The studio making it is going bankrupt and they're selling off all the assets.

They've been working on this for years. Do you think it'll still release?

@giantpudding oh well, doesn't change the fact that it's not anime, wasn't an anime studio and doesn't belong on a site for anime.

My least favorite FF game, so I wouldn't have watched it anyway.
I'm sorry for all those guys though. I hate that word, bankrupt. Years of work thrown away are (almost) always sad news.

So I asked grok
"Final Fantasy IX in collaboration with Square Enix. Announced in June 2021, the project, tentatively titled Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy, was aimed at children aged 8–13 and intended to appeal to both fans of the game and new audiences."

It was going to be an abomination if kids were the target demographic. The esrb rating of ff9 is Teen. This was definitely not going for a faithful adaptation either. This is not not considered an anime on mal either for not being asian animated. Knowing Squenix, they were likely going to make it more woke propaganda pulling some clown stuff like making the black mages non binary.

I didn't even know that was a thing. If it's in that state then it's most likely getting cancelled, too bad.

I hate it too, because it's a pain to play. I'd have watched an adaptation in the hopes it might be better without gameplay. The story surely can't be as bad, or else they'd have never announced an adaptation.

I honestly forgot about this i just now remembered "oh yeah they did announce an anime for ff9 huh"
welp it's sad, but with video games animes we usually get subpar adaptations, even tho we got a lot of good ones recently, i doubt the story of ff9 would've worked well in an anime, it would've been only fun for diehard fans

While Square Enix's decision to let a French animation studio handle their biggest IP may seem peculiar.. Especially when there's a large domestic animation sector right on their doorstep.. You have to keep in mind that they have a long track record of working with Japanese animation studios and practically every one of their outputs has either been a commercial failure, a critical failure, or both..

@this_shit_again Oh, indeed. Personally, I honestly envision a Final Fantasy IX anime as something akin to The Last Unicorn or like a big budget 1980s styled animated show. There's very high expectations, and I don't blame this falling through.

@billybub There's a French comic (well, manga pmuch) I've been reading called Radiant.

Total shonen slop. It slaps. 100% manga if you ignore the fact the writer is French.

Shit can be anime without being anime you feel me. Just gotta get the vibes right.

Idk jack about the FF thing tho just drunkposting.

It could be a perfect fit for an anime, but let the japanese do it please.

I'm sorry for the folks who lost their jobs, though.

@billybub anime are still technically cartoons, anime is a term from anime fans that is used in the west to shorten an "animation from japan". Anime is a medium not subgenre of animation.

@giantpudding Nah, they just don't have the Japanese sensibility that is needed for a FFIX anime. Nothing against the French or anyone else.

Never watched Unlimited though, is it that bad?

@giantpudding I haven't finished it, but I thought FFU was a pretty cool adventure/monster of the week anime for the first half that I've seen.

@MaiNeville Yeah, it is, under the "cancelled" variety. I'm sure there are concept story boards and character art in one of the employee's storage units/closets. I would love to see them.

I think Unlimited suffered from the same problems as Spirits Within suffered: Earth based setting, loose interpretations of series staples, and while with a high budget, didn't go "full Final Fantasy" enough. The art and character design are cool, as well as Wonderland's concepts, but its story content and execution.... If you liked it, more power to you though.

@HokutoMumyoZan Even if it came from less-than-ideal circumstances, I think people would've still wanted to see it anyways.
But, now that it is lost media, that probably makes it even more valuable than it was once considered to be.

I took a quick look at the Lost Media Wiki to see if it was featured there, but to no avail.
It's just a feeling I got, but I'm 100% sure that the community over there knows about it already.
