can tell, there was no actual love story. The girl is a minor character who took care of a starving, homeless kid (with whom she had no romantic relationship), and sacrificed her life to protect someone else who was a near-stranger to her. She is clearly kind and selfless, but since not much time was spent developing her character, I don't think the viewer is meant to have that much of an emotional connection with her.

The relationship between Xuan Ji and Pei Ming couldn't really be considered a love story either since they were never seriously romantically involved. They had a mutual understanding that it was a fling, she became infatuated, and he took advantage. Her infatuation only grew to the point of madness.

I hope you don't wish that for anyone in real life. You mean taking advantage of someone's feeling and then horribly destroying them when you finish having your fun. She was terrible for betraying her country but he was an asshole too. If I remember he said that later on after they went out for a while. Are people supposed to magically know when the other person just decides to quit. He should've told it first day ditto, not after using all he wants, while she was oblivious it was only few nights Stand. I just don't agree with such morals, since I know how terrible it is for people who've gone through that.

I really think Pei is the asshole here and Xuan Ji kind of the victim.
How does noone else see that? They did not fall in love mutually Pei captured Xuan Ji then the force-kissed her and through the power of love and stockholm syndrom she fell in love with him and they started a relationship, although only physical at first.

Now Xuan Ji fell for Pei, who did everything in his power to ensure that she falls for him.
She even stated after their first kiss that she basically cant field the troops anymore if she is in a relationship. And he was fine with it, implying that he will take care of her (as bride I guess).

Yet, as is stated in the show, everytime Xuan Ji wants to have a serious talk about their future he gets dismissive and ignores her. *way to go pal first make her fall in love with her then ignore her*

So in my humble opinion Pei is to blame cause he made her fall in love with him only to discard her when she got attached to him. And the show portrays it as tho Xuan Ji is the bad guy. Yes she got obsessed with him and eventually turned into an evil spirit but that could all have been easily avoided if Pei got off his mighty horse of pride and selfishness and had a hearth to hearth conversation with Xuan Ji explaining how he feelt, how he now feels and why he does.

I really cant blame Xuan Ji for going mad.

ooo this was a fantastic episode.

I feel bad for the ghost groom- warrior lady, yes she is in the wrong and was acting quite spoiled but general pei should've been more assertive with what he wanted in their relationship

the endingggggggg

ART IS ON FLEEEKKKKK MY MANS OVER HER-

He said from day one that it was a no strings attached hookup and put up with her clinginess until she did something PM just couldn't ignore (sold out her own coutry for selfish reasons).

You mean when he force kissed her and implied that she no longer needed to field the army because he would take care of her for the rest of his life.
Yeah totally sounds like a one night stand and not a proposal *facepalm*

Yes, and that totally justifies murdering innocent young women just because he may look at them from heaven above.

Forceful kiss was a donghua addiction. And when exactly did he promise that? He said to live in a moment.

Pei Ming never lies about his intentions or promises fidelity or marriage. He's been upfront about how their relationship is going to be, still stayed with her after after losing interest and did take care of Xuan Ji after she mutilated herself.

Pei Ming actually highly values loyalty and is quite loyal himself. Even if there would've been a minuscule chance of something, Xuan Ji destroyed it with her own hands with her offer to sell out her country.
