According to Mainichi, Kyoto Police High-Tech Crime Office arrested a 14 year old boy for copyright infringement. He had reportedly been uploading scanned manga of "One Piece", "Naruto", "Gintama" and "Major" to Youtube before the official release date. The boy has already confessed to the crime.

Numbers of file sharing service users have been caught for uploading anime, but it's for the first time in Japan that a Youtube user is arrested for illegal streaming. The boy had been informing other users of the locations of the videos via Twitter.

Updated on June 15th
According to Sports Hochi, the boy is under suspicion of streaming 118 chapters of total 30 titles. Kyoto Police estimated the amount of damage to be two billion yen ($21 million). He had obtained the manga magazines 4 ~ 9 days before the release date and his videos were viewed more than 8 million times. He has been remaining silent about how he acquired the magazines and what motivated him to commit the crime. His blog has been owned by other 14 and 15 year old boys and the police is also questioning the two suspecting complicity.

According to Iza News, the boy has deposed that the purpose of the scan streaming was to earn money via the affiliate advertisements in his blog. The police said he has received more than 100,000 yen ($1090). He purchased a PC by the income from the blog.

Just saw this on ANN about 15 minutes ago.

Strange how he got the manga before it was even released, guess that's the first thing the police are gonna investigate.

Yeah, it's not like there are different departments within the police force for different purposes or anything...

Why don't they go hunt down the real pirates instead of picking on a 14-year old boy?! it's not like he was selling them for profit

They have their priorities mixed up big time

This. The "lost sales" are from bootleg copies, not shared copies.

But if he was releasing them early wouldn't it make sense to find out HOW he was doing this, and the easiest way to do that is to arrest him and get him to tell where he was obtaining it from, and therefore close some holes in the company.

you probably have never bought a single manga or dvd in your life. hahaha

i think the real question is where was he getting his sources.

second thing is, him using youtube was indicative of how clueless or naive he was.

if they make an example out of him, which they probably will, it will have been unfortunate. i think they should just scare him for a bit and then send him on his way.

Honestly, I feel bad for this dude. I mean come on, he's 14. And besides, the funny thing about these people calling him an idiot and laughing at him, is that you're even worse: You're on your computer watching/reading anime/manga for FREE. Yet, when you hear some other person got caught for doing something that supplies you ungrateful wisecracks you just laugh and point as if it's something that only idiots would do. THAT is what is pathetic. Yeah, go ahead point and laugh till your sources of anime and manga finally shrivel up and die off, till there's nothing else to do but buy it yourself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending this kid. He's done something wrong and is in trouble for doing it for whatever reasons. But the response I've read to it is just pitiful and disgusting.

wow, he was doing something so obviously illegal which means that either..
1. no one took the initiative to warn him (people were probably encouraging him to do it anyway)
2. he was just plain naive

but i dont know what's the big deal about viewing the scans before the released date.
waiting for a few more days would kill you? o.0

LOL I have a huge doubt about this story

I find it hard to believe that a 14 yr old kid could get his hands on those manga without the publishers knowing :)) (I thinks it's a conspiracy)

I dont think it is leaked from way up but from the staff that manages the completed versions of the mangas when they are still in the digitized form before print.

I blame the gun laws. They are way too strict and not enough people are dying from them.

I also always *facepalm* whenever I see mangas uploaded to youtube. IT. MAKES. NO. SENSE.

MANGAS ARE MEANT FOR READING, NOT WATCHING.

Why are people sympathising with someone who has broken the law? They are in place for a reason and if broken, no matter how old the person breaking it is, they should be punished accordingly.

Also, like everyone, lol at the idiot uploading manga to youtube.

Teaching children to share comes before giving them legal advice and teaching about copyright infringement laws.
