Anime endings that changed your rating in a good/bad way? Why?

So I made the same thread yesterday and it got quite some attention, but it got deleted because of simple listing. Reason why I'm creating this thread again is because I liked the previous one, it was giving me new animes to add to my Plan to Watch list. It was also fun to read everyones opinion on different endings. So before I start, please state your reason WHY the ending changed your rating so it wont get deleted again.

For me personally, the ending of Death Note changed it from a 9 to 10. The first half was amazing in my opinion, but the second arc felt worse because

This has happened to me where a few series have stunned me with their endings. I'm saying this stuff as if you haven't seen the series (I haven't looked at your list to check)

A currently airing series called "Erased" Just got better as the episodes progressed, now with only 2 episodes left to air, I'm excited for the ending.

I agree with you on Death Note, but I personally wouldn't give it a 10, a great anime none the less.

I've said this in another post but it's usually (Not limited to) one episode, quote, or something similar that gets me to fall in love with a series, sometimes it can just be the series as a whole that I love.

School Days, a very popular anime, in the good and bad sense. It's ending didn't really phase me (mostly because I had already played the game, gotten all endings, and knew what to expect), I found that anime bearable, and gave it a 7, but it's different for everyone.

Another, An awesome Horror anime (If you're into gore check it out) The ending was spectacular and didn't leave me wondering anything too major, a nice complete ending, not to mention the series has an awesome plot.

Omamori Himari, has some cool fight scenes, harem echhi, I liked the plot (Not the best in the world, but I liked the ending. Not much to say. Lots of Echhi and Harem anime have abrupt and incomplete "Suddenly" endings where the whole series isn't tied up (This doesn't really matter if the series has a thin plot)

Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou), the series was very funny, the ending nearly got me (Let's just say I was particularly sad at some parts), but that last episode(s) (It's been a while since I watched it, I'm just gonna do my best) added to my already huge love of the series.

Mirai Nikki, The ending of the series at self leaves a pretty big cliff hanger, and a confused audience, the series has a few plot twists but it was and awesome show to watch. For a complete ending, viewers would need to watch Mirai Nikki Redail as it continues from the main series, tying it up with a satisfying, complete ending.

Of course, there are many others, these are just a few that I thought of off the top my head, hope this was enough, :D

Eh, the Mods should just delete the listing replies. The first page, at least, had full replies which explained why.

Lowered ratings :-

Toradora - the last two episodes didn't sit well with me. They were just OTT, and I didn't like the way it ended, even with the after credits scene. A lot of it felt like it came out of nowhere.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - it felt like there was supposed to be one more episode to wrap things up, but they decided to just clap and chant 'congratulations' and finish the series with everything still up in the air. Kinda felt like I'd gotten trolled.

Charlotte - everything had been getting worse towards the end, but the last episode especially was so ridiculously rushed. It's no exaggeration to say they could have made a second season based around the premise of the last episode. Rather than rushing to wrap the story up in a single cour, they really should have went with 2-cours.

Akame ga Kill - anime original and felt really rushed, too. It also had the issue of wrapping the story up in the last 2-3 episodes when it could have went on a little longer.

Increased ratings :-

Spice and Wolf S2. I loved the growing relationship between Lawrence and Holo, and the way the season ended felt really good. There was significant development between the two of them, and you could tell they'd grown since the start of their journey.

LH S2 - I suffered through most of the second season of LH; it really failed in most areas. The last ~6 episodes really picked it up though. They left it on a better note than what it had been up until that point. The pace picked up and actually got somewhere without dragging everything out like all the previous arcs had done.

Code Geass R2 - the middle and end of this season was a rollercoaster of twists and turns. Absolutely loved it. Never really knew what to expect; I'd found myself questioning the actions of what happened in one episode, thinking it stupid and inane, but they would be explained in the next and suddenly everything would fall into place.

OK, here we go again:

Endings who raised the score:

FMAB - Was satisfying and conclusive, and overall good. Raised the socre from 9 to 10.

Endings who dropped the score:

Akame ga Kill - 7 to 6 due how bad the original ending was. The rest of the series was enjoyable, but the last five episodes were a disaster.

Claymore - Same reason to AgK (bad original ending). From 8 to 7.

Soul Eater - Another bad original ending. The courage punch made the series go from 8 to 7.

Gangsta - The ending was so unclear andsolve too few things I dropped the score from 7 to 6. The series started to went bad since episode 9 anyway.

I dropped the score on Mai Hime from 9/10 to barely 8.
Cause in the last episode they changed whole atmosphere of the last arc. Pretty much like in Naruto after Pain arc

Aria The Origination- The anime itself was superb but it had its ups and downs. But then the last episode occurred and it made realise how much I loved the characters. It was easy to guess what the last episode was going to be but the way they did it made me feel so heart broken that it finished and in the end I just wanted more. Raised from 9 to 10.

