We hear on MAL time and again people say that "in an ideal world, 5 should be the average score of people." This may seem correct at first as 5 is the score right at middle. But think just a little and we can understand how stupid that is. Average score being 5 mean that you have seen equal amount of good and bad anime, but who actually does that? In selecting an anime to watch, we choose ones which seem more interesting and likely also see its score and reviews to see if it is actually good or not. Thus we are much more likely to watch good anime. Many people, like me, dont even watch seasonal anime, so it is especially so. If a show is so bad you are going to give it a score less than 4, normal person will immediately drop it in few episodes, helping the average score a person give to rise Thus average score being around 7.5 is normal, and we should use that as a point to judge if a person is over scoring or under scoring animes What do you guys think. I want to hear as many opinions as possible |

Yes, top heavy lists are the natural way of doing things, but some other things to note: -"Good and bad anime" isn't so black and white -You can reasonably make a rating system that looks like a nice gauss curve, where 5 is the average from what you've seen (something which might look better at 999 anime completed than at 24) |

No, but I do believe more people need to use the full range of available ratings. When I see someone with an average score of 8 or more, I find it difficult to have any faith in their ratings; sure, it's possible that they just might have managed to only watch anime that they thought were excellent, but it's not likely. But having an average score of 5 would require watching a lot of shit, which kind of defeats the hobby. I think a range between 6 and 7 is reasonable, probably topping out at 7.5. But I did vote 'Yes' just to make it a perfect 50-50 split. Edit: tfw a few seconds later people just vote willy-nilly and ruin all your hard work |

No. In fact, there's really no score that goes in between 1 and 10 while leaving an equal amount of numbers on both sides of the spectrum. This scale would be imbalanced with an average score. We should change 5 to weak and 4 to bad. |

Yeah. It's more logical for a person's score to be above 5 (like 6 or 7) on average and their graph of ratings to be skewed to the top half of the scale (6-10), because naturally people are going to watch more of what they enjoy and less of what they don't. Sometimes just avoiding what they don't like altogether. |

So 5.5 would be the better average in this case. But if we're going solely based off of the rating scale then 6 would seem the better average because rounding up seems pretty standard mathematically. As with all threads relating to this topic I think people should rate how they want since that's going to happen anyway. |

Okay first of all, the reason 7.5 is the average is because people are stupid and have bad taste, and don't rate everything 2's or 3's except for Evangelion. Second off, 5 is not a good average. 5 as an average gives you five scores that are positive but only four scores that are negative. So be smart and do what I do and have 1-5 as negative and 6-10 as positive. But don't actually do that, I want to feel like I'm smarter then you. DecimoXX said: Salokannel2 said: According to http://graph.anime.plus which tracks MAL user's scores, the average on MAL is 6.9 So people in mal are quite critical on rating anime. Its off topic but thats a good thing right? 6.92 is an extremely high "anime is above average" which is what any medium will most likely have. It has nothing to do with critical thinking. Just how people perceive things. Some people give 10's to everything, some people are harsh as fuck and will give a 1/10 if they hear engrish or something. |

I think anyone who tries to tell someone what their score should be is an idiot. Everyone's free to rate however they like. There's no right or wrong way to do it. If you've got a mean score that's sky high, so be it. If your mean score is dirt low, let it be also. Who's to judge what a person's score should or should not be? You've gotta be a real cocky kind of jackass to think like that. |

I believe that 5.5 should be the average since it's the mean of the scale. People are biased towards watching anime they already expect to enjoy, but since anime outside of their taste generally isn't that much worse they don't downvote it enough to counter its fans so everything gets skewed upwards. If you only watch anime that you think will be a 5 or above and everyone else does the same but everyone watches different anime then the people the anime would be a 4 or lower to haven't watched or scored it while the people who do like it have given it a higher score. I don't disagree that this would make sense, but it does bring scores closer together and 50% of anime are rated between 6.54 and 7.60 which is a very tight margin for so many anime to be rated between. |

5.5 is the mean and median average although I get the reasoning that as there are over 10k anime out there we can say that we've only decided to see the best out of the 10k+ out there to justify a high average score. Of course a counter to this kind of reasoning would be that since we've seen such a small percentage that we can't really know what an average out of the 10k+ should be but whatever it's your list |
