I'd say that this was a pretty good start, in terms of setting, characters and action.

With this show being 24 episode long, it'll give us more of a chance to understand our characters, main and supporting, as well as the mechs themselves. So I do find myself a little annoyed that people are already ripping Hiro apart.

Generic he might be for now, but I feel that other users are being too judgemental and not giving him a chance to develop as a character, just like with Violet Evergarden. =/

Anyway, the mecha design looks nice and the animation for the battle against the Klaxosaur was very good, so great job to the animation teams there. =)

What does interest me though is when Zero Two mentioned that he had Klaxosaur blood inside of her. I do wonder if that might be the reason as to why she has those two red horns on her head.

I mean, I had also embraced cringe twice during this episode, but those moments are done to make the lesser human beings sympathize with the series, so that do not feel left out of the complex settings. You just have to endure them because you know - there is greatness, truth behind it, stretching to the end of the series and beyond.

Went in without expecting a masterpiece and was very satisfied by the end. After Kiznaiver I'm going to be cautious about getting involved in it too soon. The premise is there, the cast is there, the studios are there; please don't ruin it with the 24 eps length and keep the quality up for the whole series.

You know what hits me the hardest, how every single series, whether it has a weak or strong starting main character (MALE because it seems the core problem for some insecure adolescents), he always keeps evolving until the end. And this simple, merely statistical truth seems to evade the simplest of the mass. As if the concept of evolution is lost on them, even though they had undergone it at one point themselves. Invokes endless pity in me.

Trigger never fail to deliver!

already got my hopes up when I hear Trigger gonna do this... and yesss, it was a hit.

every aspect of this is good so far comparing it to other show that airing now (unless the music, not really paying atention to any so not sure). I even find the art is a lot more beauty than Violet Evergarden for now... my only complain is the Mech design. I'm one of those people that thinks Mech needs to be an epitome of badassery, and this just throw it out of the way ,lol, not saying the mech design is ugly... It just a matter of preference I think

From what I was able to follow in the mess it seemed like it was supposed to be a test day for the pairs with the new mechs so even if they tried to fight they would have gotten owned due to no experience.

The auto-defense of the plantation was spectacularly useless though.

Only thing saving them was Zero Two deciding to swim there lmao. So like what is going on, the pairs get super strong when they get horny???

Hmm a mobile flying city huh. I guess the girl really did want to swim then huh. Now that was a interesting first encounter. But that girl really was something. Beyond her strange attitude she actually is pretty perceptive as well. So parasites are the children that were chosen to become pilots then. Interesting how each pilot is also a male female pair then. So Hiro's loss of ability was what caused him and his partner to fail their training. The city sure had an impressive defence though. So its the feelings between the male and female pair that make the mecha more effective then. An impressive first episode that did well to introduce the setting and characters.

That’s what I call an opening episode! This is going to be a really interesting show I feel like. The two main characters seem good (the ship has already sailed!) and the concept of two birds sharing one body to support one another is a nice take. Sharing the burden as they pilot seems similar to Pacific Rim which is cool. The premise seems decent and mysterious, we’ll have to see how it all plays out but the monsters are very weird looking. Almost like they’re biotechnology that went haywire. And the animation and OST is top notch, you can see the heavy Trigger influence in the animation and character designs. Teaming up with A-1 probably was a good idea, helps ease the work load.

Cant wait for more.

It might be that you wanted to hate him before even starting to watch this, since you expected something more TTGL~ish.

But in its essence, his behavior was fine. A lot of people don't pay attention to the fact that his life goal was ruined. Listen closely to what he says at the end and how he decides not to be a wimpy runaway. And before the monster appeared, he even tried not to leave this place and get back at his training. I think they deliberately created this little moment so the viewers would know that he's a lot more ballsy than Shinji from Evangelion, for example.