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki chan- This was a mediocre series. That is, it was a mediocre series until the second last arc and final episode occurred. As much as I love the Haruhi franchise and SoL anime, I was about to put this spin off on hold indefinitely until someone told me that I stopped right before it got good. It turned an anime from 6 to a 9 but due to balancing it turned out as 7.5. The amount of character that is given to Nagato by giving her less character is insane.

For the reverse, Robotics; Notes to me was a pretty good anime but then the ending occurred and basically turned it from pretty good to severely underwhelming due to the lack of tension felt in the last fight. It tried to over dramatise it and then just turns the climax into an anit climax resulting in a drop 7 to a 6

Another one is the final movie of Sora no Otoshimono, Eternal my Master. It turned a series which I rated from 7-8.5 (depending on the season) into a flat out 4 due to the suddenness of the scenario it puts the viewer in and then the randomness of the episode that insues. It was basically the killing of every character just because they could. It was such a let down that I had to go read the manga just to figure out what the heck was happening.
And then I saw the amazing ending of the manga which pushed the series from 7.5 to 8.5 for me...

I heard Soul Eater had one of the worst endings in anime history, is this true or the work of overexaggerating people? :P

I also agree with Akame, felt really rushed towards the end..

Soul Eater ending was very bad. The antagonists are pretty much forgotten, the way to defeat the final boss was anti climatic and looks like an asspull and the final scene left the things unclear.

Really stupid ending to a decent series.

Let's add Boku Dake in the drop score endings list. The series was decent and entertaining (it has it's flaws, but it wasn't that bad). However, the rush of the last 10 episodes and the uncleared plot holes made the series scores drop from a 7 to a 5 (4,5 in my case, but since MAL doesn`t have that...)

Ha, Boku Dake would have been in everyone's post had this thread been made after it finished airing lol. Don't think I've seen an anime fall down so far because of the ending.

There have been way bigger drops than that. So far Erased has gone down 0.25 from the last episode alone. Gangsta dropped like 0.51 iirc lol (actually it's all the way to 0.64 if you count today)

Oh I didn't mean in terms of overall score, I meant my personal enjoyment of a series dropping down hard because of the ending.

I'm surprised at that Gangsta rating though. I know it was somewhat lacklustre but that's a hefty drop for an episode lol.

Honestly most shows that have an actual ending tend to make me bump up the score a bit. Conclusive/Simiconclusive endings are a rare thing in this sea of partial adaptations and i like my stories to have an ending. There are a few exceptions. When an ending seems to come out of nowhere or i feel doesn't fit the series it can lower my score.

2 examples of this are

Soul Eater - You don't end a battle shounen series that is all about getting stronger and power ups with a damn "courage punch"

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - When i'm watching a sci-fi space opera i like my series to resolved with science. Not magic that they try to call science.

I'm not that surprised about Gangsta dropping that far. The ending was a cliffhanger who didn't solve any plot point, and the execution of the last 4 episodes, plus the introduction of a large cast of characters who saturated the series just made it the perfect trainwreck.

The fact that Manglobe dissapeared that year didn't help the things very much.

Having read the manga of ERASED, I had to sadly drop it from a fine 8 to a marginal 6. It was all so rushed. Should have been better if they had a few more episodes to complete the ending instead of a bad original one.

Lots of times. Tasogare Otome Amnesia, Death Note, Soul Eater and Code Geass are what I think negatively handles the climax/epilogue when I read this topic.

As for good examples, Tokyo Ravens and White Album 2.

As with everyone else... the ending to Erased was quite disappointing. It could've been the next big thing but boy, did it crash and burn. The anime ending was even more anticlimactic than the manga.

Endings that improved an anime:
- code geass r2
- shinsekai yori
- Natsume yuujinchou shi
* wanna note that the above three anime were pretty fantastic anyways but the ending just clinched it.

Endings that made an anime worse:
- Erased
- angel beats!

I think that the ending of Death Note really improved the anime, most viewers hate the ending but I think that it was really fitting. The second half was a disappointment but the ending was really good.
The same goes for Princess Tutu, the ending was great and bittersweet.

Some bad endings that really lowered the score:
-The ending of Gankutsuou lowered the score from a 8 to a 6,5 for me, that was one of the most stupid things I've ever seen.
-I already mentioned Code Geass
-Monster went from a 9,5 to a 9, because of the open ending, still an awesome anime though.
-The ending of Berserk was... unexpected and very original, but it did NOT increase the score for the anime, certainly not.

The Tatami Galaxy's ending brought it up from a 8 or 9 to a 10/10 potential greatest anime of all time. It pretends to be an episodic series, then the final two episodes flip all of that on its head and deconstruct and reconstruct Watashi's world in the most satisfying and moving way imaginable.

I agree that Yume is best girl, but as far as open endings go, I think Grimgar did well. They shouldn't explain how the characters entered that world because it doesn't matter. Grimgar was always character-driven and not plot-driven, so 'explaining' that sort of irrelevant background stuff would just be a tacky waste of time. Ranta's escape was kinda bullshit though.

