Anime really started becoming more mainstream in only the past few years and many popular and many high profile series hail from the late 2000s. Is older anime from the 80s, 90s, and earlier 2000s a massive turn off for newer anime fans? Do people see older series as just too old?

They'll get there eventually.
Its called the novelty effect. Everything you watch seems good at first when it's novel to you. Everything is fresh. Every anime is different.
So yes older might be a turnoff at first(I was there sometime as well) but they'll be able to judge better after watching 50-100 shows from variety of genres.

So, it is like the wine... the older the better,
But if you wanna just get drunk here you go...
What are the benefits of old anime series?
First of all you will understand Exel Saga
Second - you will understand FLCL
And Third - you will understand why in Japan otaku take two canisters of gasoline, and burn anime-studio to the ground...
That is the benefits of watching old anime series...

No i love older Anime, think the oldest one I have watched is from the 1968.
If I would have a problem with older once would be the comedy, etc City Hunter, Cat Eye.

I really a big fan of rose of versailles and I'm really hyped for the movie Mappa is going to work on.

And the late 80 up to early 2000 would have my favorite animation style.
Even if a lot of older OVA's etc have insane gore, the Animation itself is beautiful.

But as we have this army of Shonen tard coming and going I don't think that many new Anime watcher is going to experince it.

> Do most avoid watching older anime?

The structure of this question is kinda curious, as in this case it is similar to asking "Do most people avoid traveling to New Zealand?" or "Do most people avoid eating meat painted in gold?".
Like those examples, it's not like they avoid it, but rather that they either don't think about it or don't have the opportunity most of the time.

If even I myself commented that one of my major issues on watching older anime was because I almost didn't know any and had no way of discovering them of the time... then imagine how it must be for people that are more casual than I am.

@ssvmdh I live in Sweden, Anime is here is more or less looked down at, I would say most people think it's either porn or just a cartoon that would be shown on Cartoon Network. But at least on the internet like Twitter and especielly Facebook it's always about the big 3, One Punch Man vs DragonBall.
I can lay in my bead for hours and just scroll through on my phone and it's just people fighting about what shonen is best and who's the strongest.

I would say, that damn it would be great, if people picked up a Anime like Candy Candy and spread it on the Internet.
And it feels like I'm literally alone in watching project from world masterpiece theater. I don't think I have seen anyone here on Mal talking about it.
It's just a very few internet friends that have actuallyed watch them and talked about them.

In internet there are many torrent places that have oldys anime series, but thay are in hard sub, but it is ok, you will find subs via googl...
Here we are - I think at this forum we have some 10-15 otaku who have watched old anime and can talk about it...

I don't think it even occurs to most people that old anime exist and, you know, can be watched. The thought never crosses their minds.

As for myself, I mostly watch seasonals or 2010s/2020s anime. Older stuff tends to require more effort and determination on my part, as they often feel rough and dated to me.

Not saying they're worse, just different and harder for me to get into. I don't feel good about this, but it's just how I am.

I started watching anime in 2015, but most of the anime I watched during that time were 2000's series and I didn't start watching seasonals until mid-2018. I think that old anime can be a turn-off, because anime from each era are different in a lot of ways, but most new fans at some point will try to watch older anime, because if you focus on an era too much, you will run out of content fast.

I don't get the mentality of people who don't even have an exploratory look at the decades of stuff which has come before (for anime or any other medium). It would be really weird if all the best stuff had been made in the past few years.

I think there are very good series in almost every era, but I think it's undeniable that for example a random season from the 10's is much better than one from the 80's or 90's.

@Zakatsuki_ I think nowdays it is all about money, and becourse oldys like you and me mostly sleep hard on cementryes
producers decides to do big money on new users.
So they put us in situation when they show us Akira or NGE and say how it changed the world of animation in common
and Japaneese animation in total, like critics says - Akira is a game changer BUT AKIRA is 1988th anime-movie today is 2025
it was 40ty years ago and stil new anime cant beat it on big screen\

While I watched many old anime before, if I were a new anime watcher today I would check out recently popular ones first.

No way I would straight up watching something like LoGH or Dragon Ball or Naruto etc as my 1st anime if I just started out today for example, those oldies could wait.

Most older anime is just not promoted to the extent that new anime is (understandably), so why would somebody with anything approaching a casual interest in the subject want to dig into something not that readily available? Also, a lot of people take part in interests in order to fit in with various social circles, and as with most things, there's more people engaging in discussion/hobby-sharing with contemporary media than that of the past.

I think the barrier is accessibility rather than people actively avoiding it because it's old. Older anime are unlikely to be on the mainstream streaming platforms and newer or casual watchers probably don't realize they exist.

I personally am interested in watching more older anime, but I get intimidated with the number of episodes since they tend to be longer than new anime. I even get intimidated with new anime that already have so many seasons and episodes. The length and inaccessibility from the usual streaming platforms made it harder for me to start watching older anime since there need an extra push, but it's not that I'm turned off because they're old.

Depends on the series mainly.
Like you have the staple "watched as a kid series" like Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, etc. which people have probably heard of and as a result eventually consume some media related to them.
You also have the goto "must watch" shows like Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion that people see referenced a ton until they eventually just watch them.
For anything outside of those categories maybe there's a genre that appeals to a person like if somebody is super into mecha anime they might go into say the Gundam franchise.

Otherwise availability and ease of access just make it more tedious to find older shows especially taking into account some series that are say only available on non-official sites due to fansubs. Especially when dozens of shows are available every season through various streaming services any barrier to awareness or availability immediate alienates casual viewers.

Older anime is still good.

It's just very different aesthetically. So when you grow watching anime from the 2010s, older anime just feels so unfamiliar.

But eventually every anime fan will end up watching some old classics if they're curious enough. They'll get there soon enough.

I don't avoid older anime and never did.

I had friends that avoided them, mostly because of the artstyle [I never get that argument] or just having no polish subtitles [which is fair, everyday I'm happy, that I'm good at english XD]

I imagine some do, but I also believe alot either just don't know the older series exist, or just don't have an interest to find it (but, not like, actively avoiding it).
Finally, they just might not be able to find it with decent Subs/Dubs, if at all. Newer stuff is just plain easier to find.

Yes, and no. I'll take myself as an example - I just find it easier to watch modern shows. But then again, there are times when I crave for good ol' cel visuals. It's just that watching the very old shows requires that extra incentive or gut feeling which I wouldn't necessarily need to, say, watch a 2016 show or something.

If there is some pre 2000's and after 2000's of a series, I am picking the after 2000's version .
90's and before tv anime colors don't work so well. 4:3 is small. Audio is not good too. Availability is lower for older shows too.