Yeah, though I have also wanted a TTGL, and I got it, but the thing is, they would have hated it before even seeing the series. Their wretched test makes them hate the "weak, undeveloped (Duh this is the first episode you imbeciles), generic" "Main character", I don't pinpoint where that comes from, self-insecurity or some kinda corrupted sense of dominance they want to project upon their gender, but either way I would avoid having any dealings with those that start "Series is crap the characters are generic weak the mechs are ugley tra-ta-ta" from the get go.
This is not some disgust aimed at lesser human beings (which is probably why the hate), you don't see one male 6 females and see it for what it is: Some deviant stuff to leech off some unhealthy adolescents. This is an actual (for now attempt, but I am sure it will become) art.

Nice assumptions, but no. I expected nothing particular out of him or this anime in general as I blindly watched it after seeing some gifs on twitter (without knowing which studio is involved etc.).
Of course this is the beginning and there is lots of time for him to develop and improve, but so far I'm not really fond of him.

Also, I agree with everyone saying that this episode felt incredibly rushed. Barely any room to breath.

Yet another anime where the only redeeming factor is its female main character, 002 was fine but I dont get the "best gurl this winter season already" like calm the hell down people.
Anyways hella generic start, not fond of the mecha but the animation was a blast so I may stick around just for that.

Good job you just missed the badass mecha fight.

I just finished the episode.
That was the most boring sakuga fight I have ever seen. Literally every generic sakuga fight. But since it's sakuga, literally everyone is going to dickride it.
The visuals look kinda bland, especially from Trigger. The characters are boring asf, but the horned girl is waifu material and her personality's kinda entertaining.
Eh, but I still want to like this anime.

So...did the girl turn into the mecha? What was, "monstrous" about her?

@V0ltg

Interesting. I thought I was the only one.

@Aelyn

I didn't even think what the MC would be like, and I dislike him. His design is bland. He constantly inner monologues, which I hate. And he has no personality. With such a shitty starting base, I seriously doubt that when he gets his, "character arc" it's going to be interesting.
Hell, even Thorfinn in the beginning of Vinland Saga was way more interesting than him.

I really don't like mecha, but I'll give a chance for the beautiful animation and romance. But, tell me... Another series of mecha where the power is based on kisses? Did Zero Two kiss their old partners as well? Hiro kissed Naomi? Kisses are important things to me.

Animation wise, I loved it. Composition of certain shots were good. A lot of secondary motion (hair) so I'm assuming Megumi Kouno was involved. I enjoyed the parts that Imaishi clearly took control (the reveal of the synchronized unit).

I knew someone would be mad about the butt grab. Pervy uncles are not socially acceptable anymore I guess.

It's funny how portrayal of death and gore carry less stigma than grabbing someone's ass these days.

Yeah, how unfortunate. In the olden times, we just laughed it out. The funny old man, let him be :D
To be fair, I don't like some - not all - violence tropes either, so why not both? Besides, unwanted groping is violence, by the way.

Another disclaimer for those who didn't get it: my problem is not just with an unwanted ass grab, but what it implies. This guy is the designer of those robots. He clearly has an agenda. Also, the whole cockpit setup - and the plot - screams of forced heterosexuality, so I'll skip. Maybe it'll change later, but I don't count on it.
I didn't have problems with, for example, Zero-Two's nude scene. I've seen my fair share of nude girls in anime. And she went naked for her own sake; she wanted to bathe. And because of fanservice, of course. This is how you do proper fanservice, by the way.

And it had its moments, but they killed off one of the most promising character immediately. I guess she'll be like the impersonation of the protagonist's guilt and why he couldn't save her. How unfortunate ;_;

Generally, we should use the term "rushed" for specific situations when the already existing material (manga/LN) is being packed too tightly into the anime adaptation.

If anything, it was a fast-paced episode, but not rushed. I'm actually worried about the possibility of them slowing it down to a pure boredom of unnecessary social interactions or even something akin to "school life".

Hopefully whatever else Trigger are working on ends up being better because this shit sucks. Characters were also pretty boring and obnoxious. The use of CG was jarring and the backgrounds were lackluster and boring. Just boring, boring, boring everywhere.
