What is the ideal anime that has some spooks and scares but is not straight up horror that you would advise for a friendly Halloween gathering with friends and family ? Something like Gegege no Kitaro if you know ?

Have you watched Another? It's practically a mix of The Ring and Final Destination with all its pros and cons, so it could be a great anime for a friendly Halloween party.

@tchitchouan I think that this anime is analogous to the 00s horror films that you watched with friends in the evening with snacks and beer, but did not take completely seriously.

The one that I can think of is probably Mob Psycho 100.

In fact, this show, like the Ring I mentioned, is considered a J-Horror classic, but the various adaptations change things too much, such as killing off or leaving one of the important characters alive. So, to some extent, you can watch both the film and the anime as different versions of the same story.

@RobertBobert Yup, i'm pretty much sold on it already. I do like the ring and especially Sadako.

D.Gray-Man is a show I would describe as Halloween ”core”.

Non-horror? Maybe "Hanada Shounen-shi".
It's about kid who can see ghosts. Ghosts come to him to grand their last wishes. I think ghosts fit Halloween theme.
But other than that it's a slice of life with some comedy and its art reminds me Ghibli works.

Dream Eater Merry (Yumekui Merry)

I feel like it fits perfectly for a Halloween watch.

GeGeGe no Kitaro and Digimon Ghost game are still horror, even though they're family friendly. Akuma-kun as well.
If you want something that doesn't try to be scary, I recommend Don Dracula.

Spirited Away - that one's Ghibli and for the whole family while still incorporating a lot of supernatural elements and some strange entities which can be creepy. But since we get to know them like persons they don't stick around as nightmare fuel.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu - even more straight forward with this. We're in hell, we meet all kinds of demonic beings. But they are acting very humanized and it's comedy. It's a seinen and I don't really know how appropriate this is for children, so I'd trust the site rating of 13+. And if you want more, there's more: several seasons and OVA sets.

Oh and also All Saints Street - this is like a collection of short sketches of several within an episode like Seiki K, but they form a continuous plot. It's funny and has some action and heart-warming moments too. It's also 13+

I think someone may have already mentioned it, but Little Witch Academia is a fun, relatively short school-type anime with supernatural elements
It's mainly a light, slice-of-life anime that takes place in school but it has a good underlying plot

@RobertBobert Another is the reason I'm scared if umbrellas with metal tips.

Non horror Halloween setting immediately brings Soul Eater to mind.
