SAO's art is gorgeous. The character's facial features have nice proportions and are nice to look at. Though i can see some slight similarities, it's still quite surprising to see that Working! and SAO share the same anime character designer.

Oh no don't encourage A-1 Pictures.

Well I don't know about best but Gankutsuou's visuals are special to me.

Oh I really need to watch Redline.
It's been on my mental PTW forever.

Yu Yu hakusho because it's the first of it's kinda and I love Yusuke Urameshi
Yu Yu Hakusho was not the first of it's kind, it's a shounen and it started airing in 1992, the first shounen I ever saw was Dragon Ball which started in 1986 and I'm pretty confident that it wasn't the first shounen either since anime has been around since the 60s.

I meant it's story was around the first of his kind. You know Kid hunts down demons thing.
Nope it wasn't the first to do that either. I'm not saying it's not good, but there was really nothing innovative about that show.

Oh dang now i like noobish. Maybe nostalgia

The best art I've seen is in Bakemonogatari. It's just.... how to say it, different? Guilty Crown comes in at a close second. I'll also include Redline as it was also very different from your norm.

I read "very different from your norm as: very different from your mom." -- Anyways, on topic, Samurai Champloo, Spirited Away, and FLCL immediately come into mind.

As for unique style? I thought Casshern sins had an awesome style that really stood out, and was just cool to me. Reason? I'm not too sure, it was just cool. Some people use it as an excuse to hate the show, but I love it. I think it makes the show truly unique.

Someone else mentioned Redline- I've been planning to watch that for a while now, and I have to get to it because the art really does look sick.

Isn't Casshern sins one of those that was based on an older anime and crossed older art with newer animation.

Interesting art. Wouldn't call it "good". Variety is the spice of life, after all.

First 2 look like a rotoscope. It has a large variety of different styles mate but a lot of the images I want to show will get me banned quickly.

Just finished watching Wolf Children, and hands down that movie has best scenery art and animation out of all the anime i've watched so far. Not so much character design but the background art is impecable to anything else i've seen.

Everyone has their own tastes in art, some like simplistic design, some like overly detailed. Personally i can live with either.

The best Artwork ever - Vampire Hunger D - Bloodlust - simply because it's done by Yoshitaka Amano (the guy behind ff's character designs) simply amazing.

The best animation goes to Macross Sayonara no Tsubasa - regardless of how crap it is the blu ray is mindblowing

Redline was intensely crap by the way

Kara no kyoukai or fate zero. Really not sure which one I preferred more. Both were amazing, Fate/Zero just because it looked pretty as hell, shiny/colorful/so on. Kara no Kyoukai for the detail more than anything. Remember seeing books with lines to show each page(well, some pages) and such sometimes. Was just awesome.

Another - It had a dark feel to it that suited the anime so well, really made me aware that I was viewing a horror anime.

Fate/Zero - Everything just blended so well and the colours really worked to bring out the character's ideals like how the gold on Gilgamesh complimented his arrogant personality.

Kara no Kyoukai - There was just so much detail throughout the films especially during the fight scenes, the artwork was simply stunning.

Steins;Gate - The artwork was unique, the colouring and designs were very appealing to me personally and it just felt like something I could look at for hours without growing tired.

Haven't see a ton of newer stuff but;
Macross Frontier - Best by far, everything is done so well, especially the movies
Redline - You can tell the incredible amount of work put into this, didn't like the style at first but loved it by the end.
Macross DYRL - It amazes me how great this still looks after 30 years
Bakemonogatari - Just started it, but so far have been very impressed by the eye candy

Probably something like Revolutionary Girl Utena. The art style and how it's used is absolutely essential to the story this show tells. I'm not really one to let art/animation be a defining factor in my impression of a series, but Utena stands tall for me.

I agree with Jin Roh and GITS 1995 movie. They do have incredible artwork and char design. But the 2000 GITS SAC is a step down-grade compares to the original movie in terms of char designs and art, as well as over-used cheap CGI. I'm disappointed in you Production IG! :(

I did like the CG in SAC. It's pretty good (speciallly in the tachikoma in fast paced actions scenes), at least in comparison. I kinda a agree with art part: it has some beautiful effects in backgrounds and in the action scenes, but being from '95, it doesn't look as clean and sharp as SAC.
As for char designs, aside from Motoko, the rest of the cast looks pretty much the same... maybe cleaner (the 10 year difference at work). The movie's definitely aged well for sure.

Haha touchè
To this day, I'm still wondering why did they put that there. So out of place. My theory is that while Kamiyama wasn't looking some troll animator slipped that there, too late for the team to remove it.
There's another one in the first chapter of the first season.
But let's not let some fanservice moments invalidate the whole char design of the show.

Fate/Zero

Of all people to say this, it's you? Oh boy.

Also, I'd say probably the Monogatari series, Panty and Stocking w/ Garterbelt, and maybe FLCL. Each of these is pretty unique, and consistently good. I can't remember a time in any of these shows (even in Bakemonogatari when the characters just talked and talked and didn't stop talking) when I could take my eyes off of the screen.

Edit: I totally forgot Redline. To quote my favourite anime review guy, "it can only be described as sexual intercourse with your eyes."

I'm surprised that I'm one of the few who picked ef as the one with the best art. So I guess I'm kinda wrong with that?

I mean, I've seen people talking about Bakemonogatari (same director as ef), and a lot others talking about "strange" animation styles and quite unusual artistic choices... So I'm wondering if ef is simply too much overrated on that point of view.

I mean, I kinda get chills in scenes like this one:

She literally looks like a completely different character. I hope she at least usually has twin tails in the manga. Don't even get me started on the glasses girl....

I normally say that art isn't a big deal for me. But, man, this kind of makes me rethink things.

That's how Anime should be.

Atleast they're not attempting and failing to meet the Manga quality like most adaptations do.

They're not even even trying.