Even if it gets a second season your questions will still remain lol. Probably season 3 also.
The LN is slow but the action gets better in Vol4+ though and they start to think about their own world. And for your ship

LOL That's why if it does get a second season, I won't watch it. Too much time wasted, too many questions unanswered. I'm a fast paced kinda person unless it's Gintama it's SoL, shoujo or Romance. :V

meh. I already had this argument with another person xD
I know it's character driven and bla bla, but I rarely watch rpg kind of animu, so I wanted to know how they would handle the trapped-in-a-game theme, that's why I started watching it anyway.. so it's fair that I'd be pissed disappointed that I didn't get answers since Grimgar was promising at the start. But that's just me and my expectations. :/ .... and like what I said above:"I'm a fast paced kinda person unless it's Gintama it's SoL, shoujo or Romance.

I think Toradora had the potential for an 8, but the way it ended with the last few episodes, made me decide on 7 instead. It's not that it's a bad ending... it's just playing it really safe and lacks impact.

Same thing goes for Angel Beats. It had the potential for an amazing ending, but then the post-credits scene ruined it.

Raised:
Concrete Revolutio prior to the 2nd half was a 6/10 in my opinion. To be fair though, it wasn't until the very end where I decided to the raise the score. (6 to 7)

Lowered:
Charlotte's ending was a rushed mess in my opinion. To be fair though, the whole "arc" near the end would've dropped the series anyway. (I marathoned this, but if the ending weren't bad I would've given it like a 5; dropped the score to 4/10)
The same could also be said for Comet Lucifer (the last 2 episodes made me drop the score by 3 points, from a 6 to a 3; damn that's a big blow).
Bubuki Buranki's ending made no fucking sense and didn't solve anything in a satisfying manner. (7 to 6)
Akame ga Kill's ending is pretty much like Bubuki Buranki's in terms of my opinion on it. I didn't even like the series to begin with, but the ending soured it further. (3 to 2)
Mahoromatic 2's ending is infamous among those who watched the series. The sequel was doing fairly well, up until the last few episodes. Gainax Ending, to leave it at that. (9 to 8)

Gangsta is another case where the show's score would've dropped anyway as the final arc was far weaker compared to the rest, but the inconclusive ending soured the experience. I felt that this show was still pretty good however, thus I didn't drop it farther than a 7. (About 8 to 7)

Warning: FMA:B spoilers ahead!

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. In a bad way.

A cheerful "happily ever after", "married and had kids" generic ending did not fit the show and Edward Elric did not, in any way, shape or form deserve such a joyous finale.

I've never watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist, but if the ending is much darker, then it's already a better anime than Brotherhood.

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai. It's not so much that the ending itself changed my rating, but that the show started off unwatchable but got progressively better. The last 2 episodes alone were enough to make up for the train-wreck of an introduction.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Next. To be fair, I already didn't like the second season as much as the first because I felt as if the writers forgot everything that made the first season great. Then they threw on a horrible ending that felt like a slap in the face to anyone who enjoyed the series. The moral of the first season: It's okay to be a social misfit. The moral of the second season: If you're not good at making friends you don't deserve happiness.

THIS! I could already tell the ending was going to suck seeing as the second to last episode was bleh.

one that lowered the score for me was death note from a 10 to 9. WHYY. it was still good thoh.

The final episode of Toradora changed my rating from a 9 to 8. The show as a whole was quite good, but I wasn't quite a fan of how it all ended.

Easy answer with the good ending... It'll be Code Geass.
That ending that took me breathless and

is one scene that moved me a lot.

For the bad ending, It'll be Rokka no Yuusha.

No ending has me raging with that

It ruined what the show is going for, tbh.

Gankutsuou. It went from a 10/10 to an 8/10 because of the last two episodes. I loved everything about it except the ending. It was different from the book's ending and the count >>>>>>>>>>>> albert which made the ending even worse.

Bad way:
-Fate/Stay Night UBW
-Death Note (the last 3rd, really)
-Akame ga Kill (anime only)
-Rokka no Yuusha (Fuck the cow-girl)
-Parasyte
The list keeps going.

Good way:
-Code Geass
-Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Far too few series receive conclusions, so this one is minimal.

The ending is important. It gives a context to all that happened before. It can render it pointless, or make all the bad stuff better.

BTOOOM and Parasyte's ending made me furious. Parasyte ended with a horrible, silly monologue. BTOOOM just stopped. What kind of ending are these? They only emphasized that all what happened before was, indeed, crap.

I feel the same way, I hate to say. I was prepared to give 'Death Note' a perfect score but dropped a point as a result of the ending and the second arc as a whole. I've dropped a point or two for some awesome anime that end abruptly in order to set up a second season, without that season ever arriving. 'Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero' and 'Btooom!' fall into that category, for example, as the story is left largely unresolved and therefore with significant plot holes and speculation that will likely never be answered.
