We have seen many instances where Gon could have killed someone but either chose not to, or by some strange circumstance was unable to deliver the final blow.

Obviously this is intentional by the author, but why won't he let Gon kill someone? Would this cross the manga from a Shonen into a Seinen?

Naruto killed
I guess that makes Naruto a Seinen, huh?

Ichigo killed
I guess that makes Bleach a Seinen, huh?

Goku has killed numerous characters. I guess that makes Dragon Ball a Seinen, huh?

The protagonist killing another character has nothing to do with something being Shounen or Seinen. It's just a demographic. Togashi might not let Gon kill anyone because Gon is simply the kind of boy who would not kill anyone - and if he did, it would have consequences on his psychology.
I'm a douche. Deal with it.

I never considered him to be a "Pure" character, to be honest.

Gon is most definitely a pure character but not pure as in would never kill someone in fact I believe Gons "pureness" pushes him to harbor more hatred/malifice than Killua if its for revenge.

Anyway one of the biggest themes of HxH is the contrast between Gon's light and Killuas dark.

Gon is not pure, in chimera ants he will be filled with bloodlust and desire for revenge, he even hurts Killua feelings to get it. Keep watching this new arc...

It's part of the journey of a main character. Yusuke didn't kill another human for the longest time (if at all... need to brush up on my YYH). So perhaps that makes Gon a bit more pure, that he hesitates to kill even when something it not human. But he is by no means completely pure, and the rest of this arc will show you his colors in regards to this topic.

Ditto. For me, he's just self-deluded. He still lives in his own little fantasy world. He's still very much a kid. He lacks experience, and therefore, he can appear at times 'priggish'. But we will see that Gon is probably the most hypocritical character in the series :P he completely reverses. He just needs a little 'baptism'.

You forget that in his latest fight (ep 82) Gon clearly intended his attack to be
so this thread has arrived a bit late in the game.

Gon's characterisation has always been more complex than simply 'killing is bad' and his code of ethics has never been the modern orthodox, eg. his instant acceptance of Killua, an assassin. Though it is true that it may be hard to sell an unrepentant mass-murderer as a main character for Jump.

Because it's Togashi's story and Togashi's character and that's what he wanted to write.

That's why.

He does become pretty hypocritical at one point. Whether he'll reprove himself or become a darker character for it is yet to be seen.

What I want to know is why people are borderline-obsessed with removing a character's purity. It's like everyone thinks a character can't stay in the right, that they somehow have to become dark or some anti-hero.

I for one would like to see a straight-up traditional hero played out a bit more realistically (that is, deconstructed and reconstructed). I'd be interested in watching that. I think Gon still has the potential for it, seeing that he's a kid and has plenty of time to change himself, but playing the trope that way seems pretty rare, so I'll be surprised if it happens.

XD jajajajajajaajajajaja
Gon is probably one of the best Shonen "heroes" but definitely is darker than Luffy, Ichigo, natsu, goku and Naruto
Gon is a a kid BUT he IS NOT PURE HE IS YOUNG AND WEAK, and thats the reason why you will never see Gon defeating all the villains.

pd: at the end of the story Naruto is the friend of the villain
Everyone is immortal in One Piece
Ichigo is a joke
Goku try to forgive Frieza 2 times
Gintama: "The blade is not to cut down your enemies
Nor is it to cut away your own weakness
A sword isnt meant to protect your body
A sword is meant for protecting your soul"

He's pretty much stopped being pure since episode 35. Or 68. Your pick.

He is not pure , I'd say he is gray leaning more to the black side at many times. Remember when Zepile said that gon does not care about what is right and what is wrong, Wing said that he has awakened monsters, It seems that you are still far away to understand that he is not a pure character, maybe you are still in greed island I guess.

I know this was written last year, but idk how anyone can think not killing = pure. Whenever someone claims Gon's so pure or innocent....Are we even watching the same show? Cause he's anything but that.

This was last year, I doubt anyone is thinking that now.
