The truth has finally been revealed : I am not an anime fan! ;o As far as I understand, animemaru is a humorous website. While some classifications derive their humor from their truth value, this classification has more humor value than truth value. Riki_Oh said: Lol those poll results. Looks like mal users are padding out their lists with OVAs. Time watched is all that matters Hentai OVAs are a good way to pad out your "anime watched" list. Most other OVAs are associated with some longer anime. As a bonus, it offends moralfags. TheMoonServant said: Even after reading @Z-Dante link, I still can't understand who I am nor who otaku actually is, but I personally think I'd have to call myself a weeb (and I dunno if it's bad or not) In japanese, the word "otaku" means roughly the same thing as english words "geek" or "nerd". The definition would be something like "a person who has a hobby that isn't sports". You can add adjectives to the word to clarify which exact hobby a person has, like "train otaku" or "anime otaku". A stereotypical otaku is a fat NEET hikkikomori anime otaku, but they are, most likely, a minority - while a NEET or hikkikomori probably has a lot of time for anime, and is likely to be an anime otaku, it doesn't work the other way around. In the west, "otaku" means "anime otaku" (because only people who watch anime are likely to know the word "otaku", unlike, say, "ninja" or "bonsai"). And a lot of people will argue how obsessed you have to be to count as otaku. Most sources I've seen claim that "weeb" or "weaboo" is an english term of abuse, that means "person who isn't patriotic enough and has any degree of liking anything japanese". Using the term marks the user as a patriot. Patriots are evil, stay away from them. Relinquished- said: I have a better question- why fuck are we measuring it in the first place? O_O These kinds of measurement are usually compared to penis size measurements. I've never seen anybody actually comparing their penis sizes, but it's supposed to matter to us males. Otaku level is for people who can't compete in skyscraper height. |

Well it doesn't matter to me how many shows they have completed or how many days they have seen of anime (since some people prefer watching anime with 12 or 13 episodes). I usually think otaku means you really have a passion of liking anime &/or manga (just don't go extreme of liking this hobby of yours). |

I have a lot of anime completed but not too much time watched. My average is less than 2 hours per anime. The Japanese definition of an otaku is anyone with a strong obsession with a certain thing (this crosses over a bit with high functioning autism). I personally think the time spent on a hobby is a better indicator of how obsessed someone is with it than an arbitrary measurement of "things done" in that hobby. If someone was obsessed with model trains would you rather measure their obsession by how much money they spent on them and how much time they spent building them or just by how many models they own? For another example, someone could own 1,000 Pokemon cards that they bought for cheap and rarely use and someone else could own 500 Pokemon cards that they spent a lot of money on, keep in protective cases, and frequently battle with other players. It's obvious who is the more obsessed fan here. |

I'd say completed anime is the more important number, but I don't think there's such thing as a "balanced" or "unbalanced" list, it's just about what you like to watch the most. A lot of people seem to look down on anything that isn't a tv series as just "list padding", but there's a whole other world of animation that you don't get to see (or at least not very often) on tv series. Hardcore otaku. I just have to commit a few public indecency crimes to raise my level. |

I've never filled out my list properly from the moment I joined... I basically threw all the anime I could remember watching on my list from the get go... I also don't come on here and add things right as I'm watching it, usually takes me a day, maybe a week to get around to that. I won't lie, I'm mostly here for forum chat because there don't seem to be many decent anime forums anymore. I don't have enough time to give a crap about my "count" or "hours watched"... besides the fact I'm too erratic with what I watch, I get bored with so much so fast and jump to something new or rewatch something, can't keep up with that shit ^^; |

Where is the don't care option. Why on earth should you even care how many titles or how much time someone has spent on anime. And why should it be measured by such linear methods. Either you are or you are not, it is based on how you view yourself. |

Ehh...honestly, this sort of thing shouldn't even matter. If you enjoy watching anime, you watch it and add it on your list. Shouldn't matter how many titles you watched or how many days you have watched since we all just share our love for anime. Can't that just be enough lol last time no one really gives two craps about being otaku masters...this is the real world we live in. Not the pokemon world. Maybe otaku masters live in separate worlds which would also explain how they are able to finish so many series in such a short amount of time. I believe this supports my hypothesis of how otakus have magical powers and only when you have reached a certain number you can achieve this power. |

Err...Why would you want to in the first place...Although if the question is for fun, then I'd say the amount of anime completed. I personally feel like I've watched a small amount of anime because of the longer series I enjoy watching, thus I have less completed anime. I just feel like, completing more gives you a broader sense of things...meanwhile Instead of watching Naruto's fillers, that explain the same thing OVER and OVER...I could have completed 20 other different anime, LOL. |

@plasma38 The first chart looks legit. The deepest non-category I've actually completed is Neo Ranga (early Tier 5), gotta love the friendly neighborhood Godzilla. Obscure H anime and music videos are deeper though, but still level 5. I deliberately looked up some really old hentai, good stuff. Actually looking up all my list there and adding things sounds like too much trouble. The second chart is pretty useless. LogH should be somewhere on level 4, along with the rest of the potentially good anime I am not touching any time soon (I've seen S.E. Lain and EoE, by the way) But why the hell is Symphogear (one of the better and more accessible stuff) deeper than layer 5 (anime I'm scared of)?! Frankly, moe isn't that deep, it's just for mature people like me. Not that those shows are all that moe. |

Who cares, if you watch anime just to have a fancy list you should do something better with your life, there is no user ranking on MAL and you're not a better person if you have that many more animes than this and that, or what anime you've watched, like the "elitist" crap. |

@flannan I don't think that lotgh is so extreme in terms of power level. It is basically gundam with less mecha and more politics. And I disagree on idol anime. These are on the otaku meter pretty high. Look how hyper successful these idol anime are and how dedicated those fans are. They spend the most money, go to concerts, buy all the idol anime soundtracks (look at the jap charts) and put out lots of money for mech. These are pretty obsessed/maniac ppl. For example love live second season has 67k units sold with a 97% on blu ray. This shows that idol fans are pretty invested and spend the extra money on blu ray. the blu ray percentage is a (one)good indicator how involed those ppl are, They spend more for blu ray and have a blu ray player in the first place, cause they often buy other anime. |

Well for me, I don't have a high count of anime or days, but I do have more anime than days, I think. I joined MAL like last month but I've watched anime on and off for a few years. So naturally, when I joined, I put in all the anime that I could remember that I watched. |

>people still don't in 2016 know the meaning of "otaku" >people still don't in 2016 know otaku can mean two things 1. Unhealthy obsession of anything does not apply to anime 2. A subculture in Japan which does not have to imply otaku in nuance, but is generally the main populace of Japanese anime fans and the culture around that |

If you fit that criteria and want to call yourself that (yeah it's a negative term too), sure ok. That said, there's absolutely no need to label yourself bro. well like... I'm not obsessed with Japanese culture, but I tried once learning the language (through a website), but I stopped.. However, I'm kinda obsessed with anime. If it's a negative term.. how come I don't feel bad whenever a friend calls me weeb? :D In the same way people don't feel bad when they call themselves otakus. Then again most of them probably don't even know what the word means. But I still don't understand, why is it a negative term, if people aren't annoyed with it? Well, excluding some facts that I saw in pretty lots of anime an MC being called Otaku or NEET, but I don't understand, how can that be a bad thing to be an "Otaku" for JAPANESE people, I mean, anime is what they see every day ...Uhh. You maybe want to look up the real definition of otaku (no, it's not "anime fan"). And the real definition of neet, too. And learn a little about japan and anime maybe... ... ... You're new here ain'tcha. |
