I've looked through a lot of profiles here and there seem to be many women, which is really surprising considering that Japan's sexist views reduce them to mere fanservice material in 90% of anime shows. So, unless the "female" users are males who fake to be a girl to get attention like what happens in online games, i can't really explain how could any woman align with something that is mainly directed to straight males and leaves barely any space for them. There are some good examples of female characters and shows done right when it comes to representation, but what about all the rest? It seems like anime is going backwards when it comes to catering to the female viewers, who sadly have to leave space for the overabundant male pandering. Sadly, even tho the female characters are many and more tha the male ones by sheer numbers and get more screen time, they always become mere subjects of pantyshots and the clichè "oh my god i fell over you and grabbed your boob don't slap me" kind of gross objectification. So, my question is: what makes women watch anime :/ ? i would be really glad if i got some insight by their part, i am doing a research/survey about this. PS: i lost my old account but it didn't have many anime in the list anyway, so i made a new one since it's not that big of a loss. |

I've looked through a lot of profiles here and there seem to be many women, which is really surprising considering that Japan's sexist views reduce them to mere fanservice material in 99% of anime shows. 99% is a big exaggeration, massive one actually. There is plenty anime that does not sexualize women or if it does, it does so properly and treats them as more than just that. So there is definitely enough for women to enjoy. More than enough. So, unless the "female" users are males who fake to be a girl to get attention like what happens in online games, i can't really explain how could any woman align with something that is mainly directed to straight males and leaves barely any space for them. Women that are not straight exist as well, ya know? Besides, as said above, there is plenty to choose from either way. There are some good examples of female characters and shows done right when it comes to representation, but what about all the rest? And by done right I am guessing you mean done in such a way that it caters to you? Because I am sure as hell you are not talking about how well written the character is, people in threads like these never talk about that.Sadly, even tho the female characters are many and more tha the male ones by sheer numbers and get more screen time, they always become mere subjects of pantyshots and the clichè "oh my god i fell over you and grabbed your boob don't slap me" kind of gross objectification. Fun fact, ecchi is not that common in anime! You're just making shit up because you such at finding shows that do not include that. Side point being sexualized and being objectified are not one and the same, and are not mutually inclusive. So, my question is: what makes women watch anime :/ ? i would be really glad if i got some insight by their part, i am doing a research/survey about this. Some of them don't mind it, some actually like it. Not every girl is a feminazi, might be a surprise, some are actually smart enough to find shows that they like, which you seem not to be.PS: i lost my old account but it didn't have many anime in the list anyway, so i made a new one since it's not that big of a loss. Let's say I believe you but everything here sounds fishy, that Steven Universe (commonly considered an SJW cartoon), new account, usually a sign of a troll, non-binary as a gender. It can be a coincidence but it looks like one of the accounts that shitty memers who think they are funny tend to make and then act like what they think a feminist is in the forums. |

I don't know how you came to the conclusion of 99% of women in anime being purely for fanservice, but it's complete horseshit. You see considerably more female MCs in anime than you do in Hollywood, and majority of them are treated as humans and not objects. |

Sounds like you're speaking primarily of ecchi & harem anime which tend to pander towards the male audience. Your typical anime wont show panty-shots like its nothing. A example of female fanservice would be "Free!" which sexualize men a lot. Hell, even Kuroko no Basket has a large female audience. Ultimately the medium is dominated by men, hence why so much fanservice exist that "objectify" women. But that doesn't mean men aren't sexualized either |

Because people latch onto things that possess vaguely relatable aspects to them way too strongly and begin to view things like "female character" as a standing, walking, talking single entity that can be hoisted up to be representative of their entire gender, as if women were some kind of gestalt conciousness that can be whittled down into something so incredibly narrow as any given female anime character. Thus, when one gets sexualized, extremists like OP get uptight about it like this because they're incapable of recognizing the sheer absurdity of the situation and how black and white the stance they're taking on it is. It's all incredibly shallow and comes across a somewhat objectifying in of itself, ironically, given that it's rolling any character with a vagina up as a mouthpiece to stand representative for every female. Throw in the condescending, "you should be disgusted by this!" implications, the sheer amount of hyperbolic statements and numbers tossing, and outright dismissal of everything that goes against the narrative the OP is espousing, it just comes off as a meme that people can't take seriously. Which is sad, because people should look at this as an example of the stupid of the extreme left rather than dismissing it as a conspiracy alt-account to make all of feminism look bad. It should go without saying that yes, feminists have idiots like this person who are completely unironic in their thoughts. They're not some mythical creature you'll only ever people making fun of, they do exist. Would be like me dismissing everyone who posts blatantly white supremacist type stuff as just shitposting memers trying to piss people off and make right-wing nationalists look bad. Still just two political groups at the end of the day, and doing like so would be trying to shift the extremes and dismiss them as some sort of covert infiltrator rather than just shooting them the finger and pushing them into their own corner with a dunce hat in tow, as should be. Anyway, no, there's nothing wrong with sexualization and if you find it objectifying and disgusting or whatever thenstep down off of your moral grandstanding and just avert your eyes. You're never going to make it go away. People sexualize women all of the time. People sexualize men all of the time, too, all the goddamn time and it gets terribly understated in comparison for some reason. There's nothing wrong with doing things to boost sex appeal, and it'd probably be easier for you, anyone who takes extreme issue with this, as well as myself to just...not let it bother you so much. It's not a big deal. Of course, I fully expect nothing I wrote here to matter and that I'm just going to get a response along the lines of "how dare you speak for women?" judging by the OP's earlier responses, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This is why I can't stand being around people who let their political views and ideologies permeate every aspect of their lives. |

Just because a female character is attractive, or her breasts are displayed prominently on screen, doesn't automatically make her objectified. Most decent anime series have many female characters with agency, who are capable of making decisions and exhibit control over their actions. Just because they may be hot and busty, they're still characters and aren't being objectified. Granted, there are plenty of anime (in the ecchi and harem genres in particular) that do resort to a certain level of objectification, but they're basically just intended as soft-core porn and not to be taken seriously anyway. Fanservice is just a thing in Japan (as most of the world), and it goes both ways. You've posted a number of examples of shounen females in this thread (Erza, Nami, etc.), but shounen series are generally a great example of equal-opportunity fanservice. The males in those shows have incredible ripped bodies and go around with no shirts on half the time. Shounen by nature are teenage male fantasy vehicles - they demonstrate unrealistic male body expectations and unrealistic female body expectations as things that teenage boys would fantasize about. Sure it's very superficial, but it goes both ways, and it's only objectification if a character's only purpose is their appearance or sexuality - that's not the case in those shows, as both male and female characters bring many qualities/personalities/growth to the table. |

Kaijuu Girls: Ultra Kaijuu Gijinka Keikaku 2nd Season gdMen MamenekoInazma Delivery: Dougyousha Attack-hen You're talking like woman doesn't like to wear revealing clothing. Like you said, the medium is dominated by males, hence why attractive, female characters are more appealing to look at. Males are also drawn with perfect body proportions which females enjoy. Showcasing breasts or leggings is so minuscule to bring up as a problem. This is not just common in anime, but the gaming industry as well. Why would you care about social justice when it doesn't matter in a fictional medium? You're bringing it up as an issue when it's really not. You're speaking on behalf of others when it's not your place to do so. While fanservice does get excessive and repulsed even by men, it's just fictional. Applying fiction to real life predicaments is stupid. imho. Although I do see your argument as valid, it just doesn't matter to overall enjoyment (unless you're watching ecchi or harem which is 100% male oriented). |
