How would you feel if a happy romcom ended in sudden tragedy? Take for instance My Dress Up Darling. Gojo and Marin confess their love and the next day Gojo is hit by a bus and dies, which then leaves Marin a complete emotional wreck. The End.

That would feel like an iconic "in your face" moment to me.
No, this isn't my signature.

That'd become a thinly-veiled horror for me at that point, and probably leave me with PTSD. Wouldn't matter if it's something like School Days because that ending was kind of telegraphed from somewhere in the middle, but then again School Days is by no means a "happy romcom".

Tragedies are some of the best endings, no? It could work, but only if there's enough build-up to make an ending like that make sense. Otherwise it'd be very random (and possibly hilarious.)

I'd get annoyed. But I'd get equally annoyed when a depressing drama ends in a sudden happy ending.

It would take a lot of work to sell me on that development. Subtle foreshadowing, how the aftermath is handled, how the themes resonate.

There should be a point, the tragedy should be worth something other than shocking me and making me cry.

Not a romcom, but I liked Your Lie in April better before it started to become a tragedy...

I feel that with good execution it could be really impactful and pretty nice. Still if it was a trainwreck of an ending I would be impressed by the courage to pull it off, even if badly.

There is that Robert Pattinson movie where the ending is literally 9/11.

I would feel sad, tricked and backstabbed.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

If Chitoge Kirisaki from Nisekoi had been run over and killed, I'll wouldn't complain.

The "Haganai" Anime adaptation didn't exactly have a happy ending, even if the source material was still on-going. Just they never continued it... It was all fucking laughs and giggles with adolescent perverted humor till near the end of the 2nd season... I was actually very disappointed how they concluded things for the Anime... and I highly doubt this shit is suddenly going to come back with something like a reboot either. This is the type of trashy Ecchi romcom that is basically seen by me as a product of it's time. It would be no different if suddenly some shit like "Ben-To" got a reboot for basically no reason at all. lol

@JaniSIr Damn, that must hit hard. A few weeks ago I just re-lived that nightmare ( for some obscure reason, not like the TV didn't stuff it down my throat at the time!) on History Channel.
As for Anime', don't we have Clannad After Story?

@Sheol01 Music? You remembered that? :O The only thing I can recall from that movie is how abruptly it ends.

anime is too predictable, wild and totally unexpected endings are a good thing, so I'd be like hell yeah

give me just one of these shows where a comet strikes earth or nuclear war starts at the moment the lead characters propose marriage to each other

take THAT, normies

I feel like how comedy becomes tragedy.

One should appreciate well written comedy and tragedy.

That would be a lousy way to end a series because that's bad storytelling. Instead, it should be the beginning of the second half of the series or the end of episode 1, where the real story is about how the surviving persons deals with the death of their loved one.

There's already a series from 2007 with an After Story where one of them dies, and it was certainly a shock. Still, kudos to them for exploring the aftermath of such a tragic event. I can also think of a certain 2012-2013 slice-of-life series about a group of high school friends having fun until a bus tragedy unexpectedly happens. It was an emotional gut punch. I wish more anime creators were brave and skillful enough to tackle such tragedy.

Most romcoms end in tragedy for me because mc chooses worst girl, Take for example True Tears, that shocked me so hard I cried, the title was right, the true tears were the tears of the audience.
