Sorry if my post is too long, but cats like posting big chunks of text. :)
You see, it's so difficult taking time off the computer because we've become so dependent on it, regardless of whether we're working or playing. When I was in high school, I used to spend hours on the computer, but nowadays I don't get much time anymore because I'm preoccupied with university. So there's your secret - you have to have other things of your interest that should keep you preoccupied. Honestly, you end up crawling back to your computer sometime later anyway, but at least it works for a period of time!
If you need to spend more time away from the computer, the first thing you need to do is have a semi-active social life. You don't have to party out or hang out like crazy, but occasionally go to the movies, shopping malls or eat out with your friends. Once you have a close group of friends you can trust, you'll be automatically spending a decent amount of time outside. Oh, and don't forget your family!
For me, if I didn't have any friends who were free, and I was tired of the computer, I would take long walks along the park or other areas of the town including shops and beaches. Unless you're afraid of sunlight or moonlight, exploration is really a lot of fun - you get some exercise AND discover areas you've never seen before.
If you like reading books and like writing at the same time, then that's a good way of passing time. But of course, make sure you have a book that suits you ( library says hello!) , or else you'll be bored and you'll be sneaking back at the computer anyway. As for writing, just take a piece of paper and start on anything - poetry, short story, your personal diary - and you'll be hooked once you go with the flow. Don't forget comic books/manga either!
If you're really feeling like it, you could always do some housework and tidy that mess up in your room. Organise your school folders, give your furniture pretty positions, tidy your clothes, and cook ( or learn cooking) - there's always many things to do in the house!
If you're feeling philosophical, you could always lie back ( doesn't matter where - it can be a park bench or your bed), and reflect on your life. Think about all the mistakes you made, and what you can do better next time. Think about all the happy things you have in life and the happy moments, and the things that you miss, think about your future dreams - and about anything! But you have to wash out all negative thoughts to make your thinking worthwhile.
The other thing you need to do is have a hobby that you can dedicate yourself to - one you can improve and learn from, not just something small and trivial that you won't continue for a long time. If you don't have a specific hobby, you could always learn to do something that's new to you - like learning to play instruments, languages, etc.
I used to do and still do all kinds of stuff, but not because I want to escape from the computer, but because I want to. This includes things like - staying homeless for a day with a friend just for the heck it, prank calling, relaxing and listening to music, photography, film making, playing with cats, watch boring television programs, attempt to learn a musical instrument but fail miserably, sing randomly, make my own language, write random letters to friends, draw, learn useless magic tricks, write miserable haikus, and so on and so forth. The list is endless, there's always things to do.
In the end, you have to ask yourself how much time on the computer is too much. If it's affecting your life, then you'll have to use some of these alternatives to keep you busy. If it doesn't affect you life, do them anyway because being on the computer for too long isn't healthy anyway. ( But no one cares). Ultimately, a balance between your activities is the key. :) |
