Hey guys, I'm in my 20's and my family is moving to Tokyo japan, now I've always wanted to move here, so It just so happens to turn that I can work from home, and it yeah I'm moving to japan in a year.

I've really only spoken English, bit of japanese in school but yeah never listened in school so won't remember shit.

I'm from Sydney, Australia and yeah if someone has similar experience moving to a foreign country without knowing the language could give some advice, or more specifically Tokyo that' be bloody fantastic.

Perverts on the trains.
Vending machine selling panties.
Sex toy shops.
Everything expensive as hell.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

I think there's at least 20 videos on YouTube about this subject.

As for advice, I'd suggest learning as much Japanese as you can.

Yeah being able to speak Japanese is almost a requirement if you are to live there. I can't imagine living in a foreign country for any amount of time being unable to speak the language.

what a funny thread
NEETs (No Employment Education Training) are the least desirable people anybody would want to hire and yet they are the first choice to become moderators/admins around the internet. They have yet to have established a sense of responsibility or role in society and many are plain leeches (with minor exceptions). They are given "authority" to police sections of the internet with the powers of The Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Isn't that weird?

Really? A lot of you guys are saying racism... I saw a video about an African American girl living in Japan. She said that some people just stare from amazement - she never experienced any racism.

Guess you'll find out how it is once you go there. Best of luck, buddy.

I believe there is also a ninja restaurant.

Also a top ramen museum. And if you go to Japan the thing you have to do first, absolutely first is find a sakura tree on a hill overlooking a city, that's number one.

Heard there was a gundam revolutionary war currently on going in Japan. Although being an foreigner gives you +100 ability to pilot any mech. Too bad you aren't an exchange student which gives +200 ability to pilot any mech +100 to an instant harem.

Its easy to google about life in Tokyo as many people upload videos or post in blogs
You may use Stumbleupon's service to stumble for Japan or Tokyo life.

Living cost of Tokyo is about 10-13% more expensive than Sydney's
People may be passive if you don't speak Japanese. Also they have senpai-kouhai manners at work/school.
Crowds, better mass transit, lots of places to hang around, more convenient lifestyles, but smaller living space ($ dependent)

Friend of mine has lived in Japan for around 2 years ago~, sheis a caucasion and has never had a problem, if anything they said that people are too polite and she often has to deal with people being too friendly (not in the pervy sense, although that is someone you'll have to deal with if your unlucky).

There's a factor which may constitute discrimination against the dark skinned people as 'some' SE Asians and South Americans may overstay after their working permit expire, and can cause crime.

Spent week in Italia and learned a quite a lot XD Once you get there and you are surrounded by people who speak only that language it comes to you :) I too might be on a plane for Japan on April 7th and I have extremely limited knowledge, only thing is I get whole year for learning the language and then 4 years of university :D Yeah scholarship xD

Just don't worry, start learning language (start of with Hiragana and Katakana, study some theory than start with kanji, of course do it the same way children in Japan do it (you have on the internet list of kanji children learn through grades))

And I trust in your abilities, but be aware "basic classes" usually describes something like a jlpt 5 course, while a basic functional level (and I mean basic) once you're there is maybe around jlpt 3 level. Notice the disparity, and they're both labeled "basic".
