According to Iza News, the Chinese government will acquire the airing rights of Japanese anime and open a website exclusively used for streaming the anime programs. The Chinese Copyrights Protection Center will play the major role in the negotiations with the Japanese producers and in the management of the licenses. The Chinese government intends to eliminate the widespread piracy by obtaining the licenses on its own. If the system runs successfully, China will establish similar systems with the US and South Korea.

Sounds very nice. More money to the anime producers and less pirating (won't stop it, that's a given). Two birds with one stone. I must say we'll expect bigger and bigger budgets regarding anime :D

oh china. you silly goose you. piracy can never be eliminated, only reduced. it is however, nice to see them care about protecting other people's license as opposed to outright stealing them. like the gundam that never appeared in their country.....

I thinks it's more like "fewer Chinese Bootlegs will be produced. For domestic release or otherwise." My assumption, at least.

I don't know how deep is your knowledge on the current situation on China regarding censorship in the entertainment business, but I can tell you that the amount of romantic and action-oriented content in recent Chinese movies (from the Mainland, Taiwanese, from Hong Kong or Macao do not count) has been growing. Dementia and homossexual behaviour (though not envolving sex) is somewhat tolerated. So I believe most anime won't be censored a lot...but of course I am sure political scenes regarding revolution and popular discontent towards kings and governments will be cut, so I don't think most seinen anime will be aired on China, and some josei won't too. But shounen and shoujo, I think, will be perfectly fine.

I can see the Pretty Cure franchise being licensed in China.

Shounen is a given, Shoujo is a maybe as well some shoujo-ai.

Just no seinen, Josei, harem/ecchi, and hentai

Well, as long as their censorship won't affect the anime that gets aired in Japan, I'm happy. Looks like a nice deal for both the Japanese and Chinese. Always nice to see these two old enemies get along.

Yeah maybe in China but the world haha yeah right look at all the streaming (legal) sites we already have. They haven't stop piracy in one bit they only managed to make some groups not to fansub if it's "simulcast"

This is going to end up like Crunchyroll getting rip off everyday......waste of time.

Seems like this would be a good thing, no? As others have said, it certainly won't stop piracy, but at least now we'll be seeing more legal releases of anime in China (not actually sure what the situation has been up to this point...), which ultimately means more money for the animation companies. So, no complaints here.

I just hope the japanese anime companies could make some dough from giving linenses of anime shows for the chinese government , but piracy will not end for sure, it could be just an excuse to obtain free licences.
If china wanted to eliminate piracy they should start with themselves.

To be honest, it never fully come to mind that chinese people could be anime/manga fans too, but why the chinese goverment making it a fuss about it, isn't the chinese government still controlling all the information what the chinese people read, write, and watch?

Lol, hypocrisy is fun. But no, good job taking the initiative to do something about it.

I'm just wondering what it'll really mean for us, if anything at all, like if it'll affect anything if this system's implemented in other countries. Probably nothing, though, so I'm not gonna worry now...

Good job, China.

Nooooooooooooooooo
Even though truthfully i doubt it will be successful.
It's so big and it has so many people and (no offence) but they are pretty much the king of piracy.

I watch most of my shows in english fansubs but most chinese fansubs>english fansubs.
If it EVER becomes successful , it will also affect other entertainment like manga translation which will really affect the manga fandom.
For those of you that read english translated light novel , the effect will be even greater.

Also - fansub does not = piracy.

Oooh, I saw some Katekyou Hitman Reborn! when I visited mainland China a couple years ago. The violence was not censored at all. I also saw The Cat's Eye in China in the early 2000s, which was also quite good, even though I only saw one episode. Left a deep impression on a young me.

It is both sad and hilarious to see so many stereotypes popping up on this thread, though I certainly won't deny that China has a deep-seated piracy problem. I wholeheartedly support the Chinese government's efforts. We don't know if the anime will be censored, though I know for sure that any anime that strongly criticizes the Harmonious Society will not be licensed.

Good for China. Good for Japan too.

I don't see how this will stop English fansubs in any way. All I can see now is that they will dub the Japanese anime sell it in China and more money will flow to the producers creating bigger budgets and possibly more anime aired per season. I'm definitely sure fansub will never really die out. The bigger companies can ask them to take it out once it's licensed but even then there's always 100 other torrents and direct downloads to get your hand on it. Now if the damn streamers would actually have good translations without censoring the curse words or "Americanize" it and have HQ I would maybe consider paying for it. Either way, it's good to see that China is interested in more than just buying Japanese technology but also their culture. More money is always a good stuff.
