So I've hated rap for quite a while now, being an avid metal fan. But recently I had a change in opinion after hearing this artist(I'm sure some of you might know) named Immortal Technique.

If you don't know who I'm talking about here's a song from him, its pretty deep. (warning:lyrics are pretty explicit)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qggxTtnKTMo

He was the first rap artist that I've heard that seemed "real." His lyrics are primarily about reality and how bad our society has become, politic tensions, etc.. Instead of rapping about bitches, money, cars or whatever else the fuck people don't really care about. Not saying there aren't other rappers like him, just happened to be him that changed my opinion.

Anyways, feel free to comment on the artist(or ones like him) or about an incident that effected you in the same light.

No.

I'm going to let you in on something, dude:
There is hip-hop out there that's actually much better than Immoral Technique.

Ha, I knew what song that would be before even clicking. Both Revolutionary Vol. 1 & 2 are amazing albums. Hopefully, this will lead to you checking out more hip-hop music as Immortal Technique is far from being the only guy putting out quality music in the genre. Mainstream vs 'underground' rap is no different from mainstream vs 'underground' metal.

Meh...he is alright. Ive changed from music in kind of similar way, i used listen to rap/hip-hop all the time, but now i could really care less. I prefer music without vocals now...i listen to alot of crazy techno shit, also prefer video game OST's and such.

I just listen to anything that sounds cool. It's not like I stick with a specific style/artist. You probably do the same, you just didn't realize until now.

Well of course I don't stick to a specific genre, though I do primarily listen to metal, I'm a big fan of trance music, progressive rock, neo-classical, etc.

My post is related just specifically to hip-hop/rap(hince paradigm shift of a music genre).

If you want another decent rap artist, I'd suggest Cunninlynguists' album "Southernunderground." It may not be political or whatnot, but the lyrics give you something to think about. (Atleast for me.)

I still prefer rock to rap. All of it. My own tastes.
And if having to listen to something along the vein, breakcore would be my preference instead of hip-hop.

Me, in my opinion rap took a downturn as soon as gangsta rap crap like Tupac, N.W.A., Dr. Dre, and other atrocities came around. Back when it was sugarhill gang, and not Snoop Dog. And the kids nowadays are like "omg u don't kno rap, it's not all that mainstream stuff that sucks like Soulja Boy, listen to some real rap like Tupac". Yeah, I had relatives who listened to Tupac when I was a little kid, and I hated it. And I still do. So don't try to convince me to love your pile of shit.

I don't like "indie hip-hop" like MF DOOM, I don't like "early rap" like Tupac, I don't like "good exception to the rule mainstream hip-hop" like Outkast.
I don't know how many times I've been called a racist, now nothing ignorant about rap, know nothing about music, shit taste, neg repped, ect., at other forums, for saying these things.

Of course these were the same people who were saying that anyone who doesn't support Obama is a racist, and how much we finally need a combo breaker black president, but anyone would say Hillary is not inferior for being a woman, and decries such sayings is sexist, is a racist Obama hating feminazi bulldyke. And in fact, I think some people think attacking hypermasculinity, is racist, because most black people are (supposed)to be hypermasculine, amirite?

You know what, indie hip-hop is better than mainstream hip-hop. And true old school hip-hop is better than gangsta rap. But that doesn't mean I like it. And I DO listen to lots of different genres of music. And I have loads of rap I have given a chance in my last.fm charts. But I am not convinced any less that I do not like rap.

And as I type this out, I am listening to DODDODO.

Enlighten me here. I've always seen Immortal and KRS One as the few excelent beacons on that scene. As well as Flight of the Concords and of course Mike Shinoda. Shit with a Japanese family name that can rap.

Hip Hop from Japan's not too bad. Because it's not similar to the stuff from the US. Or at least most of it.

And Kick the Can Crew > Nujabes > Rip Slyme > All.
And DODDODO is good.

And Fettes Brot from Germany is better than just about anything from the US.
The rest of the hip-hop from Germany ...not so much.

I just like electronic music, honestly. And the rapping over sounds annoys me.
And so would much rather listen to breakcore.

Tbh, if I were to make a hierarchy of my music taste, rap would probably be the lowest on that list.

I don't know what you don't like about Rip Slyme. But they have a nice jazzy sound they put out there in their music. Which I like much better than a good majority of hip-hop I've had the unfortunate experience of listening to in my lifetime.

Eh, why should I both myself searching through a genre to find artists I like less instead of searching through a genre I already like, like Death Metal. I'll be lucky to listen to all the artists on metal-archives in my life if I try.:x In my opinion that's of a much higher priority that discovering all the underground or other "acceptable" hip-hop artists.

God I've barely scratched the surface of Screamo.

Cradle, Taninaka, Nomak, and about 1000 other japanese artists all do "jazzy sound" better than Rip Slyme. I don't know why you bother with hip-hop if you like other genres so much better, though.

Hardly a Paradigm shift. Rap in it's beginning in the nineties was mostly more centered around birching over society and such, and then came Eminem with his emo attention-craving and then came the superficial and depth less Money-Bitches-Cars rapping where everyone childishly brag of how cool they are.
50 cent? What the fuck? He even got a game made to honour his awesome mighty coolness. Tasteless I say, tasteless.

Actually, Activision was first going to publish it but after Blizzard acquired Activision they ordered it halt as they don't want any-thing to do with that shit so they had to search for a new publisher.

I haven't heard of him, but last year I started exploring for more underground hip hop/ rap artists. There's a lot of good stuff out there that they won't play on pop radio. I guess it's fine, but sometimes I don't want to hook up my ipod just to listen to my music and no some other heavily censored song.

Well, I don't see why the masterminds behind WoW would really care...
But it's nice to see that even they have their limits, I started doubting them after hearing SCII would be split into three games...

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE IS GARBAGE. THIS IS THE EXACT REASON I WANT TO EXPLODE.

just because its a little bit better than most mainstream garbage, doesn't make it good. learn yourself. yeah paradigm shift!? okay no. realizing that "some rap/hiphop isn't bad" may be new to you, but you're about 20 years behind.

honestly, are you all really seriously with this shit. kick the can crew...is that a joke? Rip slyme...jazzy>?!?! you cant generalize japanese hiphop and you can't generalize american hiphop. stick to your rock and metal, don't come in telling me that anything is better than nujabes...cause you're wrong.

next thing you're going to tell me is that drunken tiger is better than tribe. holy shit I'm angry.

I just rage at ignorance and ignorance was here in this thread. Obviously that is just my opinion on IT, and obviously other people can think otherwise. I have no problem with people liking any artist at all, since as long as you enjoy what you listen to...then its usually all good.

But a paradigm shift in rap in 2008 and then mentioning Immortal Technique. That is ignorance and also that is why its garbage.

Hear hear.

I just can't stand rap in general. It's just some repetitive and skill less background noise with talking. And they're pretty much all talking about the same uninteresting topic, all claiming they're so undeniably cool and badass, claiming they're all fighting with other gangs and whatnot like some children in a sandbox, and my mom got scared, and said youre moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-air. I begged and pleaded with her the other day, but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way.
She gave me a kissin and she gave me my ticket, I put my walkman on and said I might aswell kick it. First class, yo this is bad, drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass. Is this what the people of bel-air livin like, Hmm this might be alright!
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the Licensplate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror, If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air!
