I've made a similar thread in the past, but since them I've watched Otaku no Video, which has a particular scene that lives rent-free in my mind.
Otaku no Videos deal with our protagonist, which feels alienated from his college peers due to him taking his tennis club very seriously, while everyone else doesn't. He's then reunited with his old friend, who now walks with a couple of odd fellows, who are otaku.

The scene in question is when in a sort of matsuri and finds his friend there cosplaying, and then he's surrounded by a lot of people cosplaying Gundam, Matsumoto Leiji's characters and etc, all the whole they ask him to read their doujinshi about lolis, seifuku and girls with dicks (Good to know that nothing changed in four decades). At that moment, our protagonist feels like he's surrounded by aliens, a different species: It isn't just his friend that's weird anymore, it isn't just his friends that coincidentally have a similar form of autism, but rather that all of that IS A THING, it has lots of people, and it's everyone, they're living among us.
They're aliens not just because they're weird, but because they offer a different form of living that goes against all the societal expectations they were taught since their infancy.

I always come back to this screencap:

The creator of that famous video codec? One of us.
People in their field just have to accept that someone who uses pictures of cute girl in anime style and talks about youkai are a thing.
Like, I've always been curious: Using the photo of a cute little girls is probably the thing that stereo-typically goes against ideals of patriarchal masculinity the most, how do normies cope with the fact that something that goes against everything they've been told all their lives simply exists and is a thing?

Like, it reminds me on how queer people on Tumblr and Twitter who posted about how they thought "the straights are so BORING" were unknowingly talking about normies, because their first contact with non-normies was with autistic queer people where they learned about fandoms and talking about movies and stuff.

Are otaku perceived as aliens?

....Probably more the case back in the day, however, obsessing over pop culture isn't abnormal today. Otaku being overly invested in fetish content, also doesn't really make them stand out either. A ton of people have weird stuff they are into, however, of course that will be contained to the bedroom. The only thing alien, is that they felt comfortable enough to express that in public, which sure...if you are arguing some "otaku" have no social grace, sure, that doesn't mean they are alien, or that should be expected either.

Honestly, guys using cute anime avatars, aren't much different than soldiers painting bombshell Blond pin ups on their bombers, during WW2, to me. It's a normal human interaction, to want to look at things you find appealing. The only difference between 50s pinups and anime girls is the ideal.

The way "otaku no video" uses the term otaku, they would also be considered otaku.
Though, yes, in this thread I'm focusing on a specific type of otaku.

@thewiru otaku no video uses the term in the way it was originally intended to be used (nerds disconnected from mainstream culture who are really into an specific subculture and have habits surrounding them like cataloging stuff)

I don't think it really goes that far. In Japan otaku are viewed by most people fairly neutrally from what I have read. Some are viewed as weird by some but not so much alien just outcast. I do not think it is different in the West particularly just the views are more negative and especially extreme from social media influence on the collective consciousness.

Since I'm too lazy at the moment to post that aliens meme, I will just type it out.

They aren't alien. They’ve just been culturally isekai’d, stranded in a society that doesn’t appreciate the majesty of 2d waifu or mid-season plot twists. The rest of the world is busy with IT jobs networking, but otaku here analyzing why the villain’s eye twitch means unresolved childhood trauma from Episode 6.

So no, wiru, the otaku are not extraterrestrials. They’re exiled dreamers with torrent accounts and hearts too tender for 3d dimension. And if that’s alienation? Beam me up, kohai

Not that different from other people who want to escape reality...
That's more like LARP-ing the fictional idea of aliens. not being alien.

Yeah. Football Fans wearing the Jersey of their favorite Team are also aliens.
Deep thinking.
Good point.

This question is invalid because aliens don't actually exist. That much is very obvious, indeed.

@DesuMaiden You are so wrong. I could go into it, but we have had Senate hearings & such with insiders and Whistleblowers for the last two years saying yes. Well, they use Non Human Intelligence these days, but you get the idea. Short hand: Roswell was REAL. USA recovered Alien craft WITH ET bodies, more crashes followed because the Military found the trick (for a short time) to knocking out their guidance system & causing crashes. A legacy program has existed in my country to back engineer this stuff (with a bit of limited success). The public & even the Congress & Presidents have been lied too here. It's still ongoing.
Ok enough of that.
