Does it bother you when the artstyle of an anime/franchise is -slightly or notoriously- changed with time?

Whether this happens during the same show or in another installment of the same franchise?

In terms of....mainly character designs, their face features, body shapes, proportions, coloring, contrasts, and so on (backgrounds too)?

Do you think once a certain artstyle is defined/settled for the first episodes of a show or the first installment of a franchise, studios must stick to it keeping it constant until conclusion? Or you think that artstyles must "go with the times" adapting to new techniques or standards, even if this implies having to radically change the visuals and characters aspects?

Does it annoy you if this is the case or you just don't care?

as manga reader who spent more years than quick prodcted tv anime... it's kinda surprising when realized it tbh..

Honestly to me, it depends on how drastic it is. If it is only minor changes over time then I don't see it as a big deal, but if to drastic all at once yeah sure it can be annoying.

Nami and Robin looked best around Alabasta in One Piece, before Oda got lazy about drawing proper female body proportions.

It bothers me a little in that case. Other than that nothing immediately comes to mind.

Only when I go back and watch a movie from like 10+ years ago and see the difference. Outside of that the change is so subtle and over such a long period of time that I often rarely notice. At least assuming it's done well and not just trying to mix things up to keep it fresh.

No. I'm more bothered with inconsistent art in the same season though.

I'm asking this because:

I understand some studios want to modernize their classics. But with this one they went just too far. It's literally watching a completely different series, with different characters, a totally different thing. For me it's just not the same and I just couldn't stand it. I don't understand if Toei could keep the character designs of DBZ when starting DBS why couldn't they do the same in Digimon.

They did the same with the Saint Seiya franchise in Soul of Gold. Many of the golden saints looked so annoyingly different it almost felt like some extreme Nip/Tucky plastic surgery was done on them.

It doesn't bothers me unless the new artsyle ends being worse than the old one. In the case of the new Digimon, I don't mind the change that much, since the old designs were a bit clidlish for the "darker" story of Tri, so is fine for the most part (imo).

It didn't used to....then I saw Fairy Tail 2 and went, "Damn that's ugly."

Although before that I did think it was off putting to see situations like Bubblegum Crisis where they can't decide on standard hair color for a character in a franchise.

I was very happy when they changed the animation studio. feels did a great job. Although, I didn't really like Totsuka's new design. Didn't look as good as it did in season 1.

Well, Brain Base don't exactly do new season, but overall, Studio Feel manage to to make it even more genuinely good.

The only change in art I've ever actually been disturbed by is Mekakucity Actors. The budget for it was not planned accordingly and in some parts the animation was just bad.

It does bother me sometimes, but not always. The time skip in OP never bothered me.

Yes.

For example Prince of Tennis. I love the first few season that was released. Then came the New Prince of Tennis with the obvious CG. Everything's like gone straight. And boy, I've never seen Tezuka's face that sharp!

And another one's Detective Conan. I dunno if it's really the CG's effect but I noticed that the gap between Conan's eyes gets wider and wider as years go by..
..as I get older.. but he doesn't.. and Ran's still in high school...

If we are talking about within the same show:

It all depends and it all comes down whether how drastic it will be within the change or not. If it's in a bad way I expect myself to cringe. If not, then I expect myself to be like getting used to it for a bit.

If we are talking about different installments this applies to the first one. But I think this is more of a longer point I suppose or longer time to get used to. Cringe can be kind of a 25-75 chance to be honest.

I only like anime where the character designs change randomly mid-scene.

My favorite anime is the first Last Exile, then there was another one called Fam the Silver Wing that was hm... a bit different in the art, only so slightly I guess, but to me it was big, to the point I dropped it on the 3rd episode, but I plan to go back for it, yay.
This second one was so silly too. Yuk ^^

I think Yui and Yukino look much better in Feel's artsyle, but I prefer Brain Base's Hachiman a bit more, since Feel's one looks too handsome for what is supposed to be an antisocial, cynical and plain looking teen.

I've found it really annoying that the artstyle of Detective Conan has progressively become less pleasing to look at. For example, Conan looks less cute because he never has a round chin anymore, Ran looks less cute because they've messed up her face, and Kogoro's body looks all clunky now. Basically, his proportions feel more awkward now. The same could be said about most of the other characters. I may be biased since I love the 90's aesthetic, but I really hate how all the characters faces have become so much more angular. It's just really off-putting to see these originally really attractive characters become much less easy on the eyes over the years.

It's not that I think they should've stuck with exactly the same style, I just wanted the characters to actually look appealing. I love cell animation, but I totally understand the switch to digital. In fact, I really liked how things looked in the early 300s, right at the beginning of the switch. However, once they started adding weird hair gradients, everything went downhill.

This goes to show that having a series go on for a long time can be both a blessing and a curse. I'm very happy I have almost an endless stream of content from my current favorite piece of media, but I'm also sad to see things change for the worse over time.

nah I don't really care that much
Even if I prefer season 2's design for Hinagiku it doesn't really bother me that the design changes since her character stays the same

I think anime art was getting better until they got lazy all of a sudden and they now just spit out characters with zero depth and add random CGI.

The designs in the middle look really nice, actually.

It would feel weird and 'off' if it happened during an anime. If it's a different show - an OVA, a new season - I'll take it as an oppurtunity to explore and stretch the ideas.

like this?

Also, another show I really noticed the art change, especially in the manga, is Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I really like the change here though:

Detective Conan just has terrible art direction in general. The individual mysteries were fucking rad, but I can't stomach the character designs.
